WHEEEE. (Why is my monitor squealing?)

Monday, 14 January, 2008

My CRT monitor makes a high pitched squeal and it’s very annoying. Do you think it’s dying or is there something I can do about it?

(If you can come round to my place you might be able to fix it for me?)

It’s quite possible that your monitor is on its last legs. I wouldn’t be too hasty about replacing it yet though. Instead I’d suggest you check the refresh rate it's set to use, to see if it’s too high for your monitor.

Whilst a noisy monitor such as you describe can possibly be suffering from faulty or ‘blown’ components, it can just as easily be suffering from a simple problem such as an unshielded electrical appliance nearby (speakers, perhaps) or from user applied settings which are more than it can handle comfortably.

Check Display Properties, Settings, Advanced, Monitor. There’ll be an entry there for ‘Refresh rate’ and you should ensure that it’s not set too high. If your PC has been used for 3D games at any time it’s quite likely that someone has altered the refresh rate setting. Higher refresh rate settings give less ‘flicker’, of course, and 3D gamers like to set it as high as they can.

Trouble is, amongst the specifications for just about any CRT monitor you’ll find two sets of figures for Refresh Rate. One is the manufacturer’s ‘recommended’ settings and the other is the rated ‘maximum’ setting. Although many people assume that running components at ‘maximum’ settings is okay, the reality is that manufacturer ‘recommended’ settings is where the appliance runs comfortably, and the rated ‘maximum’ setting marks the point beyond which it’s likely to fail.

Pushing your monitor to its limits like that can make it screech and squeal a bit, so you should check this first before you go heading for the repair shop with it.

Love 'Dilbert',PZ.
Maybe we ought to employ him....to answer enquiries from the idiots who write in saying nothing more than "I have a 'problem' with my computer,Help !"
Hahahahaaa !

I wish my monitor talked to me. What fun we would have

I'm sure the question in brackets in the original post is "tongue in cheek", but I do like the Dilbert. He always has the means of calling a spade a bloody shovel.
Considering the date of the original post, hopefully the problem has long been solved. However, for anybody with similar CRT monitor issues, there must be a few boats around that need anchors. Then get a flat screen ■ much better resolution and they're reasonably priced now.

re: WHEEEE. (Why is my monitor squealing?)
I have a GeForce 8600GT PCIe graphics card and an hp pavilion mx704 C.R.T. monitor. When I set my resolution to 1280x1024 the only refresh rate you can use is 60 hertz (naturally), and my monitor goes WHEE WHEE WHEE all through my home. any idea what's wrong?

(Just because you can set the card to a certain resolution and refresh rate doesn't mean that the monitor can handle it. It may just be that that's what that monitor does at that setting. Perhaps you're due for an LCD screen - which won't squeal. But why do you say "naturally"? I can't see why that would be? -PZ)

re: WHEEEE. (Why is my monitor squealing?)
For some strage reason,my refresh rate was up to 85 hertz.

After jackking it down to 60 HTz the screem of death stopped.

Thanks to those whose advice was helpfull.

first time here BTW via yahoo search.

(Glad we could help Kev. -PZ)

The hammer trick did it for me... thanks guys :D

re: WHEEEE. (Why is my monitor squealing?)
My monitor was squealing and the easiest fix here was to check the refresh rate. It was stated it it was to high the monitor would squeal. Well my monitor was set to it's lowest refresh rate 60hz. So I put it up to 70hz and it stopped.
Thanks for the tip.

dont go anywhere near a c.r.t.with a hammer after all its a vacuum tube and the glass can be very thick. its foolhardy to print such a letter

re: WHEEEE. (Why is my monitor squealing?)
a high pitched sound coming from a crt can be a horizontal fault {and most proably is check all electro caps in this section, or can be L.O.T be careful good luck tom

re: WHEEEE. (Why is my monitor squealing?)
A tool i find most suitable for this problem is a hammer. Hold hammer in right hand, left if you are left handed and strike monitor in the centre. You may wish to practise your aim on a chopping board. If noise still persist deliver another blow. If noise still persist you may need to deliver several blows in a row, pause slightly in between each blow and asses the situation as you dont want to exert any more effort then you have too. Pleasure to be of assistance.

re: WHEEEE. (Why is my monitor squealing?)
hi Bob. if your monitor is making a squeal type sound when it's running, it usually means the high voltage rectifiers and voltage triplers are on the way out. this becomes even more of a concern if you leave your computer running and leave the house with the monitor running (countless house fires are caused by this, usually with fatal consequences). i would recycle it and buy a new lcd monitor. as i've said many times, the cathode ray tube (CRT) display has served us well for over 60 years but it is dated technology. the amount of CRT monitors i see by the side of the road now is indicative of their lack of popularity nowadays. they're also space wasters too and just plain big. buy a LCD. they are the way to play. cheers Andy. :) :)
