Which TV tuner should I get for a laptop?
Sunday, 25 July, 2010
I'm looking at purchasing a TV tuner for the laptop. I'm particularly interested in the Pocket type. Are there any compatibility problems? Can it be operated using only rabbit's ears? Will it work on most laptops?

Personally, I'd give the PC card TV tuners a miss. They limit you to notebook use only.
I bought a PCI TV tuner card, which has turned out to be excellent however I'm kicking myself now I didn't buy an external USB model instead. They plug into any USB2.0 port and work a treat - provided you have a decent antenna. Good old "rabbit ears" antennas are fine for analog TV but unless you're living under the transmission tower itself, "rabbit-ears" antennas will typically only give you stop-start digital TV.
You really need a good full-size antenna to get decent digital TV reception. But if you're still keen, go for a USB2.0 option if your notebook has a USB2.0 port.

There seems to be some confusion about USB TV tuners for notebook computers. You don't buy a tuner to suit the notebook -- you buy it to suit YOU and the place you live.
If the tuner works on one notebook it should work on another. However, the TV systems vary around the world, so buy a tuner locally for certainty that it will work in your region.
Please don't ask us what model you should get for you Wykickamoocow brand computer. It doesn't matter.

Keep twisting in the wind because there is no real solution. Just when you think you bought the right gadget, the rules in transmitting the signal to you change. Face it, over the air signals are a thing of the past as we move into the digital High Definition era. You have to go cable or ADSL ethernet.(sp?) Seems no one wants to touch the solution to the last one. It's ironic, you get you TV through an internet signal, but try and hook it up to your laptop and you are SOL. They have tunes for all the cable inputs but not ethernet. Amazing! rod roiesPosted: 26/05/2010 re: Which TV tuner should I get for a laptop? which tv channel should i watch? Thanks Pz, I guess I wasnt clear, which ones will my laptop run? I have seen some but they require 2.0GHz and up so I need to know what tv tuner my laptop will run?
(Sorry for the confusion. Tuners shouldn't need a particularly fast PC. All of the hard work is done in the tuner itself. The PC's job is to display the picture - and do the recording if that's what you want. Not all USB tuners come with Mac drivers but as long as you're using Windows you should be fine. I'd buy on brand name, price and features and then return it if it doesn't "deliver". If you go to a large store you may even be able to try before you buy. -PZ) RachelPosted: 21/04/2008 re: Which TV tuner should I get for a laptop? (Hi. I don't know the brand but my guess is that most of these devices will have similar performance. But remember that this is a very poor way to achieve what you want. The quality of the picture will be low - much better that you buy an inexpensive LCD TV for the PS2. (Okay. There wouldn't be a built-in TV antenna in that PC. If you do buy a USB tuner it will either need its own small antenna or a cable to a good rooftop antenna, depending on where you are. As for the picture quality, digital-TV tuners either work or they don't. That is, if there's enough signal picked up by the antenna they give a picture, otherwise it breaks up and drops out.
