I forget the notebook password

Thursday, 04 February, 2010

I have a Toshiba Tecra A3-S611 and I forgot the password to log in.

The password is in the BIOS.

Please help solve this problem.

Patrick Macarthy, ,

We asked Toshiba Australia to help. Here's the answer:

"If the BIOS password is unknown then only an authorized Toshiba repair centre can remove this password from the notebook.

However the user will need to provide proof of ownership for this notebook and charges may apply for removing the BIOS password."

Hold the [Insert] key down (if you can find it, damn laptops).

Try plugging an external keyboard into it if you have to.

With [Insert] held down while off, cold-boot the laptop.

Hold [Insert] down for about 60 seconds.

This is a very old laptop by todays standards, I doubt it is stolen, it is more likely 2nd hand from an auction.

Oh...
Look at the information on the Toshiba website. The password might be 6 zeroes (from memory, that is the default Toshiba password in the BIOS).

Quote Jim G
"One of the tech geeks where I work said that if you remove the button cell battery and give it 2 minutes, then replace it this wipes the security settings. the laptop should boot up ok once the battery is back in."

Sorry Jim, but that basically applies to desktop computers. The CMOS battery in a laptop computer is probably buried (deep)inside it.

Try disconnecting the charger and removing the battery, then pressing the power button for 30 seconds (or more).

How can a person forget the BIOS Password...on a laptop they use so regularly?
These 'name-brand' PC (Desktop and laptop).......have the BIOS 'password protected', by the companies who sell them.......to prevent ACCESS!......if they are stolen.
Laptops, especially!
Their response, the one PZ has given.........clearly shows this.

Patrick, if that laptop is yours, get it 'seen to'........in the manner PZ/Toshibsa has advised you to do.
(If it is stolen, well, you're the dumbest thief ever! Ain't you?)
