How can you reset the ink level counter on a Canon Pixma MP500 printer?
(Originally posted Jine 2006)

Technical documentation and discussion amongst user groups which I’ve consulted suggests that you can’t actually reset the ink level counter for that particular printer. The best suggestion I’ve come across to cope with the problem of ink refills is to actually disable the ink level counter on the MP500.
When you insert a refilled ink cartridge into your Pixma MP500 printer you should get a warning about the refilled cartridge. You should also be prompted, asking if you wish to disable ink level detecting. Agree to do so, and you won’t get the warnings again because the ink levels won’t be monitored by the printer.
(Do you know the best place for advice on this sort of thing? The companies that sell refilled cartridges and refill kits. If they sell you the refills they should be able to help with using them. -Paul Zucker)

Ron BloomPosted: 13/06/2008 re: How do I reset the ink level? I have imported a refill kit which will refill the PGI-5 and all the CLI-8 cartridges and a resetter will reset all chips to full. Price is just AUS$80 but will refill each cartridge 3 times and the resetter is yours to keep. Costs less than the price of a set of new cartridges Dean MichaelPosted: 10/05/2008 This way If you purchase a set of our CLI-8/PGI-5 chip extenders you will NEVER have to worry about changing chips or ink levels ever again. They are $25 set and $5 postage Australia wide. Check them out at: www.inkhub.com.au OR simply type in the words "Ink Hub" at yahoo or Google

many thks MarcusPosted: 08/11/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? Ok everyone ... i analyzed the signals from CLI8bk, PGI5bk, CLi8y, CLI8m and CLI8c while the printer was working ... they are on a serial line and the signals aren't digital serial signals like i seen before ... and the chips aren't actualy flash memories like EPSON ... they are some kind of PROM's ... i wired a rezistor betwen the Ground from the chip(the biger contact from 4 on the chip)and the printers ground to limit the amount of current the chip gets therefor the chip can be read but when the printer tries to write to it it has not enofh power P=I*V because it has not enofh current to burn out the fuses .... the ink level hasen't dropt anymore for some time .... i'm not shore if it's failsafe but it helps anyway .... BlaisePosted: 30/10/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? From a refiller...
If you encounter a blinking amber light after installing the refilled cartridge(s) into the printer:
For iP Series Printers: Hold the PAPER FEED button down for 5-8 seconds. The cartridge will print. ** However the ink level display may not show.
For MP Series Printers: Hold the STOP/RESET button down for 5-8 seconds. The cartridge will print. ** However the ink level display may not show.
** As the ink level is not displayed and warnings won't occur, you need to keep an eye on the ink levels (new printheads are very expensive). I work on the premise that you need to check when the printout doesn't look right. i.e. If a colour is missing, the print "scratchy" or faded. At this point open the printer lid and check the cartridge levels by eye.

(Thanks Blaise. -PZ) Toby SodorPosted: 09/10/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? I see Printzone has a set of 5 genuine Canon inks (the 4 x cli8 and extra no. 5 black) for just over $100. Much better than the $27.50 each I was paying. By the way, I used refills a couple of times, but when I re-installed genuine Canon the printer knew, and started measuring the ink levels again. AlmaPosted: 29/09/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? As mentioned above, are you able to disable the ink level detection on a Cana PIXMA ip4200, or not? And if so, will this damage the printer in any way in the future, or not?
Vlas Alexandru (Romania)Posted: 19/09/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? Man personal i think that canon are very rude with their printers. I bought a couple of years ago a PIXMA 4200 and since then i printed over 5000 pages using of course refilled catriges (i've got one liter of ink for about 50 $), but one day the printhead "died". While i was searching for a printhead i found out that it costs 150$... a lot of money. And in one IT shop there it was... A printer identical with mine. And i bought it... for about 120$... Pretty cool no? 5 cartriges and a printhead for only 125$. I went home, i replaced my old printhead and went back to the store telling the seller that the printhead was f***ed up... They gave me another printer... Yupee I actually bought 2 printers at a price of 1 :)).
As for the cartiges... In my experience the printer does not memorize them, it actually counter the amount of ink that came out through the nozzels and writes them into the chip on the cartrige. So the only way to reset them is either make a software which using the printer to "refill" the catriges, or actually remove the chips and reprogram them outside the printer. Either way, i can't do it, i don't know anything about programming or software but if anyone succeds please give me a mail.
Best wishes... and don't let theese bastards ro rob you... Refill your inktanks ;)
(You say "don't let them rob you"? What do you think YOU did to that shop? -PZ) AlanPosted: 28/06/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? Hi,
I've read somewhere that when printers using "chipped" Canon cartridges are in use, either the printer or the software keeps track of how many pages have passed beneath a cartridge. When this gets to too large a value some dialogue boxes pop up offering alternatives. One of these is to disable inklevel monitoring and perhaps void the warranty.
A separate problem to getting the "empty tank" flag set on the chip.
I wonder if every cartidge is tagged with a unique number that gets memorised long term? If not then the following work around might be a solution.
1. Get a new canon cartidge. (If you buy the cheapest version of the Canon range with the same print engine you will get a full set of cartidges and a replacement printhead for far less than the parts individually.)
2. Monitor the cartridge ink levels via the on screen window, and before the "empty" flag gets set replace the cartridge.
3. You now have a cartridge you can refill and which does not have its flag set.
4. When you reuse this cartridge it will have level monitoring available and providing its identity is not memorised by the printer or the software will look like a genuine replacement cartidge. It depends on how clever Canon have been but I'm guessing that the installation of a new genuine cartridge will over-write any data in the printer flash memory or driver software. If so then this will occur when the original, now refilled cartridge is fitted.
My use of a printer is not so great that I will be trying this out soon, but I'll be giving it a go in due course. Possibly after warranty is no longer an issue. CPUKPosted: 26/05/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? (Mr MPosted: 16/03/2007

I've disabled the messages for empty cartridges, but after refilling a number of times the printer finally disables the chip on the cartridge all together. It then refuses to recognise it or print until replaced with a new genuine Canon cartridge (with a new chip).
I can take the chip off the new cartridge and put it on the previously rejected ones and the printer now accepts them and works fine (also reactivates level moitoring).
This, unfortunately, is Canons way of eventually forcing you to buy their premium priced units. chrisPosted: 23/03/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? Thanks for the above, I spent $140.00 on ink for my MP600 and it worked for a while, but then refused to, I was 'annoyed'!
I saw the 'press reset/stop for 5 seconds', presto, but of course I will need to watch the ink levels my self! paul welterPosted: 22/03/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? i have a pixma mp 800,i refill only the 2 black ink tanks, doing the others is too much bother, try take off the chip of the cartridge is not an option the thing is stuck fast and i think you could ruin it, as for advice, no one knows,us that own these things are stuck with it, a shame its a good machine but next time Canon printers will not be on my shopping list, when the ink starts to cost $ 26 and upwards its time to consider is it worth it ? in future a laser is worth thinking about.
as far as asking ink companies how to over come these problems ,its a bit like fitting fly screens to a submarine.
regards to all paul welter helenPosted: 18/03/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? hi, do what the other posts do, i did and it works but only if you refill it yourself or get someone like cartridge dynamics to refill for you its about 12.00 a refill. i made the mistake of buying calidid refills and removing the chip from my own original cartridges (which they said would work) and lost my money on these cartridges but the professional refills do work you just have to disable the printer and you know when you need more ink the document fades. cheers ChrisPosted: 17/03/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? Well, I dont have a solution but I've certainly had nothing but trouble with my MP500 since I bought it a couple of months ago. It seems to have a mind of it's own with messages indicating that "more than one inktank of the same type are installed" "use only one inktank per color" Additionaly it tells me that my inktanks are empty when visual inspection indicates otherwise. All this with original ink cartridges!! I wonder what the effect would be if i used generics??
(Hi Chris. From what you're saying you have a faulty printer and should get a replacement under warranty. Better to do it now than tru to do it after the warranty period has expired. -PZ) Mr MPosted: 16/03/2007 re: How do I reset the ink level? All new canon chips CAN NOT be reset but the printer will still print as normal. If you refill your cartridges you will not lose your warrenty and canon will still help you out.
New canons with fax (CLI-8 and PGI-5 cartridge) have had problems as to print out a fax you need ink even thou you have refilled the cartridge the printer thinks the cartridges are empty and the fax will stay in memory.
I have been buying my ink from www.easyrefills.com.au ( Brisbane )
and they have been very helpfull with all new canons.

So if something happens to the printer while it still under warranty and you try and get the printer fixed, the techie will know what you've done and void the warranty?
(It could well be, Lou. But I don't know that for sure. -Paul Zucker) Peter Posted: 15/10/2006 re: How do I reset the ink level? The ink cartridges have a micro-chip in them that resets the counter when inserted. when you use a non genuine cartidge you have to take the chip out of the genuine one and put it into the non-genuine one. The counter will not work anymore because it will still tell the printer it's empty. from it's previous use JimCPosted: 17/06/2006 re: How do I reset the ink level? My problem is not the counter, I haven't got to the stage where I have that problem, yet. My problem revolves around the availability of third party ink cartridges or even just ink, for that fact. I've just replaced all of my colour cartridges with new CANON ones at around $28.00 each and in the not too distant future, my black cartridges too! All for the total cost of a cheap printer!

I had the same problem with my ip5200 Canon.I refill with a kit supplied by Ink Bank www.inkank.com.au Their website has a lot of info on resetting various printers but little can be done with Canon. But if you follow their advice you wont go wrong LeighPosted: 15/06/2006 re: How do I reset the ink level? The only problem with your suggestion, Paul, is I have yet to see any of the major players offering refills for the MP500. I'm looking at Calidad and Pelikan, here. If you know of one, I'd like to know about it, and also how good they are. With my S400, Calidad have been very good, but now, with an MP500, I have yet to find one and our local store (rural area) has yet to be advised of an alternative to CANON, nor has Hardly Normal when I visit the "big smoke".
(I assume that if you want to reset the counter, that means you're using refilled cartridges. Even if you're refilling your own, why not ask the ink supplier for advice? -Paul Zucker)
