Can anyone help? My DVD won't play.

Wednesday, 05 September, 2007

I've got one of those new(ish) SATA DVD burners and it doesn't like reading certain movie DVDs I've got, yet it reads all the rest fine.

I'm using Nero ShowTime, but I was using PowerDVD as well, but neither worked for the few particular movies, which do work in other DVD drives.

Another strange thing comes to mind - just bought the three pack of Top Gear DVD's the other day, and they don't play with sound at all, yet the video works, and yet sound works for the intro.

Updated 5th September 2007

Rusty has written in with some more info. Thanks Rusty.

Well, 2 DVDs I've tried, that don't work, are The Jackal and Broken Arrow (both R4 and made by different studios). I'm tempted to just put the old IDE burner back in, and use this one in another system with an Intel SATA controller (this is currently running off a Gigabyte SATA2 port (6xSATA2 Intel used for 3xRAID0) and doesn't get detected as a Liteon drive when I run the firmware update - maybe I could/should have mentioned this before too).

Nero Info doesn't help as the disc isn't even detected when inserted - just says no disc detected.

Latest PC User DVD shows up as PC_User_OCT_07 dated 14 Aug 07 or something, so it works fine for that, and works on about 95% of the DVDs I've got here.

It's a SATA drive, so, as you know, there are 2 plugs, and only 1 way they can go, so it's installed properly in that respect, just that there's a communication breakdown somewhere for only a few movies.

It shows up in Device Manager as "SATA DVDRW LH-20A1S SCSI CdRom Device"

I hope some readers have some ideas to suggest Rusty.

Meanwhile, try eliminating causes.

  • You've tried two different players. Perhaps it would be worth uninstalling both of them and installing a third. Doesn't your operating system play DVD's anyway?
  • Is there something common about the disks that won't play? Are they perhaps all from a different region to the one you live in:? (That is, region 1 and you live in region 4.)
  • Is it only movies that don't play? What happens when you try a DVD data disk?
  • Do CD audio disks play okay?
  • Have you tried contacting the manufacturer for help?
  • Have you tried downloading the latest drivers, uninstalling the drive then reinstalling it with the new driver?
  • You could even try the drive in a friend's PC to see if it's the drive or your PC that's at fault.
  • Did you follow the installation instructions to the letter? There may be something that you've overlooked.

Please let us know how you get on.

Update

Thanks for that extra info Rusty. I'm sure some readers will now be able to come up with some suggestions for you. Meanwhile you could contact Gigagbyte and Liteon and ask if they have any ideas.

re: Can anyone help? My DVD won't play.
A SATA DVD 'burner'..how nice.
Maybe a 'good look'....at the BIOS 'set-up'...should work 'wonders!' for you, Rusty.
After all, it is SATA 'set-up' you're talking about here.

(Hint)
Is it (the SATA 'set-up'....configured for the RAID 'configuration'....or, does it give you the 'option'......for an IDE-type 'set-up' ?
I believe...by what you're saying...is that your computer's motherboard is either an oldish 'hybrid'....or a brand-new one.
Okay, which is it ?
Hybrid ?

You may have to install the SATA RAID drivers...for it to work properly.

New ?

You have to configure the BIOS.....so that the motherboard 'sees' that SATA DVD burner (in a new light)..as a IDE 'configured' one.
(read the Manual, of your computer's motherboard, more closely.....to figure it out !)
That's possibly the most probable cause.....behind the 'hit-n-miss' behaviour of your DVD burner.
Print this out, if need, to help with your problem.

re: Can anyone help? My DVD won't play.
Final update I think - anything else I can sort out myself.
Installed the SATA card and tried the firmware upgrade, worked, rebooted and tried Broken Arrow, and it finally played, so I'm happy that that part of it works. There's still the issue of the Top Gear DVD not playing with Nero, yet just tried and sound works with WMP11, just video is not good. Just tried with MPC and, aside from being very loud, it works perfectly fine.
So it seems that this DVD burner doesn't like any of my onboard chipset SATA ports (ones I tried were both SATA 1/2), but it likes the Sil3112 on a PCI card.

(Thanks for lettingn us know Rusty. -PZ)

re: Can anyone help? My DVD won't play.
Another update:
Tried in another PC (Linux, Intel SATA in auto mode - wouldn't POST in enhanced mode - Showed up as a Liteon) and same non-result. Just updated Gigabyte SATA2 controller, but neither DVD or firmware upgrade work still.
Firmware error = No Matched drive detected! This utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1S drive. Detected drives: 3-0-1-0 V:SATA LITE-ON DVDRW LH9L03.

I'll try it with a generic Sil3112 card I have here, and see whether it does anything, so I may have good news soon.

re: Can anyone help? My DVD won't play.
This probably wont help much as i hav`nt dabbled to much with SATA but also go to...CONTROL PANEL/ADMIN TOOLS/COMPUTER MANAGEMENT/DISK MANAGEMENT and you should find that drive there as well including what CD/DVD it is reading and what file system it see`s it as, eg (CDFS).
Also while there check REMOVABLE STORAGE.
Re check all your settings for the drive as well and how it is set to BOOT..eg (1stHD, 2ndROM).
And if your DRIVE came with a disk check it if it contains drivers relating to SATA and SCSI.
If both MOBO and PLAYER are newish i would suspect some form of driver issues considering some of the latest chipsets being implemented so keep an eye open for MOBO updated drivers for CHIPSET and SATA related issues.
All the best...Frank.

re: Can anyone help? My DVD won't play.
Since you have Nero, run the Nero Info Tool Kit to make sure the DVD player is seen properly and it is the correct region code and while the particular DVD is in there check the Disc Tab to see that it is read properly, and while your at it also check that the player is properly installed in your device manager.
Hopefully this might put some light on the problem.
Good Luck,.....Frank.

(Thanks Frank. -PZ)
