Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?

Wednesday, 29 December, 2004

Burnt DVD's don’t play on my Xbox. A message saying that the disk can’t be read, comes up. What can I do to play burnt DVD's on my Xbox?

Also can downloaded movies/clips be put into DVD format?

(Originally posted July 2004)

Tom Shugg, Mildura, VIC

There were two types of DVD-ROM drive included in Xboxes. If yours has a Samsung drive, it should be able to play copied DVD's just fine. I’m afraid that if your Xbox has the other brand (Thomson?) it will not, according to reports I’ve read on discussion boards. The only thing you could do about that would be to replace the drive with a model that's capable of the task.

I can give you a bit more joy with your other question, however. You should be able to record movie files of virtually any type or source in DVD format with the use of appropriate software. You’ll need an adequate DVD authoring program and a DVD burning program. You may even be able to find a DVD authoring program which performs all the tasks for you. A good place to start working out just what you’d like to do with your movie files, and what software to use for it, would be the Authoring guides at VideoHelp. You should find enough information linked there to get you well on the way to using your DVD burner more productively.

And by the way, Tom. I sure hope those downloaded movies are legitimate. If they are copyrighted movies, then you aren’t allowed to download them and put them on DVD yourself. Same goes for your other DVD's -- don't be a pirate. Piracy is bad, mmkayyy?

Cheers,

Yes, you need a universal dvd creator application that can burn any video format to DVD for palyalyback on dvd player.

But be warned that this software will probably infect your computer and steal your money.

i dont know about burned dvds cause i dont have a dvd burning device. but i know that musicburned from mp3's in wmp(windows media player) at slow speed on all cd-r, cd-rw, pure silver, double mirror cd's work on, as peter said, on second third or so on times, never first. i have found it to work more often when i go to music- cd- (play or copy open) on the xbox. good luc k hope it works. btw, if you dont have an issue opening your xbox do so, pull out the hdd(dont disconnect) and remove the jumperand but in on the cd drie where the four pin goes, and put it on the far right when facing the power button. then put the four pin back in and it will play burned games. dont work with the burned music might with the dvd's. bye

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
Just letting you all know, all you have to do is take any burnt dvd (+r or -R) and put it in your X-Box to find out. I bought my X-Box in May (I dont know if it's thompson or samsung) and it will only play -R format. Even if you dont have the DVD remote addition that is need to watch dvd's you can still test what is needed but you cant watch it.

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
xbox has different dvd drives. some wont read cd-r but should read cd-rws. its because of microsoft anti piracy crap. unless you have a modchip there aint a way to get around it. also try burning dvd-r movie without joilet. xbox doesnt like it. If your trying to play a burnt xbox game on dvd it wont work unless you have a modchip period. so go get one there easy to install.

Yes Geoff I totally agree with you and emphasize the entertaining read bit. So why isn■t it? Though I don■t agree with your suggestion that Paul should correct the bad stuff ■ let■s have it warts and all.

■But occasionally writers begin to bellow at one another and Nathan and Pete have given us a good example.■

I think that when you have a Neanderthal like Nathan attacking Ian Nicholson■s post about spelling and grammar with■
■TYPE IT STUFF THE GRAMMAR AS LONG AS YOU KNOW WHAT PEOPLE MEAN.
As you said there are plenty of other sites for that type of communication but I think my comments and Ian■s are justified here to let this person think a little before posting his childish remarks. Again entertaining and if you don■t like it just pass over it please. It■s not like we are using up a finite space. Please Geoff don■t think that I am jumping down your throat but only trying to say that this is a forum for open discussion about specific help topics and if anything I am guilty of being off topic.
Your suggestion of a search for all queries is fine but I would like to be able to either scroll down or click on the previous page past questions in the order they were posted as many times I have wanted to read again something that was posted say a week ago but it has disappeared into cyber space.
Just my two Bytes worth!

i have tested to burn video on dvd+r and my xbox won■t play them but in my PC they work fine with PowerDVD. But if i burn the same video on a dvd-r i can play them in my xbox.
with dvd+r it says "unknown" and with dvd-r it says "video".

Paul, I think you should continue to 'correct the bad stuff'. This site is a cut above the rest, an entertaining read and a very helpful resource for many (including those of us who aren't PC experts). But occasionally writers begin to bellow at one another and Nathan and Pete have given us a good example. There are plenty of other sites for that type of communication. I have valued this site generally being clear of all this.

One thing I'd like to be able to do - to see more than just 15 of the most recent contributions. Is there a way of conducting a search that returns all of the queries in date order?

Well they're my thoughts. Keep up the great work.

(Hi Geoff. All noted, and we'll see what we can do to fix these things. Always good to get feedback. -Paul Zucker)

If you still have questions regarding backups, networking, modchips, modding, evox, a great site is http://www.xboxscene.net/

And to play any media including divx a great program is called xbox media center.

And high quality brand disc is always better to use. Ive got a Xbox v1.1 w/ thompson drive and use 8x TDK DVD-R and burn at 8x with Pioneer DVR-A07XLA no promblems.

My xbox plays -r's, and +rw's just fine but only if you burn at slow speeds. If i burn 8x or more the dvd starts messing up around the 3rd or 4th chaper of the movie. All stand alone dvd players i have work fine no matter how fast i do burn at. It is my experiance that the Samsung drives suck donkey balls, at least for my laptop...

I'm having the same problem, I just bought a new DVD burner. I have a program called AVI to VCD/DVD... so i converted the avi to a dvd.. then i went to burn the dvd on to a dvd+r and it hasnt worked. I'm not sure what drive I have (Samsing or Thomson), how would I go about figuring that out? I've looked all around the case for it.

OH AND BOOKS DO SEEM LIKE MORE YOUR SPEED YOU DOPEY GIT.

I don't think I've ever seen so many spelling mistakes and such bad grammar in a single thread before!

If that's what playing with console games does for you, try reading books instead!

if you have problems getting -r dvd's to play on yer x-box (and we're talking x-b0xes with chips here, the standard x-box is good for proper region dvd's x-box games and music cd's and thats it!!!) just get a cross over cable (i got one for ten dollars for a ten metre cable)ram all yer files straight onto your x-box using an ftp program and run them off the hard drive. it takes all the wonder out of it ( i wonder if it'll play or not)plug in the cable load the ftp program transfer whatever you want and then run it ftom the x-box hard drive. i still wonder to myself why people bother burnring dvd's when the cross over cable is about the same price as a blank disk and is gauranteed to work!!!!! have a nice day!!!

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
DVD-r is the readable format for all xbox drives +r may work but not as reliably.
it also makes a hell of a lot of difference if you have an EVOX chip everything works fine all my P.C. files get put onto DVD-r and then put onto the xb0x eg all my mame roms neo geo etc.....

tooo easy!!!

MattPosted: 29/08/2004

I figured out how you can play vurned DVD's on an Xbox
You can play burned DVD's on your XBOX. But you have to have a DVD decryptor and a DVD compressor. XBOX Will only work for DVD-R's not DVD+R's, iv tried. When you put your dvd in your computer to copy; you have to decrypt it using DVD decryptor and after that is finished you have to use DVD Shrink which compresses it from 7 GB to 4 GB. Then you burn your DVD-R, put it in your XBOX and it will play the DVD. I rent DVDs from the video store and copy them instead of buying them, its way cheaper. The DVD Decryptor and the DVD Shrink are free off the internet. I can give you links to both.

DVD Decrypter:

http://www.dvddecrypter.com/

DVD Shrink :

http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

I hope this solves your problems. if you have any trouble what so ever just e-mail me and I can help you.

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
If you burn over 3gigabytes into a dvd, it becomes worse for the xbox to read it.
Thats becouse the startup fil (.xbe) is usaly plased last in folders, so they comes last into the dvd.
Try to copy a smaller game (max2g)
and burn at slowes possible speed.
DVD-r is the choise!

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
I think I inverted de Samsung and Thomson DVD reader. The Thompson seems to read all type of DVDs, but the Samsung seems to read only the DVD-.
ScottyPosted: 19/08/2004

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
I think the problem is the type of the DVD. From what I can see, the Samsung reader can accept DVD+ and DVD-, but the Thompson can only read DVD-. So, all of you who has that problem, try burnig your DVDs in - format.

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
Actually, thompson drives read DVD-R at the fastest speeds and at the greatest stability of all the xbox drives, their only downside is that they cannot read cd-rs correctly first time, but reinsertion of the disc helps, if second time doesn't work, third time lucky and so on =). the samsung drive reads most cd-rs and dvds, but at a slower speed compared to the thomspon in the dvd area

re: Why wont my Xbox play burned DVD's?
The simplist way to whatch burned dvds, if replacing your current drive viods your warrenty, is get a stand alone dvd player capable of playing them. there are many models that do so. but first you need to find out what type of burned dvd you want to watch. is a dvd-r, or dvd+r or dvd-rw or +rw is it a dvd-rom or dvd-ram. some players do both and others do them all. they cost anything from 149 and upwards (for reasonable quality ones anyway). just make sure the player you get is compatible with the disks you want to play. tho i prefer to get one that can do them all (tho these generally dont do the roms/rams or both, they may do one of these and the others i mentioned)
