How can I open an EXE file on a Mac?
Saturday, 05 October, 2002
I use a Macintosh. It says
The document "NAV80TRY.EXE" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found.
This is the exact message for this error, but i have had other errors of the same nature in the past trying to open pictures.

I'm no Macintosh expert, but it sounds as if you're trying to open a PC application file which can only be opened by a PC or a Mac running PC emulation software.
EXE is short for executable.
However, if you believe that the file should be a graphic, there's a possibility that it can be opened by the application that created it. For instance, you can use one of the ZIP file packing programs to create a self-extracting archive with an exe extension, such as gardenpics.exe. However, this file can usually also be opened by the ZIP program that created it. So, try to find the program that created the file and see if it can open it. Paul Zucker

Move the .exe file to your desktop if it did not download to there.
Open Terminal. Click on Finder on the Dock, then navigate to Applications > Utilities > Terminal. Or use Shift-Command-U to go directly to the Utilities folder.
A small window should open. Verify you're at the computer's root. If the person who logged in has the computer nickname Jeff, "root" in the terminal should look like this...
~ jeff$
Type cd Desktop and press the Return key. The terminal should now look like this...
~ /desktop jeff$
Type unzip filename.exe and press Return. Replace "filename" with the name of your downloaded .exe file. Terminal will quickly inflate the file(s).
Quit Terminal when the process has completed.
The file or folder is now sitting on your desktop. Open the file with your preferred application.
This process will work for any of SiteSell's or Site Build It!'s .exe files. hfPosted: 26/03/2010 re: How can I open an EXE file on a Mac? Use 'Wine' (download from http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/, mount, then you may only install Wine) - it emulates Windows-like surroundings. Its advantage is that unlike other emulators you do not have to have a Windows copy in the first place. (I had the problem when trying to download a Windows image for ParallelsDesktop but Microsoft only provided a downloader in form of an .exe-file.) then change the file ending to .zip and unpack it with StuffIt Expander.

this will convert your .exe file into a folder revealing the contents.

Just so you guys know...I used PC's for business now for over twenty years, for graphic design and more recently photography and video. My kick a** PC, which is loaded, worked like an old grandma on the video files, it was virtually impossible, to render in a time that would be anywhere close to reasonable. On the large hi-res photo files it kinda moved along like a slug. My new macpro absolutely destroys the PC in every function possible. I am living proof that they are absolutely non-comparable. The PC can't even come close to challenging the Mac, and oh how sweet it is, to not have the machine lock-up, freeze, crash, etc. To anyone that is working on high end production and graphical jobs or gaming, I say before you blab PC heroism, try both side by side and you too will soon find your PC as a large bookend and dust collector.

As in windows we have .exe we have .dmg & .app in Mac. As per as my thinking there is no alternate of Mac OsX. Now as i think so for opening EXE file we need to go for following steps:
1.To use EXE files on a Mac you need a Windows emulator or your need to re-compile the raw C++ code into Mac format.
2. Make your Intel Based Imac as bootcamp machine and enjoy it....

to open a EXE file on a macintosh, u would need the program virtual pc, whereby u can use windows in a mac. u need to install virtual pc and then yr choice of win OS, then u can run the window inside a mac. birdseedPosted: 12/07/2004 re: How can I open an EXE file on a Mac? The file you are attempting to open is indeed a Windows executable file. On Macs, such a file has the suffix .app (although normally the suffix is hidden). The file you are trying you is not bitmap anything as the idiot above has mentioned, it is NAV80TRY.EXE, which (I'll take a punt at ) stands for Norton Anti Virus tryout version 8.0.
As mentioned above, using an app such as Bochs (slow, unstable, bug ridden) or Virtual PC (less slow, unstable and bug ridden - what else would you expect from MS?).
However, I think the best option is to download the tryout version of NAV for the Mac. It is, afterall, the OS you are using and not Winblows.
Here's a hint for the future, avoid apps with an exe suffix, and choose Mac when presented with a list of OS options when downloading things. AnomPosted: 11/03/2004 re: How can I open an EXE file on a Mac? sounds like a self displaying bitmap image that are created with some graphics programes.
The file containes a small amount of executable code and the image.
Many graphics viewers such as ACDsee are able to view these files with out executing them.
You can also try opening a copy of the file in a text editor and stripping the first few lines and the last 20 lines of text from the file then save it as a BMP file. Then try opening it in ACDsee or Lview Pro. David StillPosted: 21/08/2003 re: How can I open an EXE file on a Mac? What was given was half a solution, so here is the other (rather important) half:
An exe can only be opened by a PC, as stated, but simply changing the extension does nothing, because OS X (or any other Mac OS) relies on "creators" and so on. The extension is for the benefit of pc-users who may want to use the file.
To fix this, there are a number of options for you:
1. Check out bochs on www.sf.net (a free x86 emulator, unfortunately without support and only capable of running Win95 and *nix). Download and see what happens, .exe wise. You will need a working install disc for Windows, as bochs is standalone.
2. Get Virtual PC from Microsoft (be wary of the cost, and the 6.1 update).
