Why should I not get this monitor?

Saturday, 13 June, 2009

Why should I not get the 19" Asus LCD Monitor?

It is the VH192D for $155.

Mad-dog , Hills, SA, Australia

I'm not sure that I understand your question MD.

Are you asking why you should buy that monitor or are you asking if there's a potential problem with it?

Here are some thoughts:
  • It's LCD. I can't see any reason why anyone would buy a CRT nowadays. (Are they even readily available?)
  • The price sounds good.
  • 19" is a reasonable size for most people. However if you can afford larger that might have its advantages.
  • It''s wide-screen which suits DVD playing
  • The speed is presumably fast enough for game playing.
  • The native resolution isn't screamingly high (1366x768) but should be quite usable.
  • It only has a VGA input. (Did you need DVI-D?)

Perhaps get back in touch to explain your question.

Ok, I have a AOC 22" wide-screen ( w/built-in speakers...they sound very 'tinny'). top Screen Resolution 'specs' are......1920 x 1080.
I run mine at.......1024 x 768. (this equal to 800 x 600 for a normal sized screen, but, I wear glasses...with the need to see everything I am looking at.)

For the price, $155, I'd say ASUS is trying to offer just another computer-component.....to bolster their trade in such things.
You might get lucky...at buying a good one.....or, worse, to buy a complete dud.
That's the risk these days..when you buy anything, isn't it?

re: Why should I not get this monitor?
If I want to "check" hardware before I buy it, I search for the device's model number along with the term "review" in a websearch. There are a lot of good review sites.

Otherwise...
I look through my stack of PCUser magazines (the best reviews ;-)).

Asus are probably at the top end of the market.

It might be a run-out model.

re: Why should I not get this monitor?
Myself i think that is a good price as i have bought two ASUS VW198T monitors which i believe were the previous models and support WSXGA+1680+1050 native resolution with DVI and two tinny speakers onboard which i dont use anyway for $199 each at WOW and to date i am very happy with them. I run mine at 1600 by 900 and at res it is very clean and crisp without everything being to small.

As for contrast, they seem quite good when it comes to black`s/shadows and shading as i use it for playing games and watching movies and the chrispness of the picture is quite good and bugger all motion blurriness as well at 5ms.

I believe the one you are looking at supports HD and also has the DVI port so for $155 it seems a good price as ASUS seems to be making quite good and reputable headway into the monitor arena.

Just remember one point, your onboard graphics and or graphics card will also influence what you see on the monitor so with a decent card you should have a decent picture and make sure that it can produce the monitors native resolution otherwise it may be a bit blocky and or grainy or to small in the text so check it at the resolution of 1600 by 900 to make sure its quite clean and readable.

Yes, for that price i would buy another ASUS monitor if i needed to.

re: Why should I not get this monitor?
Best option when trying to choose new computer parts is do a search on the model for reviews and forums to see what the world at large is saying about your choice to be.
Asus don't have the best review comparisons around but if you are happy with what you pay for than is your choice and you have to live with it.
I recently purchased a new Samsung 2333 high def 23 inch and although it has a briliant picture at its native resolution the quality is considerably poor at lower resolutions. Found only one
other setting i am happy with because at bative 1920x1080 i need to wear reading glasses to read text. Do the research first.

re: Why should I not get this monitor?
I think what Mad Dog means Paul is that at 155 bucks for the size etc, the price seems very cheap, too cheap perhaps and he doesn't wanna risk money on it if it's gonna be a dud. Andy :)
