If you use Intel embedded graphic card and wants to be able to play games that insist on using the AGP Texture Acceleration (crashed, hangs without it like Warcraft III), try to see if it could use opengl method (using parameter or a configuration switch), if it can't then ur screwed.lol..
There is a very drastic solution that might work though (tested by me on my GM965 based laptop), use Vista and the most current driver for ur intel graphic

I got this probblem too. I right click on my computer then click manage->device manager->Display adapters and disable other display device (for my case, it is BB capture driver) and restart. Now both direct draw and AGP texture acceleration are enabled and the buttons are not gray.

* The game or application reports AGP is off or disabled.
* Microsoft DirectX* Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag.exe) shows AGP Texture Acceleration is "Not Available" on the "Display" tab.

Cause:

If the graphics driver reports all of the video memory is local, the DirectX AGP Texture Acceleration setting shows "Not Available". If some or all of the video memory reported is non-local, the AGP Texture Acceleration setting shows "Available."

Older Intel graphics drivers (Production Versions 13.x) report all of the video memory as non-local video memory (AGP memory). Therefore, the AGP Texture Acceleration setting shows "Available."

Newer Intel■ graphics drivers (Production Versions 14.x) do not report non-local video memory. Instead all of the video memory is reported as local video memory. It is normal and expected behavior that the AGP Texture Acceleration setting shows "Not Available" on computers using newer Intel graphics drivers because non-local video memory is not being reported by the driver.

Note: With the Intel graphics drivers (Production Versions 15.x) on the Windows Vista* operating system, AGP Texture Acceleration shows as "Available." While the Intel graphics driver still reports only local memory, Windows Vista controls the memory management and interprets the Intel graphics aperture as non-local memory. To further clarify, the graphics aperture is a contiguous virtual memory space where the Intel graphics driver initiates access to the graphics memory.

Solution:

Having the AGP Texture Acceleration setting as "Not Available" is a normal and expected behavior for the Intel graphics drivers (Production Versions 14.x). This setting does not need to be made available, enabled, or activated and does not affect the performance of games or 3D applications.

If you have a game or application checking for AGP or AGP Texture Acceleration, it is looking for non-local memory. In general, local video memory is usually faster than non-local. Therefore, Intel recommends contacting the game or application vendor if they have a setting or update that allows the game or application to check for local video memory first.

when i run DxDiag in Windows XP i see AGP is Disabled but

when i run it in Windows 7 i see that it is enabled but small change in my Graphic Adapter Saize in XP i Get 384 MB but in windows 7 i get 354 - 358 MB.

Guys there is no way to get it enabled. my system has the same problem and the problem is solved when i install an agp card in my computer. and mohit max payne can run without agp card. ill giv you a hint. install the game on another high graphic computer. copy the whole folder of max payne in your system knowing the condition that u should have 2 ghz processor, 64 mb vga built in (texture acceleration not required) 512 mb ram of any sort enough hard disk space and you r good to go. if this doesnt help plz send me an email. sonu_sannan89@hotmail.com

In addition to everything said below: recent versions of Intel integrated graphics drivers will show AGP Texture Acceleration as not available - this is expected behaviour. Because all memory for these devices is the same - there is no disparity between memory seen as local to the video device and 'AGP' addressable memory, recent drivers just lump the whole lot together as 'local' memory. Because of the shared memory architecture, this provides _identical_ performance to using AGP functions but simplifies memory management.

What this means is: you may have some joy with getting games (like Max Payne) that specifically check for AGP Texture Acceleration to run by installing older drivers from the 13.xx.xx series - if you've recently updated you'll be using 14.xx.xx series drivers.

At the end of the day, though, your integrated graphics chip is probably not up to running recent games in a satisfactory manner, and an upgrade is probably the best answer. Might be a worth a go, though, if you're desparate to try it.

AGP Acceleration 'greyed out'?
Use Everest Home Edition (it's a System Information 'utility'...free for personal use).
In it, look for PCI/AGP.
Click on it,should reveal 'what' your AGP card is.
Look right the List (under AGP).....IF AGP Texture Acceleration is 'ticked'.....then, your graphics-card DOES support it.
(IF 'un-ticked'...it certainly DOES NOT 'support' it !!)
There is a 'link' provided...to 'upgrade' drivers...use it.
Solution ?
If 'unticked', then, it is time you got another Graphics-card, for sure !
And, stop acceptting the customary idea....."Oh,I only want a computer that works !"
Yours is not working, because of that very stubborn 'principle'!
Why?
Because you have not taken the time........to learn all about your computer (you just want it to 'work').
You always want 'someone else' to 'fix' it ...for you (no brains involved..for you)
Computers don't work that 'way'......they definitely 'need' your 'involvement'........from the moment you switch one "On"....till you switch it "Off".
Every Game/Program has a "Systen Requirement" List attached......READ IT !
If your computer is NOT 'up to scratch', then, do everything you can.......to make it so !
And, DO NOT USE 'garbage components'....truly garbage components that OTHER people have thrown away ("That's WHY they threw them away, in the first place !")
If you have an 'old style' computer....IT will NEVER work as fast/smooth as the latest ones out do......it is an OLD computer, won't be anything more than that,period !

(It's not necessary unless you want to run certain software such as some games. It seems that you don't have a separate graphics card. If games are importantm you'll have to install a separate graphics card. Ask for advice at a nearby PC shop. -PZ)

A small suggestion for those that are trying to find out why their game does not work......READ THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS OF THE GAME. If you have an ATI 9250 and it requires a 9600...it won't work. If it requires an NVIDIA 7600 and you have a 7200...it won't work. Intel only supply on-board graphics...you are on your on own. (Why don't you ask Intel or Dell if AGP Texture Acceleration is supported?)

If your system is supported, check your drivers, that is what the DirectX diagnostics is telling you!! Start with the chipset drivers (Intel call them INF drivers). Find a suitable set of graphics drivers...the originals may be too old, the latest may be too young (for your old hardware).

Your system may be total cr*p and you may need a reformat and installation of suitable drivers (as suggested).

Opps, sorry if I disrupted the flow of questions, please continue, they're great. :P

I just bought Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II for my computer. I have Windows XP and its says that my computer meets all of the minimum requirements for the game except Dispaly Driver and Device which are labled with UKNOWN COMPATIBILITY. When i try to load the game, i get a error that says "Make sure you do not have Hardware accelerateor disabled in the Display Control Panel." I made sure it wasnt but the AGP Texture Acceleration wasnt even available. Im thinking thats the problem. HOW DO IT GET IT!?!?!

How I fixed my problem

I just fixed my greyed out agp texture acceleration problem using Terry's instructions, but I need to add something to what he originally wrote: if you're installing a driver for the nForce2 chipset, make sure you're getting a GART driver in the patch. None of the latest ones had it (I'm not sure about the unified drivers though). Once I finally figured that out, I used the original driver CD that came with the motherboard. After installing the gfx driver, my problem was solved. Thanks Terry for your help!

I used to have the same problem. I updated the AGP drivers (AGP 2.0) for the motherboard from it is website and it worked perfectly from then on.

(A brand new PC can be incapable of playing current games Dave. It's not the fault of either PC or games manufacturer- just a fact of life. Did you specify game playing when you bought the PC? If everything else on the PC is adequate you may only need to add a suitable graphics card. I'd take it to the local PC repair shop for advice and a quote. just recently my comp did this. i tried to reinstall directx about nine times still nothing.. thought it was my drivers... so i updated those.. and still did not work. im running a geforce 7900 gt (less than 2 years old) with 2gs of memory on my winxp desktop. i play cod2 religiously, and was installing WoW when this whole thing happen'd. but tonight...after 2 days of not functioning and punchin myself in the head....i come home from work and suddenly my AGP texture acceleration works.. i don't understand it. im afraid to play cod again and it will stop working.

Guys I fixed mine a wierd way. I found it online. Open windows netmeeting and then find Remote Desktop Sharing. Turn remote desktop sharing On, then off again. Then see if your agp and Direct Draw work. It worked for me for some reason. No clue why, Dell doesnt know either. But just try

i just got the new game call of duty 2! But however after installing it, i found out that i needed AGP Texture Acceleration because it says not available in the directx9.0c diagnostic tool in the display tab...
can sum1 plzzz help me!!!!!!!!

AGP Texture Acceleration (Bless or Curse)

Y have the following system: AMD Duron~900 MHz, 256 Mb Ram (1*128 Mb DDR333 V-Data, 1*128 Mb DDR400 Elixir) Syntax SV400 Motherboard, Nvidia GeForce 2 MX400 64 Mb, Win XP Pro.
The same problem like the others BUT y was able to run Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament 2003, Gun Metal at low setings~10-15 fps.
Y dont have the original motherboard drivers and y am useing VIA Hyperion Pro v5.10a

onadrianstime i have the same problem with desperate housewives..did you resolve it yet? Im using a laptop and not sure if I should try the above instructions or not. please let me know if you got the game working.

I am trying to install my game (Star Wars Empire At War) but It wont let me. I went to help and it said I have no 3D hardware. So I went for more advanced help it grayed out AGP Texture Acceleration. What could I do to make this not be grayed out?

i'm facing same problem also. I just upgrade my graphic card to ATI 9550 extreme 256MB DDR2. Before i format my computer, the AGP Texture Acceleration is enable, but after i format ( because of error loading operating system ), the AGP Texture Acceleration become " not available " ! HELP!

odd i'm having this problem too. i just did a fresh reinstall on my computer. installed motherboard chipset drivers first, then video card drivers second... and for some reason agp texture acceleration is not availible.

i'm thinking maybe the most recent motherboard drivers are bad for me... my computer was just fine until i reinstalled and used the new drivers. going to try my old ones, could be they forgot to even package the agp miniport driver.

I have the same problem here. I tried what you suggested, but to no avail. I even reinstalled Windows because of this.
Sys specs:
xp 3200+@ asus a7n8x-x, 1g ddr400
ati x800xt aiw, audigy
Symptoms:
- vpu recover sets in, preferably at startup (gpu deadlocked,reset) and windows crashes shortly afterwards
-next time it would work, but with no agp acceleration
-performance is thus degraded

what i did:
-installing, reinstalling of drivers and one fresh install of windows
-cleaning the card's contacts

Intergrated video cards will not work with BF2-Ghost Recon3-Unreal Tornament 2007- these are very high end specification video cards and the latest AGP can run the games.Anything under 5900xt AGP is a waste of time after AGP its all SLI and SLI MOTHERBOARDS Video Cards then a new PC is in order if u go SLI. bEST OF LUCK AND PLEASE read the lowest requirement on the games boxes or google -Game name game pc specs-- before you buy, usually there is no money back once you open the game packet !

I'm quite surprised at the number of queries still being lodged about this. The above instructions, if followed, should correct the problem. Unavailability of the feature generally indicates that there is a device driver problem. The problem relates to the installation of the AGP miniport, rather than to the installation of the display card itself. Either the motherboard chipset drivers haven't been installed, rendering the AGP port incapable of performing its full range of functions, or the display card drivers have been installed first, and driver corruption has occurred when the chipset drivers were later loaded.

I'm assuming, of course, that people haven't fiddled about in BIOS setup, disabling AGP related features. Reset BIOS to defaults if this is a possibility, before trying to correct the problem in software by reloading device drivers.

Motherboard chipset drivers get loaded first. Display drivers get loaded afterwards. Reverse the order and you can potentially create problems. If the system corruption isn't corrected by reloading device drivers then perhaps it is time to format and start over, with a frsh installation of Windows and the device drivers installed in the correct order?

Eric and Shields, your problems are a different consideration. You are trying to run modern 3D games on graphics circuitry which is inadequate for the task. Your integrated Intel graphics does not provide the hardware 3D features which COD2 requires, and you'll need to add a suitably capable add-in 3D graphics card to your system in order to play the game you mention.

Got hte same problem with an integrated Intel 915GMS chipset.

Cannot run Call of Duty 2 because of an unrecoverable error.

Dx of DirectX9.0c is ok except for the greyed out "Texture Acceleration"

How on earth can I access this option ?

I installed hte latest drivers from Intel. Nothing works..

Please help..!!

Some cards do not support hardware accelleration, in particular, the voodoo3 AGP series did not support agp texture accelleration, this is a limitation of the cards design since voodoo's were a glide/mini-oGL card and not really directx
