What is the plural of asterix?

Thursday, 31 May, 2007

What is the plural of asterix? I think it should just be the same word as it already sounds plural. I ask because I want to tell people in a sign to replace the asterix with there phone number.

Chug Potter, , SA

You probably don't mean Asterix the Gaul.

But if you did, I imagine that would be Asterixes (because the general rule where you want to make a plural of a word that ends in an S sound is to add an ES as in Boxes.)

There is no such word as asteriks

I think you mean the

*
character which is called an asterisk, and the plural there is asterisks. Look carefully at the name - it's pronounced ASS-TER-ISK..

Darn... I always thought it was kinda like a covy of quail, a pride of lions or a gaggle of geese... I figured that's what ASTEROID meant.

(Sit on it Peter. -PZ :-)

re: What is the plural of asterix?
There is no mystery with this --

We are dealing a Greek plural form.

Just as the plural of aviatrix is aviatrices, and matrices is the plural of matrix, the plural of asterix is asterices (Greek origin).

Please put your speculations aside.

re: What is the plural of asterix?
It's true that the * character is called an asterisk (plural asterisks) but if you had two of those little Gallic cartoon characters they would be asterices.

re: What is the plural of asterix?
While you're being pedantic about an *, it should be their phone number, not there phone number.

re: What is the plural of asterix?
"Their" phone number, not "There" phone number. Tut tut.

re: What is the plural of asterix?
If this is the SYMBOL * you are referring to then it is called an Asterisk and the plural is Asterisks.

re: What is the plural of asterix?
The correct spelling is asterisk and the commonly used plural form is asterisks.

re: What is the plural of asterix?
The word should be asterisk (*) - plural asterisks (***).

"Replace the asterisk* with your phone number."
