How can I disable balloon tips?

Tuesday, 13 January, 2004

How do I turn off the balloon tips popping up from the system tray?

Vincent , Perth, WA

Start, Run, Regedit.exe (it's in the Windows folder) and edit the Registry as shown below. Do make sure you spell correctly and get everything exactly right; mucking up the Registry can (with enough bad luck) disable your system completely.

Navigate to the subkey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Right-click the right pane to get the New... menu option, then select DWORD value. Name it EnableBalloonTips.
Double-click this new entry, select "hexadecimal" and enter a value of 0. Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on. All Notification Area balloon tips are now disabled for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

Hi Vincent

If you don't feel confident editing the registry, download Tweak UI from Powertoys for Windows XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp). Read the page before downloading the file.

Install and open Tweak UI and select the Taskbar item in the left pane and untick the Enable ballon tips box. This program has a number of other tweaks you may find useful.
