I wish to upgrade my motherboard, cpu,ram, sound card and possibly graphics card. I only use it to surf the net,word processing,email,working on photos in Gimp,designing logos in Pageplus and hopefully getting a web site together. Budget around $500.00 Thank you, Jon.

Hi Jon.

Captain Cook's axe, is it?

Hullo Paul, Sounds bad, it's had a few break downs lately. I just thought it needed a new heart transplant. Jon.

Hi Jon.

My point was, why not treat yourself to a new PC and pass the old one onto someone who can use it.

That $500 budget will buy you a fairly decent PC for what you've described.

Hullo Paul, I suppose I could do that, but I was looking for the excitement of doing the upgrade myself. Jon.

You can still build it yourself Jon.

Hey Guys,

I recently went computer shopping and I came across a shop having a sale on computers. (This is going back about 3 weeks now)

This might sound like rubbish, but its true. I paid $40 for a computer with the following: Dual Core 3.00 Ghz CPU, 1 GB Ram, 80 GB HDD DVD/RW player/burner, and Windows XP Service pack 3.

All I did was install Windows 7 Ultimate and install a TP-Link PCIE Card.

I have not had a single issue, even though the desktop is an ex-government one.

For a $500 price tag, you can either build yourself like Paul suggested, or you can pay a little more for a store bought PC/Laptop. Personally, I would build myself if your on a budget.

As for the computer you have right now, perhaps you could look into a small home network also?

Brendon.

I suppose the question I should have asked is what motherboard would you recommend that would last me for a another long period. Thank you, Jon.

I'd suggest a:

* Intel Core i3 2100 processor ($140)

* 4GB of DDR3-1333 RAM ($30)

* Budget MSI, Gigabyte or ASUS H61-chipset motherboard ($80)

* 500GB HDD $(80)

* Basic 500-watt PSU/case ($60)

* new DVD drive ($20)

* Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 ($99) - 32bit if you have old peripherals (printers, scanners etc) you want to run, 64-bit if you're buying new hardware.

Prices are approximate and to get that Win7 price, you must by the Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) version - comes with no box, just disc in sleeve. You MUST buy the disc at the same time as you buy the other hardware to qualify for the price.

But that should be around $500 or so, give or take $50 either way.

Cheers, Darren.
