® Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?

Sunday, 04 May, 2008

Love the mag - Subscribed for years and couldn't change if I wanted to.

Do you know of any decent PC vendors in Perth? I'm trying to put a gaming rig together and can't believe how difficult is to find a vendor that owns a shop front that I can walk into and buy a whole
system from.

Its great from a price point of view that you may save a few dollars ordering it on-line and getting it delivered, but if I'm spending 3 grand, I want a receipt and a real person to talk to, not email or a voice on the phone.

After having contacted five vendors today I've been told in one flavour or another that I won't be able to get all the hardware in one shot from them because they don't have what I want in stock or its on order. (What happened to minimum stock re-order levels?)

I'm looking for:

  • AMD dual core 3800+ CPU
  • A good AMD SLI motherboard (Not too fussed)
  • nVidia 7800 GTX card
  • 1G RAM
  • 250G SATA HDD
  • A half decent case / keyboard / mouse
  • Dual layer DVD burner (Lite-on / Sony)
  • 17" 4 / 8 ms LCD screen

I'd say this falls into the PC gaming enthusiast bracket. Unfortunately, Perth doesn't.

I wish TI computers had an outlet here. Their deals look great.

Interesting question Philip. I think I know what you mean -- there's something about being able to browse the shelves and talk to the salesperson and make a decision on the spot. Something that's so much harder to do with an on-line store, despite the low cost of on-line stores..

I'm sure some readers will be able to make suggestions. In the meantime, take a look at

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
You really need to be assertive when communicating with any kind of sales-person; this does not mean aggressive at all.
Do your research, make carry-with-you notes;insist on face to face discussion in-shop with the person putting together the PC system you want, insist on seeing that system operating right there and then in the shop front environment.
There are some very good deals to be had when dealing with small businesses in comparison to department stores.

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
I have just finished building four PC towers since Jan 08 (Last PC 1 month ago. Two gaming PCs for my brother and nephew. The other 2 PCs were general purpose for my aunt.

All systems have Core 2 Duo CPUs, 3 GB RAM, mid range or high end GPUs, 500 or 1000 GB SATA HDD storage, a DVD RW Multi and a DVD ROM.
Two run on Vista Home Premium. The other two gaming PCs dual boot with Vista Ultimate and XP Pro. All windows are OEM (cheapest) media/COAs.

I purchased the components from Austin Computers, PLE Computers, MCG Technology, Navada Computers, NetSolution Computers and PC-R-US Computers. My main consideration was price (bang for buck), stock availability and a physical store front.

All up... I stuck to my and each end-users shopping list/agreed criteria. I did my price/stock research online then contacted the dealers by phone to verify stock availability and the advertised price.
So far so good...no problems...(Hopefully no returns...)

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
Right, we keep coming back to this post, and it's good because we get missed out over here in Perth. And it's good to keep checking because things change.

Computer shops in perth are becoming more frequent, and they are also getting BETTER! Frequent users of this forum would know I HATE Austin Computers, but after using Austin Computers in Joondalup through work I have a better feeling about them, although they still wouldn't make my top ten. Of course, I have never needed support through them, so I am only working on a hunch. Avoid the Osborne Park one like the plague though.

I live north of the river around the Joondalup area, so some shops like Trinix are good, but not good enough to make the effort to get out there (about a 30 minute trip with no traffic).

I build computers for myself and other people from time to time with only the BEST quality parts, as hardware is my passion. I am currently in the process of building one now, having spent about 20-30 hours designing the system and am now waiting on stock.

When I am looking at prices on the internet I open 6 computer websites at once and flick between them. The websites are:
- PLE Computers
- MCG Technology
- Vtech Industries
- Netplus
- Nintek (mainly to check their range, as prices are higher).

The best ones are Vtech and PLE, although I only bought from Vtech for the first time a few months ago for one item. Now looking at my websites you may be thinking I cant count to six, but I have left one out to emphasize this store.

The current computer I am building had 16 separate parts. Out of those parts, I ordered 10 from the sixth store, as EVERY part was cheaper than my five other stores! Out of the remaining six items, I am buying 4 through work as I get staff pricing, 1 from Netplus (I prefer to use Pioneer DVD burners, Lite-on second. Netplus had the best price for the DVR-215 and is on the way to the sixth store), and the last item (the ISS) can only be bought online (Webroot Antivirus with Antispyware and Firewall).

To find ALL the parts unbeaten on price from this one store was impressive to say the least! The best thing about this store, you get heavy discounts from buying online, but you have the piece of mind of a telephone option and shop front. The only thing left for me to mention is the name, and I've decided I'm not gonna tell ya! Bye!

HAHA! JUST KIDDING!

The store is FOXCOMP COMPUTERS.
www.foxcomp.com.au

And as the Dilmah man says "Do try it!"

I got a perfect gaming rig from NetPlus Computers in Perth The NetPro that I got was very good and I even asked for a proper gaming chip and not the integrated graphics and that costed around $1200 with a 19 inch LCD I think thats the best shop around, Except for the stupid guy at Cougar Computers who doesn't do the right thing and puts over inflated prices on his silly computers-Moral there don't buy computers From Cougar Computers

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
I'm going to be fierce on the, well, idiots posting here with information directly IGNORING the original poster's question..SHOPfront, NOT online, can you not read??

The whole point is that WHEN something goes wrong, you would find it easier to get help to rectify the problem in a timely manner. So, the question really is more about aftersales service, with sales helpfulness and price value coming after that.

If you dont have good references about them from friends, you can ask the tech guys to give you references re service standards.

Also, if im ordering a custom system, i will check on parts quality by later phoning the tech section and ask them which of 2 parts im considering fails more. You find out about the part, AND about the attitude of the techs.

So thanks to those who wrote about the aftersales, and warned about the slick and sensitive sales experience. Remember the salesman isnt the one who is going to be fixing it. It'll be the overworked geek out the back, because the owner is too tight to hire another technician to deal with the volume of product failures.

I bought a system from MCG Tech... still going after 3 years, but depending on backlog not always quick on service, had 3 parts fail, inc mobo and drive. Get this : they tried to sell me a warranty extension to 3 years, which i declined; when the drive failed after 24 months, i found that it could be replaced by a warranty still good on the part put there by the part manufacturer. This means they were selling me the same protection twice. BTW, MCG Tech and NetPLus Micro are two outlets owned by the same Big Guy behind the scenes. Each has its own manager, but the business system would be the same. Each tech is expected to build 12-15 systems A DAY if there is demand. Quality of work?

Oh yeah, and avoid COMDEK.

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
If you want value, shop around as many stores have specials.

I like PLE, they are very good.
Also MCG Technology on Wanneroo Rd. They have good specials and stock many high end parts.

Talk to the salesperson as many stores often give good discounts if you purchase multiple items (building a rig)

I mostly deal with:

Austin (austin.net.au)
YCS (ynot computer systems ynot.com.au)

Never really bought anything online though to do with computers. I always prefer having my parts THEN and THERE.
Whats the point of getting high end rigs in australia (perth) when the internet sucks so much that we cant play them online without lag - unless we pay heaps.

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
Been dealing happily with PLE for about 7 years. Always scout for better deals, almost always go back to PLE Wangara or Vic Park. Not so much rude as curt sometimes, but service good, stocks up to date and available, website well maintained, phone service efficient and proces unbeatable.

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
Having built my gaming/media centre system from the case up, ive driven all over perth and frequented almost every store mentioned in this thread.

Thumbs up: Net Solution Morley (lcd monitors, hard drive and ram), Storm Computers Welshpool (graphics card and case fans), Discount Computer Supplies Maylands (motherboard, hard drive and cpu), PLE Wangara (power supply, dvd burner) and Elcotronics Myaree (arctic cooling and fan contoller).

Thumbs down: Cash and carry leederville (overcharges on advertised prices), Austin osborne park (hard to get served or a car park and not a price tag in sight), Trinix welshpool (fail to stock what they advertise on their website), Arrow (over priced).

My top 2 for your needs would be Net Solution and Discount Computer Supplies.

Arrow computers in south Perth I had a fantastic experience with a sales person about 8 mths ago . Bought 2 machines with all the fruit for my business. I was very happy and recommended them to many of my customers.
Unfortunately my main board failed on the 1 computer that dose all my accounting, I have back ups but the programs cant be installed on other machines something called copyright. Thought arrow would understand and fix it fast for me, well 3 days later I took the machine back from them and had scream savers fix it, I called them about 10 am the bloke had a computer up and running on my desk about 7.30pm. Yes it cost me $700 but he fixed it. Arrow? maybe if you don■t need it to fast. Warranty? Service? Receipt? Sales man selling boxes ! Good luck

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
Funny...
Please Explain!!!

So far no one or their solution has mentioned Arrow Computers or Abacus here in WA!

As a mobile PC Tech, the most popular whitebox or generic towers/systems I come accross were built by Arrow followed by Abacus.
In fact going over my client records - 20% or 1 out of 5 whitebox systems - is built by Arrow. The clients all seemed to be happy about the build quality, support, etc.

Maybe its also Arrows pesky Perth TV adverts with that pathetic Bill Gates look-a-like. (I wish Microsft would chuck a lawsuit at him!)

Although, looking at the specifications Arrow provide for the money paid?! I feel there are better bargains to be found in Perth.

Personally, from clients I have received mixed reviews about Austin, Netplus Micro, Navada, PLE, Storm, Trinix, NetSolution, MCG Technology, et al. Take your pick and cross your fingers!

On the brand side... I come accross mostly HP Pavilions followed not too distantly by Acer and Compaq. Then the odd Dell, IBM/Lenovo, Packard Bell, etc. So these brands are alright... well depends on the individual clients experience...Some have experienced orgasm but many have OUCH..

It seems that most whitebox builders here in Perth are very attentive and treacle touchy (Feel that love...) when selling a system and extracting your cash...

2007 isnt too late for them to instil some lovin into their after sales service and support...
BUYER BEWARE...

Try Ebay!, there is plenty of ebay stores that sell good gear with warranty and reciept given. I bought my father a PC just after christmas with unreal specs:
E6700 Core 2 Duo
320Gb Hard drive
GeForce 7950 GT 512Mb PCI-E
2GB of DDR2 RAM
18x Lite-on DVD Burner
All this for only $1850!!!
Then i Purchased him a ASUS 22" 2ms Widescreen LCD monitor for $500
This setup all up cost under $2500 and plays all the latest games in the highest of detail settings at 1680x1050 resolution perfectly.
All with 3years warranty.

Give .....www.comtrader.com.au....a try.
Not sure if there's a Western Australian 'version......but, certain you can find a store close to you (where-ever you may be)...that offer 'very reasonable prices'...for anything you are after.
Phillip's 'specs' (for the computer he is trying to build)....is very very close.... to one I just built 2 days ago.
And I used the Computer Trader magazine.....to justify the prices I paid, at the computer-store I went, for the parts I was after.
My parts/costs..for my computer........
ASUS M2A-VM AM@ (motherboard w/256Mb 'on-board Video')....$122.73
Case (tower).....$62.73
RAM(Kingtosn)DDR2 667MHz (1GB)....$80.91
Lite-on DVD-Rom.........$45.45
Lite-on DVD +/_ burner.....$31.82
OEM XP(SP2)................$89.00

TOTAL................approx.=$467

I saw this email thread and the excellent responses. All were posted about 12 months back and sure the original query has been resolved.
Ironically I am facing the same issue and woudl like to hear from users / techys if the status of good computer shops has changed. From the communication thread it appears most people preferred Net Plus, PLE at large and few others. What about DELL - no one commented. Austin has been shown a mixed response. I bought my lap top from Dell but I do nto like their pushing the price to buy in next three days business.

Any way if some one still reading this mail and please advise if NETSOLUTION and PLE computers still the best ones to buy desk top machines ?

I've bought components from

PLE
Netplus
Storm
Austin

They all have nice web sites and good stores and at least one of them will be cheap on any particular item.

However, I've only ever bought a complete system from Netplus and liked their custom PC builder available on their website.

PC-R-US best service by miles compare to ple and austin and the prices are on part with the cheapest in town.

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
I have predominantly used PLE now since the days they were known as Brother Office Machines in East Perth (late 1980's) to the current day. Peter (Peter Lingley) has always provided excellent service at excellent prices and I have no worries recommending them whatsoever. I have found Netplus in Osborne Park to offer good prices. MCG Technology do have good prices and do knock up some pretty good systems at reasonable prices BUT heaven help you if you have warranty concerns as refunds are very hard to come by.

Overall I would stick with PLE who offer good over the counter service and good online service as well. From memory delivery within the metro area of Perth is free as well on most orders and arrives next day which is darned good service.

I know people may accuse me of being overly cynical and suspicious, but "Rev. Hmmm ;-)

One word of warning about RTV. I bought a top spec system RTV; the hard drive had bad sectors after 6 months. After they checked that it was faulty I paid $100 extra for another drive (upgraded as the drive wasn't made anymore). 7 months later the new drive started making dry bearing noises. RTV said do a drive fitness test- drive failed. RTV refused to do anything. I had to send the drive to Singapore (RMA). After over 10 weeks of constant communication with support staff I still didn't have a new drive. UPS investigations contacted me another 3 weeks later infering that I already had the drive (someone had signed for it). Told investigator he had 5 working days to find drive and charge the culprit or my lawyer would handling all communications. 5 days later investigator told me the 'no one home delivery note' was put in the wrong letter box. Consequently, the person from that address redirected the delivery to their work where an unknown person signed for the drive. No one was charged (incl neighbour). I forwarded all this information to Singapore (IBM). Another 2 weeks later I received a REFURBISHED drive (second hand). Over 3 months without a drive, only to receive a used serviced drive. without an opology.

Hi Philip,

Look, you don't know me and I don't know you. But from a tech's perspective who is a customer first and foremost, the BEST computer shop I have found in Perth seems to be PLE. I haven't been to all of them, but I've been to a few. PLE is the only place I feel comfortable walking into. I have been with them for about 8 years now and I have recommeded HUNDREDS of people to them.

But the best advice I can give is to give Austin Computers a miss.

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
Online retailers generally don't hold stock. They order the stock each evening, collect it in the morning and post it out.

If you're buying from an online retailer, find out how the returns work, do they have a workshop to test things or do they do it on their mum's kitchen table?

If you're planning on dropping $10 off the price when you call the next retailer, don't bother. Internal components have $5 to $10 markup on them. Monitors, Keyboards, mice, etc. have $1-$3. No, I'm not joking.

You'll probably find that the retailer says they can't match it becase they are paying more than that for it.

Find a respectable computer shop and buy all your parts from them. Preferably as a system, not parts. It costs surprisingly little to have it built as a system and you don't have warranty problems then.

If you pay a few more dollars to get the computer from a respectable retailer then you're better off as you're going to get support.

If you bought parts from all over the place, each shop makes $5 and none of them are going to give you support.

Avoid anyone that is meant to be a wholesaler. Wholesalers are there to supply the computer industry, not end users.

When they start selling retail it is usually becuase they are about to shut down and need to get rid of their stock. What happens to your warranty you ask? YOu don't have one.

Wholesalers also have different laws in regards to the return/repair of faulty goods. They don't have to give your money back, you can wait for 6 months to get something fixed, retailers have harder laws to give better customer service.

Wholesalers don't offer technical support, they don't have someone you can talk to. You have to build it yourself and if you blow something up, your problem.

PLE are very well know for their prices and have quite a queue on a Saturday. I beleive that their customer service isn't too bad also.

Good computer shops will generally stick to a few brands rather than sell whatever is going so they may not stock what you want. For example we refused to sell non-intel CPUs (mainly to do with the customers rather than the CPU) a few years ago.

A good computer shop will be able to get you what you want though. Remember they are the experts with the experience, if they tell you that a brand is rubbish, listen, they are the ones processing the returns!

re: ■ Help: Who are the good PC dealers in Perth?
Austin and PLE are really good. I put together a somewhat enthusiast PC (nowhere near the level you are going - I think SLI is pointless and worse... a waste of money for little to no gain) and yes getting the parts was a bit of a pain but if you can handle waiting a few days either of those shops will order components in for you.

Both are quite good system builders so you aren't going to lose out by going to one over the other.

Seeing as you are looking at getting a 7800 GTX I would consider waiting a little while until ATI unleashes the "GTX Killer" and you could possibly save yourself some money when the good old knee-jerk Nvidia reaction happens (price drops).

I have just today ordered a machine with similar specs to one you are after from MCG Technology in Westminister - not far from Noranda. They have a good selection online, competitively priced, and you can go and talk to them at their shop. http://www.mcgtech.com.au/

Hi Philip,

Try www.nintek.com.au - Perth-based retailer.

One of the owners, Nin, is an old friend of mine who has built this business up over the last 4-5 years. He is a true PC enthusiast who I'm sure will provide the service you deserve.

Regards,

Craig Watson

You might want to look at Nintek (www.nintek.com.au) if you're into the enthusiast side of computer hardware. They may be online only, but their package deals are very tempting and they have a good reputation amongst overclockers.

Otherwise, I look into Austin, Netplus and PLE for the rest of my hardware.

Hi Phillip,

You could try some of these. I don't know if they carry the items you want in stock but I guess you could try.

http://www.netplus.com.au/index.html
http://www.ple.com.au/

I suspect you're adopting a rather unwise approach however. Shopping for components online is a very safe thing to do if you stick to using reputable online vendors, and I wouldn't consider buying components from shopfront any more. Stores simply aren't able to carry the range that online vendors can offer. That becomes particularly important when you move over into the 'enthusiast' area, and I'm afraid that Eastern States vendors are generally the place to locate the items you want. Sydney and Melbourne are primarily the places where you find vendors who carry large catalogues of stock items.

In my opinion, a face to talk at and a receipt that's printed out on their printer rather than yours is not adequate compensation for having to settle for components other than the ones you want!
