Half an hour for a song

Tuesday, 23 June, 2009

"Have you ever noticed how it takes a long time to drink a thickshake through a straw? The Internet is sorta like that!"

What if you have Telstra Bigpond? My best speed with them on broadband is 27kB/sec (kilobytes not kilobits).

It takes 30 minutes to download a 3 minute song!

Andrew Burns , , Australia

30 minutes at 27 kilobytes per second is 48.6 megabytes so I guess you're talking about a wav file, not an MP3 file.

27 kBps is 216 kbps. What does Bigpond claim your speed should be Andrew? If it's 256 kbps then I guess that's about right.

Since yours takes over 30 minutes....for a 30 second song....I'd say your Contract's Internet Speed has got be around the slowest Speed of all.
A good tip, here, is..........."Go and have a closer look at what your Contract contains/ what speed you signed for!"

If it is of a lower-slower speed, change it.

To one that is faster/still affordable for you. (And, yes, Telstra does give and allow you that 'ooption'....to change you Internet Plan.)

re: Half an hour for a song
40MB? 50MB per second? I thought normal Telstra cable was 8MBps and Extreme was 24MBps. Or is that only here in Perth where we get the raw deal on everything...I think we are falling behind even ADELAIDE!

PS. Before I offend anyone from Adelaide, please realise I am not picking on you...I just feel your pain! :(

re: Half an hour for a song
Yes i fully agree with andrew-i have a 40MBPS connection capable of simply awesome download speeds(5 seconds for a mp3),but mostly only a very select few sites offer speeds anywhere near this.As i pay a premium for this speed, and rarely get to use half of it,i will be looking at other options when my contract is up.

re: Half an hour for a song
Andrew, get Telstra (Bigpond)...to test your connection.
And, yes, they will test it..if you're that worried about it.
But, I will agree with APC and Colin.....yeah, sometimes it is the 'source' you're trying to download from...that really is the problem.

re: Half an hour for a song
I was on Telstra Bigpond for a while and I found it pretty good. Mind you, the ONLY plan worth going with on Telstra is their unlimited cable plan for $60 a month. Get a good link and you should be able to download that song in 2 minutes as a wav file.

re: Half an hour for a song
Thanks Colin. I couldn't have said that better myself. I'm with Telstra Broad Band Cable at 50 bps and sometimes downloading stuff from other sites is a nightmare. I hope to be around when fibre optic links are the norm. Wouldn't that be nice? Cheers Andrew.

re: Half an hour for a song
Andrew, Its not your speed that really matters, its the source that you are trying to download this music from. You can have the fastest connection in the world but it means absolutely nothing if the download is coming from someone who has restricted bandwith and probably a dialup connection. You can only download data as fast as the source will allow. Period
