I have a pen drive that I bought a few months ago. It's an Apacer USB 2.0 Flash Drive with 128M in it.
My problem is that whenever I try to open it on other computers, it's always 'not formatted'. This happens when I've saved some files from my own laptop. If I format it on other computers, I can save stuff on it but then I won't be able to see anything in it when I open it using my own laptop again.
Is it because of my laptop or is it because I didn't safely remove the pen drive when I used it?
Please shed some light on this.

 I’m sorry, but I’m afraid I really don’t know what the problem may be. Here are a few possibilities to consider:
- Are you formatting the Pen Drive to a file format that is unsupported on the other computers you are trying to read it with? Pen drives generally use the FAT file format by default. If you are formatting it, for example, as FAT32 then this may be the heart of your problem.
- Have the other computers had their Windows updates installed, and USB drivers/patches updated?
- Have you tried using the Pen drive in other USB ports on those computers?
- Are you are trying to use it on Windows 98 computers? You should have at least Windows Me installed to use a Pen drive.
- If the computer you are trying to use it with has only USB 1.1 available, have you tried using USB 2.0 drivers with it regardless?
- Generally you shouldn’t strike problems by not using the “Safely Remove Hardware” pop-up, but are you making sure that you’ve closed all files residing on the Pen Drive before you remove it?
- Perhaps the Pen Drive is faulty?
I’m not all that familiar with using USB flash drives, and the above checklist was put together after conversations with friends and colleagues who use them regularly. Overwhelmingly, all of them suggested that the ‘best’ way to use USB flash drives was to use them with an updated installation of Windows XP, and to use the inbuilt capability of Windows XP for them, rather than drivers or software which accompanies the devices on installation disks.
That outlook sits well with my own approach to using ‘plug-in’ components. I’d rather use Windows XP’s inbuilt capabilities than the drivers or software which accompany them, wherever possible. Installation disks for my optical mice, digital camera and quite a few other pieces of equipment sit unused in my office cupboard!
But none of the points I’ve put forward are definitive, so I’ll turn your question over to our more technically minded readers for further suggestions.

I have copied some songs(in a folder) to my pen drive from my computer.after wards i try to open the files it shows choose a program to be open these files but its a folder file.The file size is about 1gb but it shows only 32kb.how can i open it.

it show some folder size is larger than 6 gb but data is not show

Solution: Format entire Hard disk and Install Vista first and install XP on Vista. Its starts work fine.

(What operating system do you have on the PC? Does the USB port work with other devices? Were there instructions with the drive? Does the drive work on another PC? All is fine but sometimes when I copy softwares or videos. the files become corrupted and can not be deleted. File names change to gibberish language. I have to format. I automatically copy so files from itself to a new folder if you creat one.
So my main problem is that I can't copy video, softwares, movie s and so on.
If anybody knows the solution then please let me know.

i've got the same sort of problem.
except i can copy files to my pen drive and they appear there until i unplug it from the computer when the files dissappear but the folders that i have created and copied remain.
also when i try to delete a folder it says 'cannot delete the folder is not empty'...
strange!!
any help from u pro's out there would be much appreciated....
also there is no chance of me getting a replacement as i bought it off ebay and the man i bought it off is refusing to exchange or replace it...

(The first thing you have to do is make sure that Windows is working with USB at all. Once that's dione you'll probably have to install some extra software tio run the drive. (Hi Raj. I think you're overestimating our powers. If that really is a Kingston product then you should contact your local Kingston distributor in India. Perhaps if you take it to a local store that sells that brand they can test it for you. Am I the only one in the universe who's not having trouble with these thingies :) I bought two "Mercury" 256Mb drives awhile ago. Plugged them both in,transferred data,formatted when I needed to and have a hell of a good time with them.
Of course,if I want to do any serious back-up I use my external 320Gb hard drive.
Still they're ok if you want to move a small amount of info to another PC.
And by the way :)Let XP detect them and always use the "Remove Hardware Wizard" thingie in the corner.

(There are utilities that will help recover files from a device such as a pen drive. (If your computer does that it's because it doesn't know what the file is. That is, you're trying to open a file that's on the pen drive. I did notice that ALL removable media were affected - i.e my digital camera was also "not formatted" and my optical drives would not see a CD or DVD. The only workaround I found was to leave the device attached (or the disc in the drive) and reboot - then everything would work. I wish I could say I worked it all out. I did a fresh install of Windows XP SP2, and things were fine for a while, but now the problem is creeping back.

except i can copy files to my pen drive and they appear there until i unplug it from the computer when the files dissappear but the folders that i have created and copied remain.
also when i try to delete a folder it says 'cannot delete the folder is not empty'...
strange!!

I have two of my own, and look after several at work, and we swith between XP, 2000 and 98 with no problems whatsoever.
Having said that, I always make sure all files are closed before removing, and use the safely remove hardware icon in XP and 2000.
Also check that you don't have a read/write protect switch on the side of it and if you do make sure it is unlocked before you try to use it. I strongly feel the pen drive is faulty. I've been using a USB2.0 (256 MB) one myself for sometime now and connecting it to various machines when on the fields, without any hickup. The system will tell you when the drive is plugged into a slow USB port, and will self adapt to the condition and that's it. Win98 does require loading the drivers for the drive (USB driver installation rules apply), then no problems.
I prefer to always stop the device before unplugging as advised cause I didn't invent the thing.
Never needed to reformat it either as simply deleting unwanted items was sufficient to recover space.

There is a big question mark on the device in computer management. However, it works on my second computer as it recognised it. My second flash memory drive from another manufacturer works on both computers. Its just one of those odd things. |
