Bandwidth for a game server?

Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

I want to know how much bandwidth I need for making a dedicated server for 8-10 people.

It will be running a first-person shooter game.

Anon , ,

Interesting question.

I don't know the answer but I can think of some ways to find out.

You could connect to a similar game as a user and monitor your own data usage. Then if you multiplied that by 10 it would give you a good idea.

You could also ask some web-hosting companies as they would get asked that sort of question all the time.

You could find a site that;s like what you want to do and politely ask them.

Do any readers have experience in this area?

I could think of a couple of reasons why the OP would want to set up a system for 8-10 people, JC.

Beta Testing.
A group of mates, no outsiders welcome.

In either of those situations the posited requirements would be sufficient. Would also give an idea of what scaling up would require. JMAO

A server (w/ Bandwidth....for just 8-10 Players?!!
What an Elitist you are, Anon!
By the time you set up that server...(the way you want it to be)...........you may EXCEED that player number, say, to 1,000.

For that kind of 'player capacity'.........you'll need a motherboard very high-end, to cope with any/all such 'overloads'. (About as dear as a motherboard you can get!)

Doing it 'on the cheap'.......your way, you'll ONLY wind up.....with very disgruntled players!
Because your 'planned server'.....really sucks!
