Which notebook is best for me?
Thursday, 20 July, 2006
I want to buy a notebook with the following attributes. Which one is best?
- Very fast processor (almost bleeding edge)
- Large hard disk, or preferably two. Say 400G. (I'll be saving and editing large video files)
- SD and HD digital TV tuner and inputs from Foxtel Digital box
- Remote keyboard with joystick
- DVI output for my 42" plasma screen
- Digital audio output for my Pioneer HiFi receiver
- Firewire and USB2 inputs
- Windows Media Center operating system.
- Top end graphics
- 2G of RAM
- Networking
- Not too worried about tire screen as it will be used with the plasma
- Cool running as it will probably be left on 24x7, and with the screen closed
In short, a media center PC to go in the home theatre room.
Martin Prosser, ,
While you could do a lot of what you want with a notebook, surely what you're describing is a desktop PC.
It would be a lot cheaper, a lot easier to maintain and a lot more flexible. And if appearance is important to you, get it in a home theatre case. A lot of the things you've asked for simply won't fit in a notebook. And since you're obviously going to wire it into a specific place, why get a portable PC?
There are a couple of brands of Media Center Notebook (such as Toshiba) but WHY?
I'd also suggest that whatever you buy should also be Windows Vista ready. You might even be better off waiting until Vista is on sale. Paul Zucker

(I think most people agree that you'll never get what you want in a notebook. For gaming get a desktop. -PZ) ashPosted: 14/11/2007 re: Which notebook is best for me? Buy a iMac or PowerBook from apple. The new OS will be a bonus plus u will get a remote as well. Apple TV is great. Peter JohnsPosted: 25/09/2007 re: Which notebook is best for me? naylin.laser@gmail.com Stuart F.Posted: 22/07/2006 re: Which notebook is best for me? i recommend looking at alienware or the dell xps range of laptops these are the best of the best (xps 2010 if you want the best of the best but you will need to sacrifice alot of weight because it isn't a lightweight.) AdrianPosted: 22/07/2006 re: Which notebook is best for me? Hey Martin,
If you want to customize a notebook with all your needs, go to http://www.pioneercomputers.com.au and you should be able to get most of the features internally built into the notebook you choose.
Althouh some of your requirements are a bit over estimated for a notebook, since the maximum at current are two 120GB HDD's internally which no way reaches your 400GB requirement.
So if you really want all these great features in a reasonably good price margin, you would be way better off buying yourself a desktop media center PC which would look much more attractive than a notebook with heaps of external accesories.
Remember like everyone has already told you here, just get a desktop unless you really need the portability that a desktop won't offer. MattPosted: 22/07/2006 re: Which notebook is best for me? Can't get over this one, he's clearly in need of a small form factor/media centre pc. You could make a laptop with these specs if you wanted to spend that much, but you'd have external devices and cables making it look terible.
Just don't get how this guy gets so much money for this stuff when he is so lacking in common sence?
Guess he must be in management or admin somewhere. mePosted: 21/07/2006 re: Which notebook is best for me? i agree with "i want........." andrew peter collinsPosted: 21/07/2006 re: Which notebook is best for me? with the specs you say you want you better buy a small generator to power it BUT how you will get it into an aircraft on your way to a business meeting interstate? cheers Andy :) :) willPosted: 21/07/2006 re: Which notebook is best for me? paul is correct I want an XPS M2010 or Qosmio G30 on my desk...Posted: 21/07/2006 re: Which notebook is best for me? Interesting how the question began with finding a notebook, and ended as a media center 'PC', he solved his own question.
