Can I boost the mobile phone signal?
Tuesday, 14 July, 2009
We're thinking of moving to a new house, but it's tucked under a ridge and has only a very faint mobile signal (Optus). Is there anything you can get -- like an outdoor antenna or something -- to boost the gain on a handset inside the house?
I need to have access to the phone in the house because I work from home and the mobile is my work phone.
There's a very strong signal just a couple of hundred metres away.

You can buy external antennas, but they may not be suitable. They're useful in places such as metal buildings - you install them outside, up high, and run a cable down to the phone. The trouble is, they have to connect to the phone's antenna. This is often done via the car-kit connector as there isn't usually a removable antenna with a socket. In some cases you'd have to swap to a new phone to get the connectivity. Probably the best place to ask is a large car radio outlet.
This solution works by getting the antenna up high where it's much more likely to have a clear line-of-sight to the nearest base station. Unfortunately I think that what you want is a device that will rebroadcast the phone signal so that you can walk around the house with the phone. Although mobile phones could be designed that way, I don't know that there are any on the market in Australia. Here are some alternative ideas, but I think its likely that a reader will come up with a better solution.
Other carriers. Ask the neighbours of the place you're moving to, or even the existing owners. Are there any mobile phone services that do work in the house? The different carriers run different base stations, and there may be one that provides a much better signal at that spot. Not only could you change to a Telstra or Vodafone GSM phone, but also look at Telstra NextG and Three. You should be able to keep your number so there won't be a problem with your contacts. Just make sure you try it out thoroughly before changing 0 carriers may tell you what you want to hear.
Think it through. Do you really need to use your mobile phone in the house? If you'll be working there full time, consider using the home phone or a second line for business. You could even get a VoIP phone as I assume you'll be getting broadband? For a while you could put a message on your mobile (for when it's out of range) telling people what the new business number is.
Combine technologies. You could keep using your mobile phone with the external antenna, but connect it to a cordless phone so you can roam around the house. This isn't a simple job, but can be done. A good phone shop should be able to help. You could also maintain your mobile phone service, but have it forward to a fixed or VoIP number in the house when it isn't hearing the signal. This will cost extra though.
Bluetooth. If you need the freedom to walk around,, but the antenna sounds a good idea otherwise, simply use a Bluetooth headset. But do your homework and find out if the range will suit you. You should be able to get enough range to walk around a room.
Wait a while. New technologies are coming out all the time. For instance, it won't be long before someone puts out a mobile phone that becomes a fixed line phone when you're at home. One number, but two types of use.
You should also ask Optus (your carrier) and visit a couple of phone stores to see if they have some ideas.
Please let us know how you get on. Paul Zucker

(Yes, and they're also completely illegal in most countries. Especially those jammers. -PZ) SolPosted: 23/12/2008 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? I solved the problem by moving to Australia where NextG is the wonderful thing.
(Better than Mexico? -PZ) Steven LuckmanPosted: 18/12/2008 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? 1. Buy a cheap telephone system that has an analogue slot connection for a hands free phone.
2. Buy a GSM Gateway. These have the facility for an external antenna.
3. Connect the GSM unit to a spare telephone line point on the telephone system.
4. You can now use the hands free phone to make Mobile to mobile calls
5. When the mobile is rung, the hands free rings and you answer it and can walk around house as required.
6. Get a contract with two sim cards with calls between the two mobiles at very cheap rate or free.
7. Have the first mobile number divert to the second number when the first is turned off. When you leave the house, turn the GSM unit off. This will effectivly make the calls to the first mobile ( GSM ) divert to the second, hand held mobile. Ask you mobile provider to have the first mobile give the caller ID for the 2nd sim as the 1st sim number so your customers will never be any the wiser to whats going on. (If they won't, turn off sending ' A ' party number from mobile phone with second sim card. Theres a very good reason for this )
8. The sim card in the GSM unit can be programmed by placing it in the a mobile phone. A comms tech can program the telephone system to ring and call out according to your wishes. The gsm unit can be placed in a safe location where it recieves maximum signal from it external antenna and the line can be run back to the telephone system
9. All you have to do is remember to turn the GSM unit off when you go out and on when you come in.
Hope that does the trick. External antenna length on GSM is only unknown, from memory about 10M
Wesley, Glad., Qld.Posted: 18/12/2008 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? Oscar, the problem is in the fine print - they (Tel$tra) say they cover 98% of the Australian POPULATION, not 98% of the country (land mass)!!! ericPosted: 15/12/2008 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? i live in the barracks on a marine corps base, and the only way i can get any signal in the room is if i have the door open. i don't want my door open all the time because i like my privacy, so is there a way i can get better signal on my verizon cell phone.
(Go back to the supplier as there's probably a model with better signal strength or sensitivity. In the worst case you may have to swap service providers. What do the other Marines use? -PZ) TristanPosted: 02/12/2008 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? What you (and I) need is a mobile repeater. The external antenna may increase the signal by an average of 6-9dB, the signal travels down a cable to the repeater (an amp that sends and receives the signal) and this boosts the signal on average about 30-60dB. Here they cost about £300-£400. They are also illegal to set up and use because other that mobile phones, any device that broadcasts on the frequencies used by mobile phone carriers, require a licence.. And it just so happens that only the mobile phone carriers can get the said licence.
In the UK Any person found guilty of installing or using such devices without a licence would be liable on conviction to a fine of up to £5000 and/or up to 51 weeks imprisonment (Six months in Scotland and Northern Ireland).
So the best thing to do is (if you can afford one) get one and not tell anyone, especially your friends!
(They're also absolutely illegal i Australia Tristan. -PZ) CsolisPosted: 21/10/2008 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? I used a paper clip and inserted it into the back of my Samsung gsm Phone. (Get an external antenna that's designed for the phone. For example, a car antenna. Mount this outside the house, up high if possible. Talk to your phone carrier for assistance. -PZ) LyndonPosted: 10/04/2007 I Boosted it i ive in a valley and i got a piece of wire and stuck it to the top of my phone then i got full bars oscarPosted: 30/03/2007 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? i live 10klm from the town of echuca and got no signal in my house and outside up to 200meter ethere side of my house with nextG

(Not really. Are you able to find a carrier with better coverage? Or ask your existing carrier to install a new base station. -PZ) sadaPosted: 18/02/2007 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? i have the same problem. can we use that item which you are taking about it.
(You would have to ask locally. For example, the phone system might not support contact over that distance. GSM is normally set with a distance limit. -PZ) BradPosted: 20/12/2006 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? I too have had issues with indoor use of my mobile phone since I moved over to Optus from Telstra. Whether you like them or not, Telstra does seem to have the stronger signal strength overall.
The easiest way is to see if an associate has a Telstra driven mobile and see if they can get a better signal. Then switch over. Not sure if I would buy Telstra shares though - with the 3 Amigos at the helm..... DrewPosted: 20/12/2006 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? To be truly honest, NextG and Three are very expensive for if he wants to make longer calls because they're broadband-orientated and are mobile.
I pay 60c for 30secs on Three here in SA and NextG is reportedly more expensive - as an example someone makes a call via Telstra Mobile and they get charged 90c per minute!!! Robert SoftleyPosted: 19/12/2006 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? Or you could simply divert you mobile number to your house phone (asuming you have a house phone)while your at home.
(I guess the problem with this is that you have to pay for the calls. -PZ) DarcyPosted: 17/12/2006 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? You can buy mobile phone amplifiers.
(Yes, there are devices that boost the signal in both directions, but they aren't legal in Australia. -PZ) Robert C.Posted: 16/12/2006 re: Can I boost the mobile phone signal? I live on Russell Island Qld about 5 klms off the mainland. I had Vodafone, but had to go outside the house to get some type of reception. I changed to Telstra and can now sit inside and use it. Optus was tried but was hopeless as a mobile service. I have Optus satellite broadband, have tried Skype (but it doesnt work, due to lag time). Telstra seems the way to go. Good luck with it.
