Is there a way to set up AdAware?

How do I set AdAware up? Is it best to use the settings that are in place when the program is installed?

 What a good question!
Installed at its default settings, AdAware will do quite a good job, but it can certainly be made to do a better one. Here’s how:
Update your version of AdAware. Download the most recent version, uninstall your existing version, then install the new one. Start it up, and before using it on your system, update the ‘reference files’ by using the bottom right button in the program, which is denoted "Check for Updates".
With AdAware running, click on the Gear icon at the top of the start screen. (If you hover over it with the mouse pointer, you will see it is for ‘ Settings’.) Make the following changes:
’Scanning’ button.
- Select "Scan within Archives".
- Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
- Select all options in the ‘Memory and Registry’ section.
‘Advanced’ button.
- Select all options for "Log-file detail"
‘Tweaks’ button.
- Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
- "Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile"
- "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
- Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
- "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
- Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.
Finally, before you perform a Scan with AdAware, make sure that you enable the option for "IN-DEPTH scanning". That’s it! AdAware will now do a more thorough job for you, and also generate more detailed log files which will prove helpful if you run into problems after removing identified objects from your system.
Don’t forget to check for updated Reference files before you scan with AdAware, and most importantly of all, don’t forget to use the program regularly!

jeffPosted: 31/05/2006 re: Is there a way to set up AdAware? Ad-Aware, in it's 'default' setting works just fine for me.
but, here is a Tip,DELETE all cookies,first....along with using SpyBot.Search-n-Destroy.
When it has completed a Full sweep of your computer, and, shows yours has BOTH NEW Critical Objects/
Negilible Objects.....Right Click on each (in turn)and SELECT ALL OBJECTS.
All Objects will be automatically placed into an Archieve File.
Then, click NEXT.
The Scan process should show that there is a File in Open Quarantine, now.
Highlight it.
The next window should show you that there is now a DELETE option....click it.....that Archieve will be removed.
Your system should now be clean as a whistle.
And,please, get into the habit of doing these 'checks' every time you leave the Internet?
You will have less hassles, that way, with 'bad cookies' bugging your system, and it should run a whole lot smoother too,if you get into this habit.

You may need to update your response to include Ad-Aware SE which, I believe, is now the Current version of Ad-Aware
e.g. "Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile"
is not under "Scanning Engine" but under "Log File"
and your scan options have changed to "Smart". "Full", "Custom" and "within ADS"
(Thanks Leigh. I'll get Terry to do it when he's back from Camp O'Shanassy. Inn the meantime, you've alerted readers. Thanks. -Paul Zucker) cannymumPosted: 21/12/2004 re: Is there a way to set up AdAware? I would like to add....that because the new Ad-Aware SE finds many more "targets"....there can be problems in trying to Quarantine all at once.
Someone using Ad-Aware SE for the first time, may find a huge number of targets.
I know I am not explaining this properly....but....when Ad-Aware finds 200+ items )especially on an older system)...trying to remove all at the same time, can confuse the PC. Especially if 150 of those are Registry items.
We recommend removal of unwanted items in batches of about 50. Reboot between scans.
Once the system is clean....then normal scan/removal is ok.
Hope this is of some help.
(Thanks Judy. Good tip. -Paul Zucker)
