Recording Internet Radio

My system uses a motherboard with a Realtek sound chip on board (ie. no soundcard) and I've been trying unsuccessfully to record sound from an internet radio website using "MP3 My MP3". I next tried using "Free Sound Recorder".

In both cases the resulting MP3 file contained nothing but silence.

Am I doing something wrong or isn't this possible with my hardware?

Thanks.

Hi. There shouldn't be any problem doing that.

Can you please give us an example or two of the sites so we can try recording them?

Hi Paul

I've been trying to record from

http://tunein.com/tuner/?StationId=87278&

Incidentally, the instructions for "Free Sound Recorder" state:

"1. Launch Free Sound Recorder. Click "Show mixer window" button to choose sound source from the "Recording Mixer" dropdown list. There are many kinds of sound source, including Stereo Mix, Phone Line, Aux Volume, Video Volume, Mic Volume, Line In, CD Audio and so on. Then, select proper recording device from "Recording Device" dropdown menu. Adjust the volume and balance."

However, in my case, the drop down list for "Recording Mixer" contains "Master Volume" as the only choice, ie. none of Stereo Mix, Phone Line, etc.

To me, this seems toimply that the technique used by the software won't work with my hardware. Not so?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

P.S. Under the "Recording" tab of "Sound", there are 3 choices: "Microphone" (not plugged in), "Line In" (not plugged in), "Realtek Digital Input" (default device).

Is this how it should be?

Hi.
Is your Operating system Vista or Windows 7. If so, then the ability to record streaming audio from a web radio station may be disabled/hidden.

I had a similar issue when upgrading from XP to Win7. The "Input Source" for XP was the "Stereo Mixer" and it allowed streaming audio to be recorded. For reasons unknown, this is hidden in Windows 7.

Here is a link to the Easy Recorder FAQ describing what needs to be done to re-enable it.

As a workaround for my laptops integrated sound card, I used an audio cable to loop the speaker output to the line-out and was able to record streaming audio (after adjusting levels by trial and error).
