How do I wipe the disk and install XP?

Friday, 04 June, 2004

Can you list the procedure for doing a completely clean install of XP on an existing PC please.

Felicity-Anne Quinn, Sydney, NSW

Making your system run from the Windows CD

First thing to do, after you've done all the preparatory backing up of data and collecting together of the various bits ‘n' pieces you'll need set up your system again afterwards, is to reboot your system, go into BIOS setup and ensure that your system is set to Boot from CD-ROM as ‘1st Boot Device', and your primary Hard Drive as ‘2nd Boot device'. Make the change(s), if necessary, and then pop your Windows XP CD into the drive, save and exit from BIOS setup, and watch for the text message to pop up asking for you to ‘Press a key to boot from CD-ROM”. Make sure you do so!

You will be asked if you wish to install Windows XP. Press <ENTER> to begin the process. You will then be presented with an ‘End User License Agreement' . Read it if you wish (you really should, you know, but very few people actually do) and you should press <F8> to accept the terms and continue.

Because an existing Windows XP installation is detected, you will be presented with a screen asking if you wish to repair it. Press <Esc> to bypass the process (do not repair).

Wiping your Hard Drives clean

The next screen you are presented with is where most people have difficulty. You will be presented with a screen offering some choices of action, and a list of existing hard drive partitions which also indicate existing Windows installations. My suggestion for the best course of action is this:

  • Remove existing partitions
  • Create new NTFS partitions
  • Install Windows XP on the first partition of your Primary hard drive

Highlight the first partition, press <D> to indicate you wish to delete it, and follow the prompts to remove the partition. Continue the process for other partitions. When you've finished removing the partitions, and are left with a list indicating the drives and the ‘Unpartitioned space' they contain, highlight your primary drive and press <C> to indicate you wish to create a new partition. Type the size (in Megabytes) you wish the partition to be, or press <ENTER> to create a partition using all available space on the drive. Repeat the process until you've created all the partitions you wish to have.

A more detailed description of the process can be found in the section “How to partition and format your hard disk using Windows XP Setup” from the KnowledgeBase article “ HOW TO: Partition and Format a Hard Disk in Windows XP”

Putting Windows XP on your System

When you've finished, highlight the partition you wish to install Windows XP to (the first partition on your Primary Drive is the best) and press <ENTER>.

Follow onscreen prompts during the process of installation, and ensure you leave the Windows XP CD in the drive whenever your system reboots during the process. If you get another prompt to “Press any key to boot from CD” keep your hands in your pockets! You don't want to go back and start over again!

Note : If you are using an XP Upgrade CD, you will be asked for a qualifying product during installation. Pop the CD with your older version of Windows into the drive, press <ENTER> or click ‘OK' as prompted, and return your Windows XP CD to the drive when asked. You may be prompted to ‘Create a Startup disk' and you can safely ‘Cancel' from that step if you do not wish to create a Startup diskette.

Provide such local information as requested during installation, and also such details of existing Local Networks that the system is connected to. Provide details of User Accounts you wish to have on the system, and passwords if you choose to use them. When the process has completed, you will be prompted to ‘Activate' Windows XP. Opt out of Activation at this stage, because it's better to Activate after you got your system fully set up, and have confirmed that all is working as it should. You can also safely bypass the Product Registration, as it serves little practical purpose.

When all is completed, you will need to enter your password, if you've set one, to access the Windows XP Desktop.

Setting Up your System after Windows is Installed

Pop your Windows Security CD into the drive, and install Service Pack 1 if necessary, and the other updates included on it. If you have internet access at this stage via an Ethernet ADSL connection or similar, log onto Windows Update immediately you've done so, and download and Install all other available Security Updates. If you have to install a dial-up modem and configure your Internet access, leave the process until after you've installed your system components and other peripherals, and unsure you use Windows Update as soon as you've gained Internet access.

Note : If you have ADSL Internet access via a USB ADSL modem, I'd strongly suggest you replace your modem with an Ethernet one, and have it configured and connected before you start installing Windows! See “How can I assign IRQ's on an Albatross?” for fuller explanation of my reasons for saying so!

With Windows installed and your Security Updates attended to, it's time to install drivers and driver updates for your system. Do so in this sequence for best results:

  • Motherboard chipset drivers
  • Display drivers
  • Soundcard drivers
  • Other internal component drivers
  • Other peripheral device drivers

When you have those installed, and have checked that they all function correctly (with no conflicts or problems reported in ‘Device Manager') you can begin the process of setting up you Desktop display as you wish to have it, installing your software, and reloading your backed-up data files. Make your changes one by one, testing carefully after each change to ensure your system is stable. Use ‘System Restore' to create a restore point before each change, in case something you load causes problems.

Some final tips:
  • Don't be hasty with the ‘Installation CDs' which accompany your equipment. For things such as cameras, scanners and so on, try them first to see if Windows XP itself recognizes and uses them correctly. If you do need to install from a CD, try installing ‘Drivers only' as a first step. The included software will sometimes disrupt your system's operation, hiding data files in unlikely places such as deep within Program Install directories. Using mainstream applications programs for your computing tasks is always the best option.
  • Say ‘No!' to those downloaded ‘freebies' that are designed simply to pretty up your Desktop, or add amusing little ‘toys' to your system. Almost all of them contain ‘Net Nasties' which will, at best, detract from system performance.
  • Install your applications programs one by one, updating them via the internet as appropriate, and fully configuring and testing them before proceeding to the next program. Installing everything in one go will mean that any problems arising will be almost impossible to track down later.
  • Avoid installing multiple instances of ‘burning software' as far as possible. Multiple instances can adversely impact on drive recognition and autoplay detection.
  • Use inbuilt functions of Windows XP as far as possible, rather than utilities which replicate them.
  • Avoid file-sharing software like the plague! It might be nice to have a world of ‘free' stuff available to you, but the ‘nasties' introduced to your system from infected or otherwise suspect stuff on the hard drives of PCs elsewhere aren't just a possibility, they're an inevitability! And finally
  • You've almost certainly had problems of organizing and finding the various files and data you have stored on your system. Now is the time to look at, and make changes to, your system of Folder organization, before it gets any worse!

Bonus : And here's a ‘Bonus Extra'! For those people who wish to use ‘Imaging' software to protect themselves against the future need to start over again, here's a step by step outline of the process showing what to do, and when. (You'll notice that John's procedures follow a little different sequence to my own, but the principles are the same.

My Reinstall Process

Before Starting A Reinstall

  1. Disconnect all external devices (printers, scanners etc)
  2. Find all the driver disks for things that don't have standard drivers in XP. XP can find drivers for many devices on the Web. However there are a lot of devices for which drivers are not automatically found. Some that I have personally come across include a USB memory card reader, film scanner, and TV tuner cards (analogue and digital).
  3. Backup important files, email, documents, financial, video, photo, and so on.

Reinstall Process

  1. Backup important files (yes, I already mentioned it, but listen this time)
  2. Partition drive (if required) and format drive C. Suggest at least two partitions - C for OS and programs, D for normal data files, E and higher (if used) for video files etc.
  3. Install Windows XP. Don't activate immediately!!!
  4. Install Zone Alarm
  5. Install Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) or other anti-virus program that has frequent updates, and will constantly monitor inbound and outbound email and disk writes.
  6. Connect to the 'Net
  7. Live update NAV
  8. Windows Update for Win XP
  9. Update Zone Alarm
  10. Image drive C with either Ghost or Drive Image (this is the baseline image). Temporarily this image can made be to another partition on local drive, later it should be archived to DVD or (multiple) CD
  11. Plug in external peripherals. After drivers load, check that the relevant peripherals operate OK..
  12. Install drivers for hardware and peripherals which XP did not automatically install drivers.
  13. Load commercial software. After each program is installed, create a new image of drive C. Don't overwrite old images - you may need them if an install screws something.
  14. Load shareware/freeware. After every two or three programs are installed, create a new image of drive C.
  15. Restore data files (documents, emails and so on.) - preferably to drive D so that future images don't contain them, and restoring from an image does not overwrite them).
  16. If the system is stable, activate Windows and application software
  17. Create and archive a new image of C drive - this becomes the "standard" image used for most future restores. A copy should be in a separate location - at least a different room in the house, preferably in a separate building (such as in a desk drawer at work) so that it and the house will not be affected by the same disaster such as bushfire or flood.
  18. Each time you add software, create a new image as soon as you are confident that the system is stable. This becomes the latest "working" image - but does not replace either the "standard" image or the "baseline" image . (Note: Make sure your system is scanned and declared safe for viruses, Trojans, spyware and other malware before you make the image – Terry)

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
It should be noted that if you have the original version of XP and a hard drive greater than 120 gb you *must* partition your hard drive to get the install to work.

I learned this the hard way just recently. :P

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
Stop ...
The answer should be:
How old is your computer, what speed cpu, memory. Will xp support the hardware!
Many installations have gone terribly wrong and often the disks with the drivers are not available.
It is not as simple as putting a disk in and upgrade. If you do not use NTFS you may also find that you have with FAT limited the size of hard drives to use!
Some lousy traps are lurking in the background - buy a cheap 2nd hd hard drive and copy the lot - than go for it. AT least your old system is saved!
Cheers

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
A very good friend, on a very tight budget, has this antique HP Pavillion 6746C, circa July, 2000, with low horsepower, low RAM, Win ME (ugh), a regular POS by 2007 standards. Nothing new works very well. She upped the RAM to the Max, and asked me to install XP. I could not get the puter to recognize the CD even though I change the Bios, etc.

The clues in the above postings told how to do it and not make the 6-disk set from MS to get to the CD. The clues did not work. So, I made the 6-disk MS set. Guess what? After loading them it stopped with an error and said to check the XP CD for physical damage as there was a disk problem. Don't ask how many times I used the disk. Tried another, and walla, the formatting and clean install went slick. Lots of hours invested in this old puter, and all the time the CD was on and off its tracks. Damn! No wonder the drive would not recognize it on a regular basis--oh yeah, it still works a little, but not regularly in this 4X drive!;

I found that if you are trying install a second copy of XP on the same hard disk after using a full format it won't necessarily accept the second key! (I'm not talking about dual booting here)

The only solution is to zero fill full format the hard disk!

I dont want to do a clean installation of Windows XP, or anything of the sort. All I want to do is wipe my C: drive clean with simple command prompt, so I can transfer my hardrive to another computer(physically). Is there a way to do this? <[> (There are utilities that will do this. Some are free. They write a series of zeroes on the disk, for instance, replacing all existing data. -Paul Zucker)

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
We have a saying in the electronics industry; "If it works, don't fix it." In the case of computers however, it should say "If it works, it probably isn't turned on!"
I have been working with electronics and computers for over 20 years now and still I believe I have only scratched the surface. But then maybe I am a just a bit slow. However, as I have been "erasing" drives (both intentionally and not) from days when they were cassette recorders, I feel I have some knowledge to impart here on 'wiping' a disk. Firstly, learn some DOS! If you are in this chair once, you will be in it again. Learn how to make a bootable floppy which has key commands such as 'format' and fdisk'. Learn your computers' heart-starter - the BIOS, so that you can temporarily change settings for the install process. Typically, the only change
you will need to make in the BIOS is to set the primary boot device to the floppy drive so that when you boot(with your prepared boot disk in the drive) the computer will start in DOS mode. We use good ol' DOS here simply to use its formatting commands to prepare the hard-drive for the XP install. Obviously, after the XP install (or perhaps even during if you are observant) the BIOS settings will need to be changed back.

To summarise:

1. Prepare a bootable floppy.
2. Start you computer and enter BIOS setup.
3. Change primary boot device to the floppy drive.
4. Put boot diskette into its drive. Restart computer.
5. When C:\ prompt appears type FDISK and setup your partition/s.
6. Restart computer.
7. When C:\ prompt appears, type FORMAT/S to format the drive.
8. When formatting is complete, restart the computer and run scandisk. If everything checks out, restart your computer again and enter BIOS. This time change the primary boot device to the CD ROM that you will be installing XP from. Put the XP disk into its drive and reboot. The computer will start from the ROM and go into its install (with maybe some prompting).
9. You should be able to install the rest without too much hair-pulling by following Microsofts' bouncing prompts.
That should be enough to get you out of trouble(or into it). Don't forget to put your BIOS settings back.
If you continually have problems with these things then consider: Life is short, don't spend half of it dancing with Microsoft!

Best regards,

The Wandering Apprentice

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
it is easy too. what you do is just to format all you harddisk partions.

but first you need to make a bootable window 98 softdisk so that you can enter dos system to format the harddisk.

boot from softdisk, the system will get in DOS automatically, type format x: (x:c ,d e....).after that, all the data in the computer will be wipped.

next, get out softdis, and put windowxp cd into cdrom, boot the computer .follow the indication, you will install the windowxp.

There is something in Bernie Rodgers Post of 02/06/2005. ■--buy a new one. why bother with problems■
Cost of new Seagate 200Gb hard-disc $165 ready to roll.
Cost of wiping, reformatting etc $75 per hour. Add that you are working on what is essentially a second hand hard-disc that has been used for x hours.
It probably is cheaper to bin the old hard-disc and shove a new (and bigger) one in.

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
Let me tell u someting about clean install XP....

1) First you have to make bootable Disk of XP, it will be created by ADD & REMOVE Program in the Control Panel. You need Startup Disk.

2) Now, you have to change booting priority from the BIOS setup, and make this to Booting from CD.

3) Insert the Startup Disk, now it will treat as 3 party disk to your computer. so you can delete primary or any partition.

4) Now, if you want to create new partition for clean installation, you have to decide which type of partition type will suitable for you. either FAT32 or NTFS, If you want to create FAT32 partition then create it, or Create NTFS Partition.

5) After Create the partition. Restart Computer.

6) Due to Restart, changes will be mounted permanently,

7) Please, remove the Startup Disk, and Insert Windows XP Installation disk....

8) Now go to folder name I386, from command line prompt c:/> and write WINNT. Due to this it will start Windows XP installation.

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
Couple of things..

Installing XP.. dont waste too much time using FDISK on a Windows 98 Boot Disk, create partitions and formatting during the XP install. Create a second partition to drop an image onto it.

Installing XP onto brand name boxes (HP, Compaq, Dell etc).. Make sure you grab the drivers from manufacturers website prior to losing net connection.

Upgrading a system like a HP6616 (98 OS) to XP.. You will be able to grab generic drivers like the Agre modem driver from anywhere, however you might lose functions like multimedia keyboard extra keys. HP will tellyou to upgrade machine instead of giving you drivers.

You can find a lot of good sites for Step By Step installations.

- Install all drivers
- Run Service Pack 2 straight away and all updates.
- Once you have your system the way you want drop virtual memory down to 1mb on initial and max settings and use a program like ghost to create an image of your system. This way you will have 5-15 mins to restore instead of a few hours.

Ingolf is correct - make sure you check your hardware & do a google for it to locate recent versions of the drivers, esp modem & sound cards, XP does not carry a lot of info for older machines, i just did a clean install on a HP6511 (yr1999) & i had this problem. everything else works fine although i did vamp the ram up to 192mb to help. a bigger hard drive will also come in handy as you will run out of space very fast on an older machine. :-))

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
If you use a program called ranish, it will make dividing up your hard drive and formatting your hard drive a lot easier and quicker that fdisk. I have used it hundreds of times and never had a problem with it. It is good for doing a clean install on any partition of your hard drive. That way you can also have win98 or even linux on another partition. If you want to have 2 operating systems on the one hard drive, then the older operating system must be installed first.
Have fun!

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?

For those who didn't wipe thier drive with a boot floppy, check your directory tree, you will find that window XP just deletes the references to the old install and then creates new ones. The only way to get a truely "clean" install is to use a boot floppy - so much for progress.

Hope this helps

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
Getting defences up quickly is a must when installing a fresh copy of XP. A firewall and anti-virus are a must, as you don■t want to infect a pc just as soon as you■ve fixed it. I■ve found that making a list of all the stuff i use (with version numbers) is much better than just making a CD of them, as i can check the list to see if newer versions are available before reinstalling. The easiest method I■ve found is:
■ format drive and install windows
■ install firewall and antivirus software (and ad-aware software (eg Ad-Aware SE http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/, to prevent and remove ■net nasties■), update them and the OS
■ install drivers and their software (burning software for burners, scanning software for scanners, ect)
■ Install main programs (found on CD, eg. MS Office)u
■ Install freeware/downloads (eg. acrobat reader).
■ run antivirus and ad-aware scans, run Disk Cleanup and defragment the drive
■ run update programs on all software and schedule regular virus and ad-ware scans
I use the dual partition method because when you format the drive, you should of course make a backup of your documents, but having to copy them back can take a long time, also it makes them easier to organise and leaves your OS and programs free space, even if you■ve run out of space for documents, which prevents system crashes. Also you can store your setup CD with the updates, drivers and downloads on this seconded partition, which makes for faster installations. Al.

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
I prefer to use a WIN98SE boot disk (floppy) and use fdisk to delete the current partitions. Then booting to the XP CD allows you to do a clean install.
To do this, find someone who has win98se on their system (still plenty around) and from Add/Remove Software, you can make a floppy boot disk.
When you've done this, go back to your system
and put the floppy in, leave it in until ready to install XP or other OS. Boot your system and enter the BIOS (as described above) and set Floppy A as 1st boot device, CD-Rom as 2nd boot device, then primary hard drive (or IDE0) as 3rd boot device. Exit the BIOS and system will reboot.
System will start from floppy. When A: prompt appears, type FDISK and press enter.
Follow prompts to delete partitions on hard drive. Once finished you can exit FDISC. Do not use this version of FDISK to set up partitions for XP. When back at A: prompt, remove the floppy and put XP CD in cd drive.
Reboot system and when asked to boot from CD-Drive, press a key. This will then allow you to install XP as with a brand new drive.
I know it works this way as I do it all the time and have not had any problems with ANY version of Windows, including NT.

yep u must mention that lots of people cant really run xp as their systems r for win /95/98/me but u can run xp over top on many systems it helps heaps with various components but can as with any software be a pain to live with inherited problems.reformatting should be shown to older people to remove their fears of i dont know what to do not that it will put people out of a job but its not that hard either. good note keeping is essential to look back if your memory is errr getting lost and 30sec ago what did i press and oops i erazed the disc before i --
and dont forget to always always back up your good stuff fully then small incremental backups as needed or set up to only save small changes to pictures documents ect happy pc in bye

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
WOoooo and I thought I had problems.

Stop...... (no 2 with a few more ...)

Felicity, Terry was correct in his answer.

I have no prob with Norton because I don't use it.

I am well aware of Zone Alarm and it's simply an advertisement against itself. If you've seen their adds you know ZA hoovers.

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
I■m more amazed that you would be installing Norton's Anti-Virus (NAV). Not only is it the worst Anti-Virus program but also it is also impossible to get off the HDD other then formatting. It is also incompatible with a lot of software and drivers. I have fixed more HDD■s that have been corrupted by NVA then by actual viruses. NVA does not take to Overclocking very well and is constantly running in the background. NVA is one of the most resource intensive programs I have seen and will slow any high end (P4 3.4Ghz) system down quite a lot, generally to an unacceptable level of performance. I have also heard that NVA uses spyware, and due to the fact of ■Live Updates■ is very successful in accessing the internet. (Spyware is unconfirmed). I do recomend Zone Alarm Pro to all user's, although it could slow down on line or LAN gaming performance. It is easy to disable in a controlled LAN environment.

RE: installing XP
I have done full clean installation of windows XP by simply inserting the disk while in windows and when the message pops up that do you want to install windows XP, repair and other options. I simply opted for installing, and followed the procedures as requested. The option of formating also comes and i did format the hard drive. I would like to know if there is any drawbacks to this way. Or is it equivalent to the procedure that you have mentioned.

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
how do you go to bios? (When the PC is booting, there will be a message such as "Press DEL to enter setup". Take note and do what the message says. Or check the handbook for your PC or motherboard. -Paul Zucker)

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?

FORMATTING THE HARDDRIVE ON XP THE EASIEST WAY IS;= BOOT YOUR COMPUTER FROM YOUR XP CD

IF YOU CAN'T BOOT THE COMPUTER FROM THE XP CD THEN GO INTO YOUR BIOS BY STARTING THE COMPUTER AND PRESSING THE DELETE KEY .
SCROLL DOWN TO "ADVANCED BIOS FETURES-PRESS ENTER
SCROLL DOWN TO "FIRST BOOT DEVICE-PRESS ENTER
SCROLL DOWN TO "CD ROOM-PRESS ENTER
PRESS " F10-IN THE INSERT BOX - SAVE TO CMOS AND EXIT BY:FOR (Y/N)=TYPE Y-PRESS ENTER

WHEN THE COMPUTER STARTS UP AGAIN , PRESS ANY KEY TO START FROM THE XP CD , AND THEN IT WILL GO INTO
"WINDOWS SETUP"
---------------------------------------------------------------------
IF YOU CAN BOOT YOUR COMPUTER FROM YOUR XP CD TO BEGIN WITH ,THEN ALL YOU DO IS:PUT YOUR XP CD IN THE
DVD DRIVE, AND RESTART THE COMPUTER ,KEEP PRESSING ANY KEY WHEN IT BOOTS AND IT WILL GO INTO"WINDOWS
SETUP"
WHEN THE "SETUP" IS READY PRESS THE LETTER R, BUT DON'T PRESS "ENTER
TO "WHICH WINDOWS INSTALLION" WOULD YOU LIKE TO LOG ONTO=
TYPE 1-PRESS "ENTER"
TYPE IN THE ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD IF YOU HAVE ONE-PRESS "ENTER"
IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE=JUST PRESS "ENTER"
TO C:\WINDOWS-TYPE FORMAT (SPACE) C:-PRESS"ENTER"
TO PROCEED WITH FORMAT-TYPE Y-PRESS "ENTER" AND THE HARDDRIVE WILL BE FORMATTED IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES.

WHEN YOU GET THE SCREEN BACK THERE WILL BE AN OPTION TO DELETE ANY PARTITION YOU DON'T WANT, FALLOW THE EASE STEPPS,BUT USUALLY IT IS REALLY NOT NESCESERY, JUST REBOOT THE COMPUTER, IT WILL BOOT FROM THE
XP CD AND IT IS VERY EASIE TO FALLOW THE WINDOWS INSTALLATIONS STEP BY STEP. I HAVE REFORMATTED MY HARDDRIVE MANY TIME, AND THAT IS THE EASIEST , SIMPLEST WAY TO DO IT.
GOOD LUCK "ED

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
I'm amazed that you would recommend installing Zone Alarm!! All the versions of it that I have ever used are full of intrusive Spyware. In fact it caused one of my previous systems to crash so badly that I had to reinstall the whole thing again (without zone alarm). Is there a new incarnation or am I missing something? (Hi Dave. I'll ask the other HelpStation people to comment. I've never heard of spyware in ZoneAlarm, but that doesn't mean that there isn't. -Paul Zucker)

re: How do I wipe the disk and install XP?
Cheers
Ingolf
