How can I switch DVI outputs?

Thursday, 22 November, 2007

I have two DVI outputs - a PC and a Sky HD box.

My TV has only one DVI input.

I have the appropriate cable for HDMI to DVI.

Is there any way to connect two DVI devices to the one port on the TV. For instance, like a SCART splitter, but a DVI version?

Grant , Davey Jones' Locker,

There are a few choices Grant.

The most basic is a 2-way DVI switch box. This has a mechanical switch that you must change to switch between the sources.

The second is the same but has a remote control to make the switch. In both cases make sure that it also switches audio at the same time.

The high-end solution is to buy a hi-fi receiver that not only gives you surround sound but also switches between inputs. I notice that you say you have an HDMI to DVI converter cable and I presume that's because the Sky HD box has HDMI out and not DVI.

You might find that it's easier to buy a switch box or receiver that switches HDMI and use a similar cable between your PC and the receiver. HDMI and DVI carry the same video signal and just need an adaptor to connect between each other.

How's the Sky HD anyway? We're waiting for our equivalent service (Foxtel HD) to be launched down here in Australia in a few months. We guess that it will use the same receiver that Sky has,

Anyway, since you're in the UK, here is an eBay search to show you the sorts of switch boxes you can buy.
