What can we do with old CD's?
Tuesday, 19 February, 2008
Help. I'm drowning in useless CD's. Not just coasters from bad burns, but the ones that seem to drop out of cornflakes packets.
It seems a shame to throw them away. But what can I do with them?

Well, what you don't do is what I heard a well know Popular Science broadcaster say on the radio recently - put them in the Microwave and watch the fireworks! ( DON'T)
Some people suspend them from fruit trees on a bit of fishing line. They spin and are claimed to scare away birds. Perhaps you could hand them near the fridge to scare away hungry ten year old boys.
I'd be surprised if a couple of readers don't write in with ideas, but a good place to start would be with a search such as these ones on Google and Sensis.
Or check out this useful site. Paul Zucker

(We'll leave that to you Bob. -PZ) BazzPosted: 09/03/2009 re: What can we do with old CD's? Wait till you have hundreds of them. Then point them all so that light from the sun reflects onto one spot, preferably a can painted black. Put food or water or anything you want heated up into the can and wait half an hour. If you is e enough mirrors (cds) your solar cooker will be more efective and greener than your oven. It will only work at a part of the day though... PriyeshaPosted: 05/03/2009 re: What can we do with old CD's? heat a needle or a nail and make holes in the CDS , paint them with acrylic colors and string them to make window decors or just paint them and make wall art!!!..
you can do a lot with them..
i just did this on one off my walls and it looks great!!! Hayley DeakinPosted: 20/11/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? I found that the 'glue flies to the CDs to make little hovering surfaces' worked well. A brilliant twist to this came in the fact that I used wasps, which are much maligned in my native UK, so I managed to find a use for the little blighters as well!
I glued 10 to a CD around the edges and set them flying so that they hover at various points around my living room. Whenever I like I can put drinks or tea lights on them. Shame Shame Shame
(A Grey Patrol is on its way to your house Luke. They're going to all set their hearing aids to STUN WHISTLE and aim them at your windows. I'm still waiting for my first hearing aid. Can't be long now. WHEEEEEEEEEE! -PZ :-) EddiePosted: 22/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? If you're going to stick flies and bees and swarms of locusts onto old CD's I suggest you first check your local Federal Aviation regulations, there can be some stiff penalties for violating airspace and flying unairworthy craft, you dont want guys in black suits and sunglasses pounding down your door at 6:00AM do you?
(They won't come if you take the number off your house. I think I heard that in my head once. Must make new foil hat. -PZ) bert loretoPosted: 21/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? With a jigsaw, I cut 4-6 slots each about half way from the outside towards the centre on each CD. Then assemble them by clipping one CD's slot into another's. Build things...kids love them...bit like leggo or mechanno.
If all fails then RECYCLE bin them! its only plastic and an insignificant amount of metal.
Beware the gigabytes of 1's and 0's of data dont contaminate the soil as that would be totally irresponsible...hehehehe
cheers Bert
(And don't forget to reformast them first. All those 1's weigh something and slow down the garbage truck. -PZ) Richard Posted: 21/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? You cant expect to get that kind of lift and thrust with ordinary houseflies, they just have the wrong attitude. Only Mexican racing flies have the will and stamina to get a project like this off the ground. They work together well as a team but be sure to select equal numbers of left-handed and right-handed flies or the flight may experience some turbulence.
As for CD clocks, I bought one from a weekend market stall back in the 90's for about $3 (battery included)
Seemed like a good idea at the time but I think I paid about $2.50 too much.
(That's all very well for you to say Richard, but most of us don't speak Spanish, let alone Aztec. And AQIS won't let them into Australia since the great racing fly scandal opf 1998. -PZ) DanielPosted: 21/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? I use old cd as plate mats or drink mats. it's quick and easy! then i don't need to buy plate mats any more Anthony ZicPosted: 20/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? Oatley Electronics (www.oatleyelectronics.com) have clock movements for sale. You get a few of them for $20.You can label your old cd's and then attach the movements to them. I'm not certain that these movements are suitable but they look OK.You may want to ask them before purchase.
See ya ShamusPosted: 20/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? Carry them in your pocket wherever you go. A fireman in the US had a DVD in his pocket, stopped a bullit and saved his life Frank WoerlePosted: 20/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? try hanging one on a rod and reel to attract some fish while your beer sits on the other while the good one plays music, and if the motor dont start you still have a signal mirror, thats fishing in Darwin. MikePPosted: 20/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? Re what to do with old CD■s.
I found ■Some Guys■ idea (03/07/2006) interesting but had a few problems. 8 flies were not enough. I needed 11 to be effective but 8 bees worked fine. (Are the flies bigger in Aus?) The other thing was you had to align the flies or bees in the same direction otherwise the flight was too erratic.
As it was, the CD nosedived from about 3m and just about decapitated the cat which gave me the idea of a self powered ■Throwing Star■ or shuriken. I am pondering the possible outcomes before I try this. Has anyone else attempted something like that?
Ivan Posted: 20/02/2008 re: What can we do with old CD's? I still think the clock idea I posted in 2004 is a great idea.

(Yeah, but that's so 2004 Ivan. -PZ :-)

Some GuyPosted: 03/07/2006 re: What can we do with old CD's? i found this at http://www.hintsandthings.co.uk/musichall/CDroms.htm
Self Powered UFO`s- Capture 4 to 8 flies then place several dabs of glue on an old CD, carefully with tweezers, place the flies on the glue, once you have enough flies launch it (by throwing it) and it will magically continue to fly around for up to an hour, my record was 52 minutes, can anyone beat that?

AlexPosted: 20/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? I was surprised when I found out that there are recycling channels for unwanted CD and used Battery in some Asian countries (where at the same time, these places do not have recycling channels for tin can and plastic bottles), but not in Australia! I hope organisations or government would do something about it! :) rohbagsPosted: 17/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? I used to turn them into lamps, wait till you have abuot 50 or so, and glue them all together so the hole in the middle lines up with them all, then either slap together some high brightness LEDs or a small fluro tube and fit them down the hole in the middle - put a base on it and a cover to stop the light leaking out the top and bottom - and watch the light break down into its many spectra of light as it shines through the CD (from inside to outside) - very cool light effects on the walls!
But after making 3 of them - i got bored - now i have lots of places to put down my coffee cup(s)! (and about 100 other spare "coffee cup placemats" in the cuboard).
cosette Posted: 16/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? Suspend old cd's with wire or string and hang them in those nuisance places that Mynah birds and Sparrows frequent to annoy the heck out of you. Works a treat and no more listening to them scratching on your air conditioner. MarkoPosted: 15/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? Become an artist and use them in all sorts artworks.
Ask your friends if they need some of the cds.
also i agree with Jason a rubbish bin is a good place. Alana GlewisPosted: 15/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? Why not try to get away from CD's as much as possible. I find a compact stylish USB external hard drive much more functional. Tom TravoltaPosted: 15/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? Glue them together so there is a silver side on both sides then hang them from the ceiling with string and hit them with a blast of air and a bright light. As they spin they should deflect the light like a mirror ball in a disco. MichaelPosted: 15/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? Store them in the garage with everyting else.....you just never know FrictionPosted: 15/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? Personally, I think there should be a recycling depot for old CD's and DVD's. JasonPosted: 15/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? Glue a heap together and you have some cheap billy cart wheels with a nice sized axle hole...
Snap them into shards and go 'mozaic' on an ugly tabletop...
Make a CD wall display - without wasting real CD's. Track down lable templates of your fave albums, glue on your defunct CD's and frame...
a piece of rope through the holes makes a novelty necklace for parties...
Also, I hear the rubbish bin is a good place... NathanPosted: 14/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? you could hang them from string and watch the reflections from the sun it looks pretty cool Daniel WalkerPosted: 14/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? They make good frisbees
(What we call coasters, I've heard Americans call Frisbees. -PZ) IvanPosted: 14/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? I used to make clocks out of olod 78 & 45 Records for my friends, so why not buy yourself a heap of clock mechanisms, make yourself some CD clocks and sell them at your local markets. Place them on a plate stand and you've got a good talking point.
Ivan DavidPosted: 14/12/2004 re: What can we do with old CD's? You could put them on a wall to create a feature. Or you could use them to put your mugs on.
