What's happening at Netidentity?
Wednesday, 08 October, 2008
For a few years now my email has been hosted by Netidentity. I haven't had any email for a few days now and I'm not getting ANY help from the company. All my other email is working fine, but this is the service I need because I use it for my business.

Netidentity (the North American domain provider) is having lots of problems at the moment, but hopefully they'll all be fixed soon. (Update: It's still ongoing after two months.)
First the background for people who aren't familiar with Netidentity. For many years now the company has been providing a very clever service. It registers surname domains then sublets subdomains, especially for email, but for other purposes too.
Let's say your name is Carrington. Netidentity has registered www.carrington.org, so there's a chance that your firstname is still available. You could get the email address firstname@carrington.org (for US$30 a tear) and either have the email forwarded to your ISP account, or pick it up with your email client or use the WebMail service.
The problem at the moment (date of posting this) is that the new owners (www.tucows.com) have decided to migrate the servers to a new platform, which is a big job when you have many millions of users around the world.
Things went awfully wrong with the process and users are only just starting to get their email working again, after many days of failure. As far as they know, no email has been lost, but only time will tell.
For more information do a News Google. It's an interesting story.
Update:
Here's a letter Netidentity sent to subscribers in late December 2007. Some users who have contacted us say they didn't receive this email so we're reproducing it here.
Hello,
We are very pleased to announce the availability of our new online customer service system. This new system, available immediately at http://help.domaindirect.com will assist all of our clients in receiving timely help to whatever questions you might have.
We believe that email just isn't good enough for us to be able to get you the answers you need in a timely manner. The Customer Service Center makes it easy to submit all of your information to us in a secure environment, and monitor the progress we make with your questions as closely as you would like without having to deal with email at all. It even lets you re-open old issues, or close issues that have been resolved already. Instead of deciding for you, we let you determine when an issue is resolved.
If you have an open issue with us, don't worry. All previous issues are carried over to the new Customer Service Center and all tickets that are not closed are still being worked on by Customer Service Representatives. This also means that you may already have a Customer Service Center account.
If you have sent us an email inquiry in the past 3 months, you likely already have a Customer Service Center account. To access your account please go to http://help.DomainDirect.com, and then click on lost password on the right hand side. Then enter in the email address that you used to send your original question to us and we will send you the automatically generated password for your account to that email address. From then on your Customer Service Center username is the email address you used.
If you have not sent us a question recently, you can just as easily sign up for a Customer Service Center account by clicking on the Register link on the main page and filling out the information for a new account. You will then have to validate your email address using a link we will send to your email address so you can activate the account.
With any change there needs to be guidance, so we have created a special Knowledge Base category with answers specifically about the Customer Service Center itself. Just go to http://help.DomainDirect.com and click on the Knowledge Base link, and then click on the "Support Center Help" category on the right hand side.
We are very pleased to launch this tool because it will help us give you a lot more information and help about your services in a quicker and more meaningful way. Of course, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us using the Customer Service Center!

Jonathan Clarke

ChrisPosted: 04/11/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? I have several accounts with them and have been a long time customer. Not anymore. They're plagued with system uptime problems. A BIGGER problem is the web UI - it is not secure. Be warned! When you log in using the web interface, your user name and password are passed in the URL as open text. Any site checking your browser history can get this information. Their spam filtering - the worse I have ever seen. McHarrisPosted: 18/10/2008 ROSS NADER has written to me I have finally received an email explaining the technical details of why my web mail was unavailable in both August and October 2008. I am not a technical person, just an end user who paid for a service (which was once a great service) but which has now gone down the drain!
I have written back to Mr Nader telling him I have changed webmail providers to GMAIL, it is working, is relaiable and is free.
Even though Netidentity has offered me a two month reduction when I renew my contract with them, I will not be taking up their offer.
I do hope many more folks who have been thru this difficult time with Domain Direct/Netidentity will do as I have done, and inform Mr. Nader they have left his company and found a more reliable provider.
Before Tucows purchased this company, when it worked that is!!!! I was more than happy to refer friends associates to them to obtain email accounts. NOT ANY LONGER. Look elsewhere folks as ...... Net Identity has gone down the proverbial drain!

Houston was just w/out power for 2 weeks. You learn quickly what it means to not have email or a refridgerator, or a fan in the heat. You need to get your own domain name and hosting service if you're running a business off your account. These guys obviously are doing this job in house and they may or maynot have the management or talent to 1) migrate a major mail system 2) engineer a more fault tolerant mail service. In the hurricane really have to pre-plan how you're going to charge your cell phone. Likewise, you need to have a backup of your data on your home pc, and a backup email account if your provider goes down. I'd like to see a customer service center feature tha allows my email to be temporarily forwarded to my 'alternate' email account. I'd also like to be able to pay for a mail forwarding feature for cheap for a few years till all my contacts realize my new mail identity. Till then I'll keep clicking on my Outlook password request window and cursing the systems analyst fark-ups working at Tucows and making contact with my people via Yahoo. (Where's your subscriber revenue stream going now, Noss?) RobbPosted: 10/10/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? I've also been a client since the old mailbank days. It was personalized and inexpensive. The problems this year have cost me thousands of dollars in liability due to non-receipt of timely e-mails. Their biggest fault is the lack of managing expectations and being able to effectively communicate the status of a crisis. There are two occassions now in the recent quarter that e-mail has been down for more that a few days. My web-page was down for over a month before I finally discovered that this portion of the business had been sold off. I think that the company has some great ideas but their business model seems to be lacking management skills. Kevin QPosted: 10/10/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? I would like to add my complaint to this growing list about NetIdentity! I've not been able to access my email for a few days and I have important emails about my property and finances that I'm expecting. This could soon have serious legal implications. Sure, Tucows may have all sorts of legal disclaimers, but that does little for the credibility of their business as an email service provider.
The service is horrible and inconsistent. I no longer have any faith in being able to access my email, so even when service is restored, I don't think I'll rely on the service any longer. Email is not a luxury. It is a necessity. So when are they going to stop screwing around with something that should just simply work?
NetIdentity/Tucows... please, just fix it. TracyPosted: 10/10/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? Completely unacceptable! I agree with all of you who remember the good 'ol Mailbank days. Cheap and wonderful. I was mad when the price for email was increased so drastically by these fools, but bit my tongue and paid so I could keep the email address I have had since I first sent an email.. I have had this address literally FOREVER. I have NEVER before heard of ANY other mailservice being down for more than an hour. I cannot believe I haven't been able to get in to mine for over 4 days!!!! What makes matters even worse is that the service doesn't EVER work for sh*t even when you CAN log in!!!! At $25/year just for email, I okay with that price, BUT... when they go down, they REALLY go down.. this is twice in the last few month. Down for DAYS, no merely hours. Someone needs fired for how they oversee the security of these servers. I really would not recommend anyone use Domain Direct or NetIdentity for any hosting or email forwarding or other email or website services.

I've been with them since back in the day, and anyone who knows my name knows my email address. I want to think of this as an email-for-life.
But of course, that puts me at a disadvantage, as it makes me very reluctant to jump ship and go permanently to GMail.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be done to transform Tucows/Netidenty's level of service? 99.99% uptime is do-able, as others, even smaller companies, manage to do it. So what's missing since Tucows bought Netidentity that would make the difference?
In the meantime, I sit here know that people are starting to think that they can't count on me, only because I can't count on Netidentity.

The prospect for having the service available is tomorrow at 12:00 PM EST. It's been down since 2:00 PM EST today. Un-f*(&g believable.
I knew this was going to become an issue when I first discovered that these NetIdentity had basically gone through the phonebook and registered a great majority of the sur-name domains. There definitely should have been some type of FCC or FTC SLA and consequetly penalties for poor service imposed, since these guys have damn near a monopoly on most of the sur-name domains.
With great power, comes great responsibility. These guys seem to have missed that lesson.
That's my perspective on the current condition. VincePosted: 13/08/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? Does anyone know of an alternative provider like "netidentity" that is more reliable? First, and most important, their mailservers are on spam lists, so your email from there won't be delivered.
Second, Netidentity/Domain Direct/Tucows
service is THE WORST.
Period.
Ever.
Worse than the Phone Company.
Worse than the Post Office.
Worse than the Department of Motor Vehicles in Hollywood on a Saturday afternoon.
They don't care.
They don't have to.
Their blog strings people along, saying variations on "things will get better" and "wow, we've added a new feature." That is ALL it does.
They make you jump through hoops to post on their blog, and then when you are on, if you complain about Netidentity/Domain Direct/Tucows ROTTEN service, you are thrown off the blog.
I gave up.
At least, I thought I did. I offloaded my many emails (by hand, one at a time, because nothing works on my webmail account), and set the mail server to forward all emails, and I walked away.
I thought.
Then I started missing important email.
Their randomly-set spam filter ingests some unknown quota of the mail they are only supposed to forward.
I have to go in and check it every day, and download the ones I need.
Unbelievable.
I've called and written. No response. One "service" ticket was returned - FOUR MONTHS later, by a person of indeterminate origin, whose misspellings and grammar indicate English is a new hobby for him.
BEWARE! STAY AWAY! DO NOT USE!

I get continual "session expired" messages, usually at critical times when I am sending a lengthy email and with this system it is as nice as the old where it would at least put a copy in the Drafts folder for recovery.
I have a dozen open tickets in the past 35 days with nothing but automated acknowledges.
I have gone to composing in WORD and pasting in the emails, shich I shouldn't have to.
I sent 4 emails this AM anout session expiration and plan to do so every time it happens. I have sent a dozen unanswered emails over the past few days, with no reply. Suppose I could call them, but waiting on hold is a pain, too.
They extended my membership 3 mo after last falls webmail issues and now I am reminded to payup again by May....not likely.
Will be painful to move my web site, but is looking like I have to do it.
Anybody have any new news as to whether things will get fixed soon? Otherwise, I will go domain name shopping elsewhere.
FredPosted: 27/01/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? Big system enhancement last night and now countless domains are being blocked and there is NO user solution. In other words, the White List just doesn't work for this problem.
Of course all attempts to contact NetIdentity either fail or are flat out ignored. I have had open support tickets for over a month on varioius critical problems and there has been NO contact from them whatsoever.
The problem is they have us over a barrel. I have been using my surname domain for 10 years and the hassle to change it will be enormous.
I HATE NETIDENTITY
Constantine PaterasPosted: 25/01/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? You and me both Kevin. Then they have the audacity to claim that these problems have been fixed which is not the case.
They are a joke. Kevin FurlongPosted: 25/01/2008 re: What's happening at Netidentity? That's my netidentity email - please try and contact me.
The touted improvements haven't happened. What has happened -
1. My contact list has been obliterated.
2. My spam has grown exponentially.
3. My trusted senders end up in the spam queue.
4. My sent email is blocked because it's been tagged as potential spam.
5. My trouble tickets have been ignored.
6. My bitching tickets have been responded to.
7. My email filters on the account are not active.
8. The sign in passwords are different for the user site and the trouble ticket site - although the user ID is the same.
9. Often can't log in.
10. Site performance has dropped into the abyss.
Any other reasons to join netidentity?

In that time I have sent them 4 "tickets" and tries calling their customer service numbers a dozen times.
I have yet to speak to anyone there and have received no reply to any of my messages.
An absolute disgrace.

The upgrade has been a disaster.
I have had endless problems with my e-mail account (unable to send, no html format, search application not working etc) since the upgrade and have send message after message to their customer support all without acknowledgment. They don't have any information about this latest round of problems and there is never anyone at the end of any of their support phone numbers.
I'll be cancelling my account

nothing seems to work any more, email forwarding, spam filter, webmail returns errors and when you do get in, its too darn slow to view your messages.
i think the best solution is to cancel my account.

I'm a nedidentity customer, have been for 10 years now because I wanted ONE e-mail address that would stay with me regardless of what ISP I was signed up with. NetIdentity worked BEAUTIFULLY for years, now all the sudden things have gone to $hit. I can't send e-mail. I keep getting error messages. I called their tech support today and they basically told me tuff stuff, live with it. They said under the "new" system they have caps on the number of e-mail addresses you can send to at one time, plus they have broadband caps, after you reach your quota, you get temporarily cut off for a few hours. I told them this was COMPLETELY UNSATISFACTORY, and that's when the guy more or less just brushed me off.
Oh well... I'm looking for a new e-mail address. I'll be dropping not one, but THREE e-mail addresses from NetIdentity once the bill comes due again. Mine, my brothers, and a close friend of mine. The new management should be tarred and feathered for ruining an amazing service (under the old management).
(There's no way you can force them to relinquish the domain name. At best you can find a similar one to register yourself. -PZ) ToddPosted: 30/11/2006 re: What's happening at Netidentity? I, like many others, have had my e-mail at Netidentity for about 7 years. I sent it out and used it for a long term address. It was used for banking, friends, subscripltions etc.
I was carefull about where it was used. I have a "junk" e-mail account for times I am unsure of a company.
Due to the poor service, unreliable mail delivery, greatly increased SPAM and lousy user interface I must change e-mail addresses.
Suggestions:
Register your own domain. It's cheap and easy. You can use something as easy as lastnamemail.com. (ie smithmail.com). Find an e-mail privider (like gmail for domains or everyone.net). If you don't like the service you can move to another provider and never change your e-mail address. drewPosted: 23/11/2006 re: What's happening at Netidentity? So why don't you give GMail a shot? Reliable, free, 3GB of storage - what more could you want?
(I can think of two reasons off the top of my head Drew. 1. Many Netidentity users have had their accounts for years and don't want to have to change their email address. 2. Many users went to Netidentity because they were able to use their own name for email. -Paul Zucker) Helge NormannPosted: 21/11/2006 re: What's happening at Netidentity? No emails is being answered by those in charge of this company. It is like I am not worth shit!
The place to post comments to customer support does not work. It is not possible to send them anything from there.
Some of my emails is lost in thin air. People do not receive them.
Some emails sent to me has gone the same way. My totally FREE Lycos accound is much, much better than this.
NO emails sent is copied to a sent folder any more!
The Netidentity page is the slowest page to load on the entire internet right now..
Is there any HOPE??

Going down down down... Jaap VerduijnPosted: 05/10/2006 re: What's happening at Netidentity? Greetings all!
There is no REAL solution to the NetIdentity/NamePlanet problem anymore: they're already too far on their way, going down under (no pun intended - grin)!
The present situation has been going on for about two weeks now. Although halfway this period I was "allowed" by Tucows to use my webmail again, many of my mails don't arrive on account of providers like AOL not delivering them, but deleting them as spam straight away. I'm in DEEP sh*t, among other things facing an American malpractice suit (which for me as a Dutchman is a quite new experience) on account of my emails first not working at all, and subsequently not getting through to an as yet unkown number of addressees. I shudder at the thought of the plaintiff winning that suit, and so should Tucows.
As I said earlier, there is no REAL solution anymore, just a (partial) alternative to email: I've been shoving many of my clients and friends into http://jaapverduijn.newnetmail.com (NewNetMail).
You might want to have a look there. Although it is far from a COMPLETE replacement for email, it certainly has some very useful options, not to mention the fact that the FREE version will do perfectly for most people. Free, safe, spamfree, virusfree, completely user-controlled and, in contrast with NetIdentity/Nameplanet, it WORKS. Again: it's not a "universal" email, but for limited, private and confidential use it's very good indeed.
For your "general" email, well... I don't think NetIdentity will survive. They managed to get their whole bunch of email addresses placed on lots of spamlists, the result being that that us poor gubbers never know whether our mail will be delivered or not. Sometimes the "postmaster" informs us that it wasn't, but fairly often emails sent from a NetIdentity or NamePlanet account are deleted without either the sender nor the alleged receiver noticing.
They have become unacceptable to serious users so: run. Run like... well.
