Why won't watermarks work?
Thursday, 02 July, 2009
Hi,
I'm using Microsoft Office 2003 -- more specifically the Word part of the package. I'm having hassles with different aspects of it and for the life of me I can't get around them.
I have a large document (300+ pages) and because it's not in its final form I put a watermark in it to let me know things are pending, however I was under the impression that if I put in a watermark (or page numbers) that it would do the entire document, however, as I was going through the document I noticed that the watermark wasn't in the background on the first 100 + pages, so I put a watermark in again only to find that this time it only did page 1 to 280 (instead of going to 363). I successfully removed the last watermark I put in but I can't get rid of the original watermark.
I find I have the same problem with page numbering and have gone through the document several times, page by page, to get rid of things in the footer, but it has NOT solved the problem. I can't get the pages numbered correctly.
Have you any ideas as to what I can do to correct these annoying hassles?

I think you're falling foul of a feature in Word that lets you configure different headers and footers for different sections of a document. In your case you don't want this to occur but you're getting it anyway. The solution is to locate and fix up all the sections in your document. To do this, choose Edit, Find and in the Find What box type ^b. Now choose Find Next. This locates the first section break in the document which you can view by clicking the Show/Hide button on the Standard toolbar. If you don't really need a section break, remove it by deleting it. If you need a new page but not a new section, press Ctrl+Enter instead to create it.
Ideally if you don't need sections you should remove all of them. You'll know how many you have because, the second item on the Word status bar tells you how many sections you have – if you don't need any it should read Sec 1 when you're on the last page of the document and when you've stripped them all out.
If you do really need to have multiple sections, at each point when a new section starts, choose View, Header and Footer, and click the Same as previous button on the Header and Footer toolbar for both the Header and the Footer. You can tell the section header you're working on as the text above the header has the section number in it. When you're done, create your header and footer text and page numbers and watermark and they will be applied automatically to all pages in the document. Of course, before you start work on this project, make sure you have a back up of this file won't you? Helen Bradley

I am working with Word 2003, and your suggestion to space down in the header until I was able to select the watermark text was right on! dhPosted: 21/02/2010 re: Why won't watermarks work? Thank you! Even in Microsoft Word 2009 the secret of having the watermark integrated in the first page header/footer solved my similar problem. THANK YOU! CathyPosted: 12/11/2009 re: Why won't watermarks work? I had a watermark anchored to both the title and the header/footer, the only way I could get rid of it was to remove the headers and footers and the title, paste the remainder into a new document, and re-type the title and header/footers (copying and pasting just passed on the problem. LizPosted: 01/07/2009 re: Why won't watermarks work? Thank you so much for this, I only had one section break, with a different header/footer on the first page to the rest of the document. Using the 'insert Watermark' button on the ribbon, I could only have the Draft watermark on the first page OR on all the others (and needed it on all of them) - I used show/hide document text, clicked on the 'Draft' object on page 2 and pasted it into the header on the first page - and now it sticks! It also disappears from all pages when I use 'Remove watermark'.
Big relief, thank you! PaulPosted: 04/02/2009 re: Why won't watermarks work? Wow, the "show/hide doc text" recommendation is what worked for me which allowed me to delete the draft watermark (or picture). How incredibly annoying it is to figure out but how glad I am you posted it here! Thank you! DavePosted: 15/01/2009 re: Why won't watermarks work? Thank you so much. I have been fighting this for hours. I needed to submit multiple versions of the same document with different formatting for approval before printing, and then could get the watermarks off the selected document. YOU SAVED MY BEHIND!!!!!! I've worked with Word for years, manipulating docs, but watermarks are always a pain! M. CompagnoPosted: 29/08/2007 re: Why won't watermarks work? I really appreciate your forum. I have a large document with multiple sections (Word 2003). After I removed the watermark it was still appearing on many of the pages. It was only when I followed your advice to check for an image attached to the header/footer that I was able to delete them. I would have gone crazy trying to figure that one out on my own. Thanks! TecklaPosted: 16/08/2007 re: Why won't watermarks work? Thank you so much! This issue was seriously giving me a headache because I needed to remove the watermark from a very important document -- I used the click inside header select watermark and delete option!!
I can't beleive none of this was posted on the ms office site and then when I called for help they were going to charge me $295 because i'm on a network..... pheuf!
(Like you say - PHEUF! -PZ) MattPosted: 03/05/2007 Removing unwanted watermark Thanks for the tip regarding removing the Watermark through Header/Footer. I was beginning to think I would have to re-write my entire document until I found this post. Keith UPosted: 02/02/2007 re: Why won't watermarks work? I wound up with 2 offending watermarks. A slight variation on the solution above:
- View header/footer
- click on "show/hide doc text" icon
- click on the offending watermark image, hit delete.
- if you can't click on the offending watermark, insert blank lines into the header until its frame overlaps the watermark image and click on the image inside the geader frame and delete it. Then delete the extra blank lines form the header to restore it ot its previous size.
- Click show/hide icon once more to restore text B. SangPosted: 02/11/2006 re: Why won't watermarks work? Finally found a solution at courses.washington.edu/~hs590a/modules/

re. '97 Word. (I use Office XP 2002.)
Sections didn't matter in my case, and I couldn't select the graphic no matter which tool I used -- it was indeed a graphic anchored to a header (and it's still a mystery how it got there). Solution: View header/footer, click on "show/hide doc text" icon, click on the offending watermark image, hit delete. Click show/hide icon once more to restore text, and pau hana. TaniaPosted: 08/12/2005 re: Why won't watermarks work? I t appears to me that Word 2003 does have problems as you describe. I have dealt with sections a lot and in 2003 the first watermark I used did not apply to the entire document - and there was only one section in this document. I can't help with a solution - I suspect it is nothing you have done!
