Safely remove the icon?
Monday, 21 August, 2006
The ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ icon shows up in my system tray and it’s really annoying me. I don’t use external drives and I don’t understand why it’s even there. I set it to ‘Always Hide’ the icon but when I click on the arrow to show the other icons it’s still there!
How do I get rid of this nuisance?
Thanks,
Harry , , Australia
You sure you’re not going a tiny tad overboard with that frustration there, Bazza? The ‘Safely Remove’ icon is there because you have SATA hard drives installed. The SATA standard has been developed with ‘hot-swappable’ capability in mind, so your hard drives show up the same way as external ones even though they’re actually fitted internally!
If you just can’t live with the knowledge that the icon is there, even though it’s ‘hidden’, there are two options I can offer you to choose from:
- Get rid of your SATA hard drives and fit IDE hard drives instead.
- Download, install and use the ‘Icon Remover’ tool. It's designed to address the very frustration you’re suffering from.
I suspect that there's a registry edit you could perform to do the job, but if there is I’m afraid I don’t know it.

EveryonePosted: 04/03/2007 re: Safely remove the icon? Everyone missed the point... this
is *NOT* a removable drive...
this is *NOT* a USB drive...
this is *NOT* an external drive.
It's my permanent, C:, internal,
fixed, non-removable drive connected to my motherboard...
forever. I will *NEVER* be "ejecting it" for any reason.
Is that clearer????
Sheezesss...
(So take it up with Micr4osoft. -PZ)

Yes, as Mike says you can right click the item to eject.
In case you do remove the icon you can do this from My Computer > right click on the flashdrive in question > eject > and you can see the name of the flash drive (e.g ROLF 128MB) change to "removable disk (E:)". That means you can now pull it out safely.

Are you one of the Grab n Go crowd? when you use a USB device, you just snatch it out of the USB port without stopping it correctly?
The Icon is there for that job.
Click it, choose the USB device to halt, click that and confirm and the device should stop or you'll recieve a message telling you that it can't be stopped and to try later.
On some devices you can Right click and choose Eject which will fire the Safely remove hardware button.
