Can I recover a file with a CRC error?

Friday, 23 October, 2009

OLD QUESTION

I have a WinZip file that I can't fully unzip because of a bad CRC. It's a backup of a CD that cracked open so I can't access it. Is there any way to recover the file?

Probably not. If the unzipping process reports a CRC error it presumably means that the error is locked up in the zip file, so there's nothing you can do to correct it. .

Having said that, it's worth trying a couple of other zipping programs to see what they say.

(For those who don't know, CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) is a type of file checksum test which tells if the file is corrupt -- even if that corruption is just a single bit that's wrong.)

But I'm intrigued. What do you mean by "the CD cracked open:?

re: Can I recover a file with a CRC error?
Ask yourself "How critically important is this 'corrupt' CRC error file is...to your computer's operation?"
Then, firstly, RENAME it.........and download it, again!
If problem still exists, contact the Web-site from where you got it.
Inform them......of the persisting problem.
If it comes good the 2nd time around, the chances are that you've just had a 'bad download'.
If this is the case, you're basically....'crying over spilt milk', yourself having the intelligence of a complete moron!
Is your Internet Time...so critical that you CAN NOT afford......to do another download! (To verify the problem!.....one way or the other!)
Will your computer stop 'functioning'....altogether!, because of this so-called 'corrupt CRC file'?
(I doubt it! Which does make you the 'complete moron'!)

There's always another Program out there.......that is very likely....to do a better job of the Task you want the 'offending software'...to do!
Too lazy...to do your own exploring, well, it's certainly more a reason to 'classify' your moronic status.

If you can recover, fix, repair CRC on gzip file
Oh my God, it has been on my back the last one week. I have search all over but still nothing. I tried various unzip softwares, WinHex nothing. I guess we still don't have the experts to solve this.

(But that's like finding a quarter of a $10 banknote on the street and expecting someone to give you ten dollar coins for it. If the file is broken, that means it's corrupt. That's what the CRC error shows -- that the file is corrupt. You can't read what isn't there. The best you can hope for is that some of the files will unpack correctly. Try different unpacking utilities. -PZ)

re: Can I recover a file with a CRC error?
one time the folowing trick helps me:
if you have a file like movie that if it cant completely unrar or unzip and it's not a big problem for you to miss some byte you can check the radio button "keep broken file" in Miscellaneous tab in very first wizard when you click at "extract to" in winzip, and winzip wont delete the broken file automatically,
hope it helps

regards

(Thanks Mahmoud. -PZ)

re: Can I recover a file with a CRC error?
I know Winrar has a Repair feature that works with .rar files with CRC errors, but don't know if it'd work for zip files, but it's worth a try - if so, make sure it's a recent version - I think 3.2 is the latest.

re: Can I recover a file with a CRC error?
i found a program called "info-zip's wiz" I can't remember where i got it but the filename is wiz502xN.exe. perhaps a google search on that file will yeild a site. anyway i used this program to extract a zip i had that had a crc error.

PS the program i extracted worked fine. It's possible that the error was in some obscure part of the program that rarely gets used

re: Can I recover a file with a CRC error?
there used to be a utility called pkzipfix for dos, that could sometimes recover zip files, not sure how much it would like windows long filenames. also there appears to be a new windows version at their website (www.pkware.com) but i havent tried it, so i cant say if it will work.
