How to unlock a Blue DVD

Sunday, 07 February, 2010

I rented a DVD yesterday. "UP".

It's Blueray and my DVD player won't play it.

How do I unlock it?

Hilly , , Australia

You can't unlock either the DVD player or the Blu-Ray disc.

Although the discs are the same to look at, they simply aren't compatible.

Yes, Blu-Ray players will play older DVD discs but it doesn't work the other way around.

I'm sure that if you explain your mistake to them DVD store they'll re-rent the DVD version at no extra cost. It must happen all the time.

Another thing to take into account is that if you have Region 1 DVDs, make sure your new Blu-ray player will play all region 1 DVDs that you have. My new sony Blu-Ray does all that BUT it wont play Region 1 Blu-ray discs....yet. Didn't we go through all this crap with multizoning problems years ago. Time to take my player to a "friend" so i can play all Blue-Ray discs from any part of the world. Cheers Andy.
