Hello guys, i wanted to know (again) if a 60GB SSD is enough for the following (i really need someone to clarify this for me:
i. I will only be installing Windows 7 Home Premium which i think is only around 20GB, more or less
ii. essential apps e.g. java, Microsoft Office, dvd burner software, antivirus, you get the idea. I am pretty sure that will all be a maximum of 5-7GB.
iii. Combat Arms, which is a game, and roughly takes up around 4GB
That is a total of more or less 31GB, which would only take up a bit more than half of the drive capacity. I will also be unlikely to download movies, songs and other media. However, i will probably make Youtube videos of the game (Combat Arms) via fraps, which i know will take a fair amount of space. But i will likely delete the videos right after i upload them onto Youtube.
I am also quite aware of constant updates of these programs, which
will make 'em larger. However this is to an extent.
In the end, i am asking for your advice, guys. And all will be appreciated.
The Valk

Valk,
No offense but I think Glenn gave you a pretty good series of answers already and personally, I really think you're barking up the wrong tree.
First, you've not taken into account Windows 7's need for a cache area and, in general, it will not take long to go through 60GB of space.
Second, you make a lot of statements such as "more or less" and "unlikely to download movies etc" and "likely delete videos right after I upload". In your previous question, you say "I may install a few games (maybe just battlefield 3) but that is all".
Valk, here's the deal - with a 60GB SSD, you have no room for "more or less" or "likely". You will have to be a damn sight more disciplined in your loading of games and capturing video than "more or less" or "maybe" or "a few".
Here's why:
The harder you push a 60GB SSD for space, the slower it will run - this is a fundamental nature of all drives, not just SSDs. It will run slower because Windows has to spend more time trying to find empty space to save files. So the vaunted speed you're looking for is going to go out the window because Windows will have to work harder finding space to store your games, videos, files etc.
No 60GB drive is going to give you top speed right up to the 60GB usage mark. You might as well buy a Ferrari and lock it to first-gear.
Look, if you want to use a 60GB SSD, go ahead. We have already said it is
not a good idea because 60GB won't last long. If you can be extremely
disciplined and keep your usage in check, you might - might - be able to make a go of it. But I've not met anyone yet who has not run out of space using a such a small capacity drive.
Sorry, Valk, but you've already asked for our advice - and we've given it to you. I'm not sure what more you want.
In the end, it's your choice.
Just please don't come back to us in six months and say "my 60GB SSD is running out of space and...".
Cheers, Darren.
Okay, you've made your point clear, and i appreciate it. I now realise why a 120GB would be worth saving up for.
Also, i am wondering if a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB be the same or similar in performance as a Western Digital Caviar Black.
Thanks,
Valk
