OK I just bought Call of Duty 2, and when I try to play the game it says
DirectX Error DirectX has encountered an unrecoverable error. Please check DirectX Help document for possible details.
What do I do? I have a Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family ... HELP!!

 The honest answer, Josh, is that if you wish to play recent and graphically intense games you should add a decent dedicated graphics card to your system, rather than trying to play them on integrated Intel graphics. Although Intel has self advertised its integrated chipset graphics solutions as “Extreme graphics” they're really anything but that. The chipsets lack the graphics processing power necessary to do justice to more recent and demanding game titles, and are not up to the task of handling the lighting effects which are an integral part of gameplay in Call of Duty 2 on the PC.
In any case, the specific game you’ve mentioned isn't playable on Intel integrated graphics at all, as Intel has acknowledged here.
If your PC is a desktop system with a graphics card expansion slot on the motherboard you should seriously consider adding an nVidia 6600GT card or better, and using that rather than the integrated Intel graphics. The performance improvement would be dramatic for ALL your gaming! If it's a laptop with no provision to add an alternative graphics card then perhaps you should resign yourself to playing less demanding games.
By the way. You should ensure that the version of DirectX installed on your system is the most recent 9.0c version. The full 33M installation package can be downloaded from Microsoft and downloading it will give you more flexibility for reinstalling and correcting problems than the usual Internet installation.

What happens then is that Patches are released for these problems as a possible fix.
Other times its outdated drivers or its hardware which just cant support the game requirements meaning its upgrade time.

I've been playing call of duty modern warfare 2 just fine up until something happened and my computer couldn't boot up. So I had to reinstall my whole system. After that, everytime I try to play, it says direct x encountered an unrecoverable problem after the first mission. It loads the second mission and then it has the error. I've tried turning my hardware acceleration off and I even used dxdiag to check for errors but all the categories said no problems found. Then in multiplayer, I get this weird infinite loop problem and I don't know how to fix it. I really wanted to play this game but it just won't work for me. Please anyone? Any suggestions?

COD4 would load and the Intro briefing would play, but the load bar across the bottom wouldn't grow. Also I could hear the System Error sound, but when I tabbed out, it was gone.
COD2 would play just fine until one of the first Russian Missions and then it would die half-way through the load and I would hear the System Error sound. When I tabbed out of it, the infamous DirectX message would be there.
Okay, long story short, this is what I did, most of which may not help the problem, but it made me feel better doing it, so I would include most of it.
I reinstalled DirectX from the March 2009 package.
I rolled back my ATI Video Drivers one level, (but kept the latest ones just in case).
I restarted COD2, got the same error, tried using the Resume command again and this time, I switched my game to DirectX7 and it loaded the mission. As soon as I was in the game, I switched back to DirectX9 and played without a problem. It did do it one other time, but since then, I have played through the game several times.
COD4 was a concern, so I took a few more steps.
I did a registry clean, reactived my ActiveX controls. (I know, I know)
I installed it clean, and surprisingly enough, it loaded without a problem and I have played through it twice.
I honestly don't know which of any of the things I did, may of fixed the problem, but I am back to where I was with my computer before all this nonsense started eariler this year with Direct X.
Now, however, my visualizations inside Media Player 10 wont play, oh well, I will take it as a trade-off!

I've tried everything, reinstalled cod4, directx, video card drivers, and have done everything people have posted.

Since we have some people saying it is X-Fire and some saying it isnt I will clear things up here with a little information that any real IT professional would know, DirectX is used during the connection and the chatting sessions of X-Fire through its DirectPlay functionality so yes for some people it IS X-Fire causing the issue if they are using older system drivers for any portion of their configuration.
The fix is to download all the latest drivers for your system and install them, then install the latest update of DirectX and things should be cleared up. Buy a quality deticated graphics card and re-install the latest Direct-X and drivers for it.
Hopefully your CPU and MOBO are up to specs as well.

I had exactly the same situation as described by RussP on 22.12.08, eg. screen goes black when loading level where you enter the Reichstag in Berlin and I had to reboot...I have a Galaxy 9600gt (512mb), 450w psu, 1GB memory and WinXP OS. I updated the card driver and the BIOS and nothing worked. As a last resort I re-installed DirectX 9 and followed somebody else's advice suggesting to install an old card driver as the old ones are more stable than the latest ones and..magic! it now works and I am able to play the next level. So, my suggestion is: re-install DirextX 9 and install Nvidia driver ver. 175.19 (simply type the driver version in the search field of Nvidia website). It worked for me. Good luck!

I got this error so many times after trying to change my in-game settings.
I closed out xfire completely, and it actually worked instead of crashing and giving me that DX error.

I've been playing this game for about 2 weeks and after about a week I had to up date my video card From a NVIDIA 6600 to NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT.. This seems to have worked great until today.. At first it did not want to advance to the last Russan level were you enter the main building in Berlin.. It just stoped loading and shut down and returned me to my desk top. After fussing with a few settings now I get an DirectX Error message..

I've reinstalled My video card and up dated the drivers. Reinstalled the game + patch 1.1 ( but did keep the save games ). Installed the latest ver of Direct X " 9.0c"
Now it starts to load the level but gets a ways into it and the playback video starts stuttering and then crashes and goes to the desk top and displays the DirectX error message again.." DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error.

I also tried to load and run COD4 ( which I've had no prob. with ) and now it won't load or run??
I hope everyone is aware that X-Fire has nothing to do with DirectX. It is a chat app. to use when playing games on line. (I'm worried by the sound of that PC David. It sounds ancient. Use something such as Belarc to see what the PC has and compare those specs to what COD requires. If so try moving it to the desktop or somewhere temporary .

What worked for me, is I downloaded the latest video card driver from their (ATI) website.
-I was hesitant to do this since I thought I already had the latest ones, but apparently I didn't.

The answer, to your problems,is there.
Whatever your Graphics are, it will say "Yes" or "No"....to the use of it.
Secondly,double-check the System's Requirements...of the Game itself.
Does your System match what's there,or is better than it?
Is your System's the 'current' one ?

I can run any game I want on my 8600gts but still get random directx errors and get kicked... but otherwise run at stable 60+fps. This error comes up in CoD4 and HL2 mods (and probably more); and I get it maybe once every 10 hours of gaming, and sometimes 3+ times in an hour. It isn't the PSU either as I upgraded to a 500w and still get the errors as frequently. This error has been around for years yet it seems there never has been a solution...

Guys, there are over 300 forums about people with this problem, Im sorry to say but THIS IS A BUG. I was getting directX unrecoverable error when trying to play COD2 1.3patched.
I have tried few usual things(restart my pc, updating graphics drivers, reinstall cod2) - nothing fixed the problem, anytime I tried to change graphics setting of the game the error was there!!! I have even freshly installed operating system (xp pro) no positive results!!!
In the end I found this forum and read about turning of the Xfire so obviously I've tried it and to my surprise it WORKS AGAIN!!!!
Do u guys think there is a bug in the Xfire newest update???
