Can I replace a notebook keyboard?

Saturday, 15 May, 2004

I returned my non-working notebook PC to the company that we bought it from. They said that it couldn't be repaired. (We'd spilt a cup of coffee on it.)

It seems to work fine except for a few keys on the keyboard. So I was wondering if there is anywhere that I can buy a new laptop keyboard?

You'd like a store called Laptop-Keyboards-R-Us.

Most notebook PC's have keyboards that can be replaced. You'd have to approach the importer if the dealer won't sell you one. Or you could take it to a repairer who would source it for you. If it's a brand name, it shouldn't be a problem. If it's a no-name, it might be a bit harder.

Of course it could also be that the damage isn't permanent. For instance, it could simply be that sticky coffee residue has seeped into an electrical connection, and this can be cleaned. Again, if you don't feel capable, get a repairer to look at it.
And ... it may simply be that the dealer you took it back to said "no, it isn't covered by warranty" but will fix it for a price. Have you asked?

If there's no chance of getting the keyboard fixed you could at least use the notebook by plugging in an external keyboard. This might be a USB, a PS/2 or even a legacy keyboard, depending on what connectors the notebook has.

Did someone ask for service? Yes, u can replace your notebook keyboard. But it is advise before purchasing if you intend to install it yourself that YOU can remove it in the first place. Or as above you could seek a notebook technician like me.
