Can I feed my TV to my LCD monitor'/

Tuesday, 26 January, 2010

I have a 19" TFT monitor with 16:9 ratio.

It also has DVI-D port.

I want to see TV channels on this monitor.

A coaxial cable is connected to my TV so can I do this?

Sometimes we have too much faith in the "magic" of technology. That is, as technology advances we start to believe that it has powers that we simply can't understand.

This is one such case.

Your monitor has a DVD-D input which means that it's capable of being driven by a digital video source such as from a PC or perhaps a DVD or Blu-Ray player with HDMI output (via an HDMI to DVI adaptor). And providing that the monitor can handle this video (it probably can) then yes, you could show these devices on the monitor.

But how are you going to feed the TV video to the monitor? Does your TV have a DVI-D or HDMI output? If not then you can't.

Another possible way to achieve this is to feed the analogue video output of the TV (such as the yellow composite socket) to the monitor if it also has this input.

But even if you could, all you'd get is the same TV channel that was showing on the TV set. Is that what you want? And what would you use to get the sound?

If you want TV on your computer monitor then simply buy a TV tuner card or USB dangle for your computer and feed it with a good antenna signal (necessary).

Think carefully about what you expect any setup to achieve -- it isn't magic.

I agree with you Paul, the TV Tuner card or USB is the way to go. The greatest problem is getting a good signal from your antenna (unless your in a good reception area), in the country digital signals are very sad indeed unless you have the right antenna. Digital ouput is only operating at around 70% at present because we still have analogue, however in 2013, it will be boosted when analogue is fazed out.
