Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice?
Friday, 23 April, 2004
I'm looking for a information on the Toshiba Satellite M30 notebook.
Can you tell me what they're like & how they perform.
Gordon Kelly, Sunbury, VIC
 Yes, I can.
HelpStation’s Darren Yates reviewed the Toshiba Satellite in the March 2004 edition of PC User magazine, giving it a score of 7/10.
With Mobile Centrino technology, a PentiumM 1.6 GHz processor, 512M of RAM, and a 60G hard drive, the M30 would be a reasonable system for software applications use. Darren’s score has been marked down compared to the scores of some of its rivals as a result of its shorter battery life and heavier overall weight than rivals, because its performance is a tad slow and comparable to some PentiumM 1.4 GHz rivals, and because it is a tad pricey.
The performance slowdown could result, as Matt Overington has indicated at APC magazine from the bundled, pre-installed software that Toshiba has included with the machine, so uninstalling those and using your own software may have a beneficial effect on performance. Matt has also pointed out that the keyboard is a bit off-centre, and may prove a bit uncomfortable and difficult to get used to.
I’d also like to add the comment that the GeForce FX Go5200 graphics controller included in the M30, while a much better option than onboard graphics, is still by no means a Gaming ‘beast’. It would be suitable for casual and less demanding gaming, but don’t expect any heavy ‘Far Cry’ action on this notebook!
If you’d like to have a more in-depth look at the strengths and shortcomings of the M30, you could have a look at the extended review of the machine conducted by Adrian Wong at Adrian’s Rojakpot. Better known for his excellent BIOS Optimization Guide Adrian’s occasional product reviews are comprehensive and easy to read, so you’re in luck. He’s been especially critical of the slow, 4,200 rpm hard drive included in the system, and that may explain some of the performance issues which have been noted by others.
So there you go, Gordon. I can’t give you any ‘hands-on’ tidbits, as I’ve not had any ‘hands-on’ time with one of these, but it seems that everywhere I’ve looked for information about the M30, there’s been little, niggly issues getting reported!
Cheers, Terry O'Shanassy

Anurag KumarPosted: 08/02/2009 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? Hi,
i was a very satisfied user of the M30A until a few months back when my laptop model PSM30A-7101E started becoming very very slow... after a very good 4 years of use !!
The DVD Multi Writer drive now only works as a CD drive and does not recognize any DVD's like Luiz Gamboa !!
I suspect this has happened after an online upgrade to Windows XP SP-3 was done.
Does any one of you have a similar experience ? If yes, what was the solution done ?
Would also like to know your experience of RAM upgrade from 512 MB (pre-installed). What new RAM size will help for typical home use ?
Thanks in advance. ZACPosted: 22/12/2008 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I want to replace the hard drive in my M30, can anyone tell me where I can get one.

In reply to Kurt's question re memory, it will take 2 x 1Gb DDR400 Sodimm (this memory is downwardly compatible for the M30 - Mine is the PSM30A-7101E [harman/kardon] model.
I'm currently trying to find out what is the largest Hard Drive the BIOS will recognise - does anyone know ? - The original spec suggested 80GB and I would like to put a 160GB drive in it.
Oh yes, it is a good choice even in 2008 and it works well with the extra memory, now 2GB, in it.
When I get around to it, I might look for a faster DVD-RW for it, it still has the original which is a bit slow.
Anyone have a spare copy of the original CD's for it (Recovery and Drivers) I need a copy as I lost mine.
gillbatesPosted: 23/10/2008 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? 2008 is almost over, and this laptop is still going strong. I've had it for about 5 years. I can easily run apache2.0, php5.2.6, mysql5.0 and zend studio on it all at the same time. It freezes sometimes when browsing the web with the latest version of firefox though, and I can't open a 11mb jpg I need for work in photoshop. Probably need more ram.
So far the only things that have failed are the hard drive and the battery. All easy fixes - I swapped out the hard drive myself, and had the battery repacked for Php2,400 (around $49). KurtPosted: 17/09/2008 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I got mine now for 4 years and I'm still very satisfied. Most of the time I'm running graphic programs.
Now for the first time it crashed on me. I think I need to put in more working memory.
Does anybody know which memory of 1GB or (2X1GB) I need to buy for this M30?
Thanks for your help.

Would somebody who has replied to this query may still have a motherboard for the Toshiba Satellite M30 which is not needed any longer.
Any help much appreciated!

Tina rishiPosted: 03/11/2007 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? Not at all. The battery and the power adpater are dead just after my ******** warranty expired.
And just about a while back, the laptop died on me. I've tried hard enough to revive it, but it doesn't look like this baby will ever live again.
Never buy any Toshiba machine. Perit HakuzPosted: 06/10/2007 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? It was good until problems started:
1- Hard drive failed suddenly (was replaced)
2- Hing broke (was replaced)
3- Graphic card burned (need motherboard replacement - just as the warrenty ended)
4- DVD stoped working properly.
5- OVER HEATING, may be they made it for the cold winter in Canada!!!!
If you plan to buy it .... buy the extend warrenty plan with it .... you will need it! petzyPosted: 27/09/2007 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? it really depends on what you're looking for.
pros:
1.beautiful screen
2.great sound system comparing to other laptops
so 1 and 2 combined: great for movie, music, and game (as a laptop)
problems:
-heating is a major problem
-heavy
-lots of bundled softwares that you should get rid of
-I don't know about the price now but it was expensive in 2004.
-battery has died, it can only work for
In general, it's an elegant machine. I had to change the HDD because it crashed down (too much emule and BT) and now I plan to upgrade its memory.
I have had it for 3 years and I plan to use it for another couple of years. JessPosted: 10/04/2007 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I haven't had a single problem with my Satellite M30 - and I've had it for the past 3 years or so. Never had to fix or replace anything and its worked perfectly - very happy. Marilyn ZannetouPosted: 09/03/2007 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? no it is not.. my hard drive crached, now my screen within two years that i have it.. DONT BUY IT!! Luiz GamboaPosted: 26/02/2007 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? No!
I bought my M30 two years ago with Windows XP Home Eddition. After Microsoft have released SP2 ( Service Pack 2)my DVD drive can't read nor write DVD disk. He can't read even the DVD disk that he wrote before. I triyed everything but it still not working. But he reads and writes any CD disk.
Like me there are many people with the same probleme. There are no firmware to help upgrade the Toshiba SD-R6112 version 1332 drive.
So take care. Karen TonkinPosted: 09/12/2006 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? PS. Victor:
My DVD was and is excellent!
Karen TonkinPosted: 09/12/2006 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I have a Toshiba Satellite M30 and the modem and sd card work perfectly!
It is an EXCELLENT machine as was the Toshiba Satellite 2610!
Experience assures me that this machine is worth more than a 7/10! It gets 10/10 as it should!
michele sticcaPosted: 28/09/2006 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I DON"T want to know Greg DebickiPosted: 02/02/2006 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I bought my M30 in september 2004. Its a m30-ysj, thats the canadian special edition model, a similar version has prolly already been released in the states. I absolutely love this laptop even though i have had a few, some big, problems with it.
First of all, the screen is a beauty, nothing beats the glassy widescreen wxga display for watching movies. Games look nice too although they get stretched due to the widescreen. The only problem i've had with the screen is that when the laptop is closed the screen rubs against the keyboard and has left marks on the glassy surface of the screen. They are only visible when the monitor brightness is down though, so thats ok. Then the glare picks up and that can be annoying, but u can live with it.
The graphics card was great, now i wish it was better. my model has the geforce fx go 5200 64mb card. It plays many many games, have played hitman 2, all the need for speed games including the newest one.... for most wanted u can only set the setting halfway, but thats alright, and many other games, too many to mention.
The CD/DVD drive is a little too slow for me, I wish i could burn things faster. Its a little loud at times, but the acoustic silencer helps a little. Also dont put any discs with homemade labels into the drive unless u like to listen to a tractor engine. The disks are unblaanced due to the labels and they make a lot of noise when they spin fast, like whne watching homemade dvds.
People complain about the speakers.... what do u expect... its a laptop, the sound is great, of course almost no bass, but then thats to be expected... only complaint is that the volume should go louder, its not loud enough at times when ther eis lots of ambient noise around.
This laptop is a beast.... I dropped it from about 6 feet onto a hardwood floor with no consequences while it was turned on. Well there are three small, barely noticeable scratches on the top cover but thats it. I was carrying it from one room to another, holding it over my head, with the power adapter in my hands too, and the cord hooked onto the knob and pulled the laptop out of my grip... .the laptop was still on working perfect when i picked it up.
Now here are the problems. ... my hard drive, 80 gigger, physically crashed about a week ago.. so that makes it about a year and 5 months after the purchase and about a year since the drop incident. the read head has crashed against the platter, so now ill have ot pay 500$ to get the data recovered which i really need. I decided to buy a 100 gig toshiba 5400 rpm drive, which works like a charm. The 100 gig is clearly faster than the 4200 drive originally in the laptopl and the power consumption is lower too surprisingly.
second problem is sometimes, the cd/dvd drive freezes, and the laser wont move.... dunno why that happens... but popping the disc out and reinserting it solves the problem... and the last problem is there is a little flap on the left side, and the little locking clips broke off after about 5 months... so now it just flaps and i cant lock it in place... but ive gotten used to it. oh one more thing... wireless driver support for 2200BG intel card sucks on linux, and the sd slot doesnt read mmc. also the pcmcia card slot is longer than usual, so the audigy 2 nx or something like that pcmcia card doesnt fit, unless u get revision C.
anyway... good laptop to buy... ive seen it for very low prices now... i paid 2600 canadian dolalrs for it, but ive seen it for 1700 now.
hope u enjoy this review... if anything email me. Vijay RaghvaniPosted: 10/01/2006 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? A good little machine. My only gripe is that the modem and sd card slot does not work, and never has, and toshiba were useless with it.
MarkPosted: 01/01/2006 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? My toshiba satellite M30 is great i bought it for $3600 with a Centrino 1.8GHz processor and 512ram (now have 2GB though because of upgrades) 60gig hard drive from harvey norman havent had any problems. I like it very much it handles basically all games well and i load things very quickly. the only thing I dislike about the toshiba M30 is it is a bit disapointing in the graphics with its Nvidia FX Go 5200 64mb, but it is an alright graphic card.
AND replying to Ofelia G Omitogun a 1.8GHz centrino is equivalent to a 3.0-3.4 in normal intel form. kirkPosted: 19/11/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? It's a great machine however just under 12months of use and the thing died on me. I sent it in for repair and they explained the motherboard went on it. Anyway after two new motherboards and graphics chips it seems okay now. Oh...i've also bought additional 2year extended warranty.. mansurPosted: 15/11/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? yes its really good, but now got a problem with its 60GB hdd- bad clusters- and would like what other hdd can be compatible thanks Bob EckessPosted: 20/10/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I purchased my M30 a couple of weeks ago in Edmonton, Alberta. The M30 I purchased had a 100G hard drive installed and came with 512 meg of memory, I added another 1 gig to the system myself. I liked the idea that the DL DVD recorder records on any format. The Nidia 128m direct video card was better than an intergerated card. The booster in the wireless works very well and picks up hot spots others can't. Before I purchased I compared between a few models. The Toshiba M30 was the best for the money and performance.
I paid 1806.00 Canadain for mine in Canada. SabrinaPosted: 23/09/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? yes it is really good....got mine in Hong Kong last Dec for $1700....its not new anymore.... robertPosted: 13/07/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I've tested my 1.6GHz processor by sisoft sandra. Performance 1.6GHz with 2MB cache it can be compared with Pentium 4 2.2-2.4GHz. That seems quite well. I never believed dealers. They always lie. Ofelia G OmitogunPosted: 09/07/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I wonder if indeed a Centrino processor is double than its capacity. The Dealer says 1.7 GHz really means 3.4, is this right?
So far, so good, it is light and the screen is big. But I got my laptop for about $2000. Posted: 01/07/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? WHY yEs if like go for the lot caesPosted: 20/06/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? i know alot of people that have bought it.
i personally have had bad experiences with it, had to replace the mother board, wifi card, power adaptor, battery within a 10 month interval. I think that is it for now, hopefully.
oh yea, the monitor has dead pixels, but not enough for warranty to cover it.
the laptop gets quite hot as well. toshiba has horrible customer service as well. they also have a no replacement policy that is very strict. they are very rude and I am never buying a toshiba product ever again. MarlenePosted: 08/05/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I just purchased this machine and like it very much, I know it's a last year's model, but I got it for an excellent price of $1600 CDN. What I really like is the 3 communication choices, modem, ethernet and wireless.
What I don't like is my camera card will not fit in the slot. Oh well I can plug my camera to the usb port to download. I love the 17" very clear screen.
The sales person told me it has a 3 1/2 hour battery life - I have yet to test that part. JoannePosted: 02/03/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? i've just bought one, and it only cost me a fraction of what you guys have quoted. mine (fully loaded and ready to go) cost 2300 and change from Best Buy.
So far, i love it. my only complaint is the short battery life, and the tinny-sounding speakers. but, for the price, i was hard-pressed to find something that did what i wanted for the money (i run an online magazine).
i love the widescreen, the weight, and the alloy casing is fabulous for a butterfingers like me. haven't dropped it yet, though *touch wood*.
(Hi Joanne. Don't forget that the information is almost a year old, which probably explains the price drop. -Paul Zucker)
VictorPosted: 12/02/2005 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I have had this model for around 10 months now, and overall I would give it a 8/10.
I had the DVD drive replaced because it stopped working after 3 weeks. At the beginning it was extremely slow until one day it just ceased to work. The warranty covered it and am happy to say it works relatively fine now. I believe this specific DVD/CD combo (from Matshita/Panasonic BTW) has had its problems.
Now, one of the issues that I have not seen here; that I have never thought about; and that now I believe is somewhat important. The HD is positioned exactly below the left hand, so after a couple of hours work, your hand will be as hot as the HD, and the feeling of that sucks...
On a good note, I loved the "glassy" screen on the special edition...it just looks nicer...
Cheers...
Victor RyanPosted: 24/09/2004 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? no james the dvd drive is compatable with both + disks and - disks. JamesPosted: 13/07/2004 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I notice the DVD drive on M30 is very slow. when I tried to select a chapter on a DVD film it takes ages to load. I also burned a DVD for some data back up from another machine and it's so slow to load (sometime even freeze)...anyone have similar problem? is it because the DVD I burned is in the wrong format (DVD +R / DVD - R...etc)? H CPosted: 01/07/2004 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? The M30 is a reasonably good machine.
I agree with 4200rpm being a bit slow.
The main feature I think that recommends it is the WXGA with CSV. Great for watching DVD's and the like.
However, if you're after a longer battery life and increased portability and performance. Have a look at the Tecra M2 series. Almon ChaiPosted: 29/06/2004 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? I have had a trial use on the M30. Overall, the unit's not bad. It's true that with the same price, we can get something better, but when it comes to stability, Toshiba is one of the few top ranking. If you do carry the notebook around, its magnesium-alloy casing would prove to be a good asset, should your computer choose to "kiss" the floor. Btw, Toshiba has now released a "cheaper" version, the M30-7301. Worth looking into guys.
timPosted: 26/04/2004 re: Is the Toshiba Satellite M30 a good choice? the m30 looks really good, and even though new models with better specs have been released, i still consider it far too pricey.
its still around $3700 for a 1.5GHz with DVD-R/RW, 512M and 60GB, whilst $4k buys a 1.7GHz with 80GB.
if you really want one (becuase you like its looks or whatever, and i wouldnt blame you if u fall for its looks), you could wait till june because the word is that toshiba may make the m30 available to non-retail partners, which could mean cheaper models. but toshiba wont guarantee that, and is subject to them being able to meet sales goals for the m30.
other than that, there a few other widescreen options to look at, such as hp nx7010, acer aspire 2001 (although i think the acer is a rather old and underpowered model, and a new moel should have been released to replace the 2001 like elsewhere, but that hasnt happened yet, if it will happen), the asus m6000n or the asus w1000n (out maybe mid-may).
the hp and acer use radeon 9200, which is comparable to the geforce 5200 on the m30, but the asus use radeon 9600. the asus should also be cheaper than the toshiba as well.
