Since I last downloaded something from Java, I can't renew my Norton antivirus. I'm totally green in the computer dept. so go easy on me. When I try to renew,symantec server cannot find "http://&eng&usa&in&oslang=iso:eng&oslocale=iso:usa&vendid=003&vendtgag=0/" -I have no idea what that is.

I had my computer in the shop and I have just found that when I click on my Norton 2008, it will not open. The hourglass appears for a second and then nothing. I also notice there is no icon in the system tray. If it's been shut off, how do I turn it back on?

The horrible truth about Norton

Norton products are probibly some of the worst security products on the market. Ok I may not of provided much of a reason, but I'll start by saying that Norton is a 'nice' security product, of which the most resent versions 2006 and 2007 are actually becoming useful (i.e. they are finally able to remove pretty much every virus or harmful program) its a nice interface and easy to use (once its working) and internet securty even comes with a nice firewall :O. Well thats all now for why it should be hated for all time...first Norton Products are system resource hogs, they literally eat away at your systems speed. Second it fully intergrates itself into your computer, this may be wonderful for scans but it mean that when its time to remove its almost impossible in a conventional sence (you simply can't click uninstall). There are 'special' un-installers for it that get rid of all of Nortons componants. Third, it can render even your most harmless and most useful programs useless. You can't use certain server tools like mySQL or run active programs that check for an internet connection without Norton going beserk every ten seconds. Then that nice firewall that stops everything really does stop EVERYTHING even your internet programs. So in conclusion please, please don't use Norton its a wonderful waste of space, its like an expesive papper weight thats too big to be useful and too heavy to move. The only reason that you might, might buy it is that its most resent version 2007 is easy to install and works well (they still suffer from many of the above problems though.

If you want a good anti-virus, maleware, and firewalls try such products from AVG www.grisoft.com which house a nice package that is way better then Norton. It contains all the features and more and best of all it isn't Norton, and its cheaper. If you want total coverage like Nortons Internet Security, AVG's Internet security package that costs the same as norton but the subsciption is for 2 years and any new versions are free for the subscription period :O. If you want type ewido into google and you should get a link to the site www.ewido.net (or use that link) and download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, its free and once its up-to-date its more powerful then Nortons anti-virus scanner and its no where near as big a hog on system resources.

My situation is different, because I have an older version of Norton AntiVirus (2003), with a current virus definitions subscription. After having some computer troubles recently, I had to re-install the program. But after I did, it wouldn't run.

I found the ccapp.exe file, but that didn't do anything. I followed the advice at the Symantec site and edited the registry, and I briefly had half a screen's worth of the program, but it didn't work for long. I uninstalled and re-installed numerous times, but no luck.

I'm just guessing here, but I think maybe in my case the problem had to do with the re-installation not overwriting the "newer" version of files that have come in over the years via Live Update. Maybe the installation wasn't overwriting the newer files because they were dated newer, but maybe in fact the software needs the older version of those files (from the original installation) to get started running again.

So I uninstalled again, and then I went through the Program Files folder and also the Program Files/Common Files folder. I discovered there were still various Norton, Symantec, and Virus definition folders left, even though I had un-installed. So I deleted all those, and then re-installed. It worked! I did Live Update, and (knock wood) things seem to be fine now.

I'm definitely not good with computers, but I thought I'd share this experience in the spirit of "it worked for me."

Same thing just happened to me. It was enabled but when I clicked "scan" to check for viruses nothing happened. After uninstall and reinstall, nothing. Finally I went to Symantec's site, used their tool to completely uninstall Norton, downloaded the patch which doesn't do appear to do anything when clicked on, reinstalled again. Presto! Able to scan. For the patch:

I had the same problem. Noticed that NAV was not running at power up. Tried enabling auto protect. I would click enable, but auto-protect would remain off.

The solution by clay above worked for me. Just browsed to ccapp.exe and double clicked it.

Maybe the better solution

My problem was that the whole CCaPP.exe was gone. Something got it and deleted it, probably a virus.
Symantec advicec a full reinstall, which is apain in the ass and provides no guarantee that you won't have the same problem again... like i did.
Here's my fix:
1- run live update, install all patches.
2- from your installation media search for file CCAPP.exe.
3- copy the found file to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
4- Run live apdate again to update this file
5- Rinse, repeat, wipe hands on pants
Hope this helps, it seems that no one figured this out yet as it appears i'm the only person to try this. Hey.... look ma'.. no brains!

(If it's a genuine product with a genuine product ID, then the most likely cause of the problem is that you're incorrectly entering the ID. For instance, using 0 instead of o. Check again or even get another person to enter it. -PZ)

i just went into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared and clicked on the ccapp.exe and voila it let me turn it on i never could find that file you mentioned called ccregvrfy or whatever but that one i did find did the trick so i put a shortcut to it on my desktop just in case it does it again thanks for yalls help

Can't contect Norton. Norton Web site will not submitt my posting. Can't call from Thailand and they have no email contect that I can find. Norton fails to start at boot with error report for Microsoft which I always send. Manualy start and it comes up without email scan but no suggested fix. Sometimes it does start at boot restart the CPU ten times and it works normally about 5 times. I get the ccapp.exe error sometimes at shutdown. Microsoft says that that is the problem but they don't know how to fix it. This problem started 10 minutes after the last windowXP update so I think microsoft knows what they did to it. But how do I contect Norton I have looked everywhere I can't get any thing out of the web site and yes I havethe proper Cust. ID for usingthe trouble site. Autoprotect will not Enable - Why & What is the fix?

i have an end-user workstation running XPHome SP2. Had NAV '05 on it, uninstalled it. installed NAV '06 & licensed the product. the autoprotect will not enable. the only thing i've not done yet is to uninstall/reinstall NAV '06. would prefer not to go there if i don't have to.... someone have a fix for this issue for me?!?

I have got Norton Internet Security 2005 with Norton Systemworks 2005 on XP Pro SP2. Whenever I start the system, Antivirus Auto-Protect is off by default.
Everytime I log in, I have to turn auto-protect on by right clicking the icon in the system tray and then selecting "Enable Antivirus Auto-Protect". It gets all ok after that. But after some variable time period of 2-3 hours, the Auto-Protect gets automatically turned off. So I have to do the same enabling thing again which is really annoying.

I did the msconfig->startup->ccApp.exe thingy as mentioned in one of the posts here, but its all set as its supposed to be.
Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated?

I just bought Norton Antivirus 2006 and when I put the cd in, nothing happens. So, I go to "My Computer" and click the cd/exe file and theres nothing there! I have done everything.. Please help me :(.

I have norton corporate enterprise with the same problem. I constantly get a notice saying it's turned off and the box to have it auto check is checked.... I had this problem with version 7 and 8 and now have this problem on 8 different computers... it's a constand problem because you don't know if you are protected or not..sigh

Run msconfig then startup
if ccapp.exe is not ticked tick it
if it is not there at all do the following
1. search for ccapp.exe then copy the file from the directory
2. open my computer■C■documents and settings■startup menu■programmes■startup-
3. paste ccapp.exe to the directory
4. restart
this should fix it. It did with me

If you cant turn on "Automatic Live Update", then something else to check is to see if "Task Scheduler" in the windows services is enabled. To get into the services, type in "services.msc" from START->RUN.

One question we get on a continual basis is how to COMPLETELY remove Norton Antivirus from a computer. For the record, we do recommend Norton because it is great at what it does. The only trouble is when it DOESN■T do what it is supposed to. We receive so many complaints about Norton not removing properly, or new Norton installations not going smoothly because of old remnants left after a partial uninstall, that we created a tutorial at www.schrockinnovations.com/removenav.php.

Bottom line is that to ensure that a NEW Norton install works properly, you have to first have a COMPLETE uninstall of the old version. If you do not, you will have problems installing or reinstalling. If your goal is to ditch Norton and move on to something else, a complete removal is just common sense.

Needed to take it one step further. Had a directory c:\program files\common appeared empty, but couldn't delete it. NAV has ssRegVfy.exe and ccApp.exe in c:\program files\common files, both names are similar and this is where the problem is. start up in safe mode and delete the directory c:\program files\common and your issues may go away as did mine. Thanks.

I cba to read all the answer, but if someone has already said it im sorry, but to enable nortan antivirus autoprotect, goto the dir folder for nav and click on ccRegVfy.exe and ccApp.exe
This worked for me, once i had executed these files, it let me enable nav.
To solve this so it always works, run msconfig and on startup check the box that a related to Symantec.

omfg. i have nortan anti virus 2002 and i got the same problems!!! I HAVE GOT 2 VIRUSES ON MY COMPUTER bloodhound.wp3. something and i reckon they both disabled my anti virus! when i put my curzor over enable the enable thing vanishes! and my nortan anti virus has been unistalled still my nortan internet security is not unistalled but dosnt work! and i tryied putting task manager on it wudnt work either i went on this website were u download this program and click ok on it to enable task manager it was the same! it vanished wen i put my curzor over it. do you think i need to get a cd and copy all my data on it wipe out my computer and put all the good data i need back in again?

I think im experiencing pretty much the same problems as everyone else on Norton Internet Security 2003. My auto-protect is disabled and nothing happens when you try to enable, my email scanning also shows error. Furthermore, all antivirus support sites will not load up. I cannot get onto mcafee.com, symantec.com, pandasoftware.com etc. I tried following BA's way of making it work with the ccApp thing. This is not possible because the dialogue box opens, but shuts automatically after about 5 seconds. Another thing is that its impossible to uninstall because its uninstall utility says im not authorised and it encounters an error when i try to uninstall using the windows add/remove program utilty. I'm going out to buy a new anti-virus now. Norton = big let down.

I bought Systemworks 2005 last season and now that THEIR faulty software has shutdown multiple times and requested re-activation, I get a message saying that it has been re-installed too many times. They want me to send them the CD, the original sleeve it came in, sales receipt, info on the seller or store where I bought it etc. Then I am supposed to wait 3 weeks for them to process their investigation to determine whether they are going to send me a replacement for the one I ALREADY BOUGHT!!! I am going to follow through with their charade only because I know everything is legit from my side, but I guarantee you, I will be seeking an alternative. BEWARE: SYMANTEC IS RECALLING MY PURCHASED CD FOR NO GOOD REASON AND LEAVING ME WITH NO ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION-THEY CAN DO IT TO YOU TOO!!!

My issue is associated to these. I cannot run a virus scan, don't have autoprotect enabled, and the worm won't even let me run MSCONFIG. Now THATs bad! any ideas?

It won't let me access the symantec knowledge base either. ugh...

We run a ten machine setup with Nortons Anti-virus and when one of the main machines caught a trojan/virus, Nortons refused to Enable. I havent been impressed.

My problem with Norton not opening sounds a little different. I completely wiped my computer and reinstalled everything how I wanted it, then made a Ghost image to refresh my computer every few months (ahhh... so clean).

Anyway, after restoring the Ghost image (tried about 6 times now) everything works except Norton. It simply won't open. I have the auto-protect and ghost icons in the tray, and updated the virus defs from majorgeek.com, but still won't open. Tried all the ccapp stuff, but the damn program just won't open!

Any ideas?

I have been fixing computers professionally for over 10 years now, and have seen allot of Symantec (Norton) and MacAfee software fail to stop infections.
(When they're not crashing systems)
They are past their prime, move on.

In just about every case I used a free version of BitDefender to fix them all. Test it out for you■re self it's a nice program.

I have the same problem with vet getting updated file definitions I re installed vet turned off zone alarm then rang vet they were no help at all so I downloaded free AVG from grisoft it picked up 2 trojans that vet didn't and fixed everything so all of you unhappy norton users try AVG I will be buying the full version now not because anything is wrong with the free one but they deserve to be paid for a good product.

My virus protection is out of date but i do not wish to upgrade, however there is a security alert window which apears every 20-30 seconds telling me it is out of date. I have been through the options menu and found a check box called "alert me if my virus protection is out of date" but it is unchecked already. If you have any ideas on how to stop this i would be a very happy man.

A post by BA (in this thread) solved my problem as "somehow" the program ccapp got removed completely from the statrtup. I could manually start it up (Start->run->ccapp) and all would work fine, but it would not startup at boot.

Thanks to BA for his recomedation of "Starter 5.6.1.40". Nice little program.

I recently purchased a brand new top of the line Sony Viao laptop for close on $3500. You'd expect to have a nice clean laptop with no crap already installed. And what do i find... Norton Internet Security 2004 14-day trial!!!!! Far out! I kept my cool, uninstalled it. But alas i have still not been able to fully rid my computer of it and every new winoptimiser, or cleaner i use can find some traces of it left behind. Even when i installed it to start with the tray icons stayed and they wouldnt close without some help from 3rd party apps. I don't like the way norton infected my pc like a virus and i think that sony should rethink it's mokey making idea by including products on laptops that some people will not want!!!!

I've not experienced any problems with NAV products, however, the issues listed below and above, are [i]very[/i] real. There are several very good, and FREE, anti viral products out there, which do work, so why persist? Depending on your setup, you'll most likely need several products.
Antivirus - one can be found at www.grisoft.com
Firewall - www.zonelabs.com
Anti Scumware - www.lavasoft.com
System Protection - www.safer-networking.org - don't forget to enable teatimer which also protects your system settings. Be warned, that some people have problems with teatimer, so if it doen't work for you , you can disble it and still be protected.

A waste of time. Their suggestions were that that either my system, Windows XP and/or other installed software are causing some system conflict or conflicts???!!!

OH YES, they suggested that I install all XP updates (I have done so, astutely & frequently), third party software updates or possibly even uninstall other culprit software???!!!

BUT NO, SYMANTEC STATE THAT THEIR SOFTWARE IS NOT THE CULPRIT OR TO BLAME?!

Another annoyed Norton customer (never again will I buy their stuff)...Here's the deal:

Unlike other posters, my NAV and Firewall appear in the system tray upon boot up. But then a warning window appears, stating the following: MICROSOFT VISUAL C++ RUNTIME LIBRARY Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe abnormal program termination

Then when I click 'OK' (as if I have another option), the NAV/Firewall icons disappear from the system tray. I can get them to return if I use START-->RUN-->ccApp.exe, but it's a major PITA to keep playing this game of stuff disappearing/reappearing.

ccApp.exe appears in the msconfig.

What's my problem here???

The solution is quite simple so dont get too frustrated. The exact same thing happened to me. This is how it is fixed:
1. Click START > RUN. Type MSCONFIG and press ENTER.
2. A "system configuration utility" should appear. Click on the STARTUP tab (last one)
3. You should see all the executables that are run at startup. The ones that interest us here are ccApp, ccRegVfy specifically and anything that has C:\program files\etc... without qoutes before & after the command.
4. The problem is that C:\program files\common files has spaces between program & files & between common & files. Unless there is quotes before and after the command, the command doesnt execute correctly. It should look like "c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\ccApp.exe" Notice the" & " at the start & end.
5. Now to fix this Click START > RUN. Type REGEDIT and press ENTER.
6. The registry editor now starts. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > Currentversion > Run. on the right pane you should see ccApp & ccRegVfy. Right click > modify. Now put these commands into quotes "C:\...exe". Hit OK
7. When your done, restart your PC & whamo. All should be fixed.

try this out
click on the start menu ,then on the run option, then type in the dialog box "ccapp.exe" (without quotations ) after that open the Norton program and check if the Auto protect is ON or not .
If it is ON then everything is fine you just need to run a liveupdate and restart the computer .

I don't have a solution for you. I just wanted to say Symantec AntiVirus sucks. I run the corporate edition in an enterprise environment and have seen this over and over. Sometimes I download the Virus Update Utility from their support site, run it, and that resolves it, most of the time I have to completely remove the antivirus and liveupdate, purge all the symantec registry keys and reinstall to fix the problem.

This is only one of many types of Symantec Antivirus application issues I have.

It's disgusting that the knowledge base on symantec's support site has no articles referencing this known problem and many others.

To add insult to injury, I paid over $5000 for our solution and virus subscriptions and THATS the support I get. Calling Symantec is a joke as well. Most techs don't even understand how their products function.

Suggestion: Count your loses and move on to another Vendor. Good Luck.

If you tried everything and nothing works, try uninstalling and then reinstalling Norton. Personally, I would get a different anti-virus protection because Norton sucks and is difficult to operate. Hope I helped someone.

I tried various suggestions on this site but came up with my own accidental fix. First let me share something I discovered in the services of W2K. Every time I started the symantec live update service and changed it to automatic it stopped the WMI service and vicesa versa.

Phase 1. I started the update manually by running the live update program I down loaded earlier while running the automated fix program Symantec has. Some one posted the link.

Phase 2: While that was runing I started the Symantec WMI service manually and it started updating the system and finished. I restarted and finally have a normal icon with no red X.

I have been using Norton since the Dos days version 5 and find it to be very reliable but when something goes wrong because of a irresponsible user or new virus etc it can be the biggest PITA to fix of any program written.

hi guys. i removed Nortin 2005 totally by using add/remove programmes then by typing in to the run bar "regedit" dropping down the software tab and deleting all Symantec nasties. I'm using McAFee Internet Security 2006 and after about an hour of tweaking i just love it. GOODBYE SYMANTEC. Andy :) :)

Why, oh, why, oh why...do people buy Norton Products. They are so bloated and uses too much system resources (bringing your computer to it's knees) these days that they are not remcommended by many computer savvy users.

My commend to you all is to switch to NOD32. It scans alot faster and is cheaper and uses less system resources making your computer faster and safer at the same time.

Windows Firewall is powerful enough. All you need. If you need more features, get ZoneAlarm.

"My computer just got a virus today. I clicked on an attachment in an email (yes, I know I shouldn't have but I meant to right click but left clicked instead). Anyway, my Norton Anti-virus never picked it up as a virus and I even scaned the attachment first. My Norton Anti-virus was up to date as it always updates itself...yet it still did not detect the virus. The virus disabled Norton and cannot get it to run. Furthermore, I cannot bring up the task manager as it quickly disappears before I can see or click anything. Anyone know how to fix this.

I had a problem with Norton 2day, and i stressed for 4 hours about it. After straining for ages, I googled my question and this page came up with the same problem. After following one of the people's solutions on this page, the 2 step one, the problem was fixed and now I'm happy bout it. Oh and Norton is a tool.

EVER TRIED UNINSTALLING A BLOODY NORTON ANTIVURS THAT COMES WITH THE DELL NOTEBOOKS???? ARRGGGHHH!!!!!

This is horrible. I have spent about two weeks remving bits and pieces of Norton Internet Security... WHen my subscription expired these popups kept coming up saying its out of date... contoniuously one after another. Every time i close one another opened. SO i started to uninstall.. but hang on.... "can not delete being used by bla bla" "failed to uninstall". AND YES THAT WINDOW STILL KEPT POPING UP AND UP!!!...so i used the task manager to switch off the symnatec update bullcrap. UNTILL SOMEHOW MY TASK MANAGER STOPED OPENING!!!!! And I tried and tried and tried.. untill I got the bloody order right to start deleting something. Then i had to disable the services from services in Administrative Tools and then delete. Yes finally was getting somewhere. It allowed me to delete Norton WMI Update.. AND THERE WAS ONE COMPONENT OF THE BUNDLE LEFT... LiveReg ( symnatec Corporation) I proceeded to remove the program when i was hit with the message "..can not delete bla bla bla program being used by Norton Internet Security"... a component of the bundle i already deleted previously... and so i am left with bits and pieces of Norton/ Symnatec all over my hard drive.. unable to properly remove. and from here on i say a big up yours to Symnatec!

I can't view Norton 2004 antivirus status. When I double click on the icon, nothing happens. I can right click on C or D harddrive and can scan them but can't bring the status screen up with the subscription info etc. I can run live update also.

I had been searching for 2 days - a total of about 15 hours, to find why my Norton auto-protect would not enable. I searched the Symantec database, followed their instructions, searched the data on 2 programs I had recently installed looking for bugs, and tried all my own solutions -- nothing ! I started doing google searches, and this morning found this page. I scrolled down and found where someone had used an easy solution - they referred to a post on 3/9, so I quickly scrolled down to that post, tried the suggestion posted there (I used CodeStuff Starter) --and it WORKED ! Auto protect was instantly enabled ! I restarted my computer to make sure it would stay enabled - and it DID ! THANK YOU so much !
I bookmarked this page in case a future liveupdate is flawed :o

My computer just got a virus today. I clicked on an attachment in an email (yes, I know I shouldn't have but I meant to right click but left clicked instead). Anyway, my Norton Anti-virus never picked it up as a virus and I even scaned the attachment first. My Norton Anti-virus was up to date as it always updates itself...yet it still did not detect the virus. The virus disabled Norton and cannot get it to run. Furthermore, I cannot bring up the task manager as it quickly disappears before I can see or click anything. Please send me an email if you know how to fix this.

i tried to open norton internet security to do a full system scan but i cannot even open the window!!
i followed symantecs adviec to uninstall if it didnt work via windows add/remove and even there removal tool wont work!
i am in the middle of my uni exams and i need to fix my comouter, my email address is inaccessible other than a yahoo one!
i just want to uninstall the product and it just won't let me!

I followed BA's advise posted on 3/9 & Stuart's posted on 3/10 BOTH!! First I ran a search for ccapp in all files. Found it in the same Common/Shared Files that Stuart did. Instead of dragging, I copied the shortcut & pasted it in the AllUsers/StartUp folder, restarted machine & VOILA!! AutoProtect auomatically enabled & icon reappeared in tray. Sure beats uninstall & reinstall!

My NAV icon also shows disabled for several minutes after statup, but it does come on eventually. I started noticing this about the same time as XP SP2 came out, so it's probably some patch to work around a problem between MS and Symantec.

I suggest you not launch any network applications until after the icon is enabled, especially email. So remove any Startup programs that might allow internet access before NAV is enabled.

Have just reloaded NAV 2005 as advised in their troubleshooting. Have now Lost SPF firewall and also found I needed to download Live Update and had missing files as a result of following their instructions to remove all %temp% files... waste of 12 hours.. please beware... now have more Windows ME error messages as well... Sygate will not reload..

With Norton 2005, if your system shows that it is "disabled", launch Norton Antivirus. Click on "Options" at the top. Another window pops up. Click on "Auto Protect" underneath "System". There should be a button at the lower right of the window called "Page Defaults". Click on that and then click on "Ok". That will enable your Norton Antivirus again. I do not know about the other Norton programs, nor the other versions of the Antivirus software, but if you have those options, try it out.

Because of a new virus called TROJ_BAGLE.BH the Pentagon discovered it on April the 17 th with a company called Trend Micro on the 18 th. Currently some companies do not even have a definition let alone a fix. The Pentagone is refusing my reports because I cannot find a way to fix my computer. You can read what the virus does at one of the new sites but in short it cuts off your virus, spyware programs and speads in your email. I wrote this Trend Nicro as they have a free scan and they show my unit to be clecn when I know it is contaminated. Norton will not work or update; the Micro soft beta progam as my Ad Ware will not work plus the Pentagon still says it is contaminated. It is scary how no one is warning anyone or trying to do a fix. I have tried most of the fixes here to no avail.
Norton Antivirus 2003 Pro is being uninstalled right now and will then install AVG Free edition.
I have used Nortons from the dos days and have promoted it, but now is the end.

I tried all symantec and the above solutions. starting CCAPP.EXE manually fixed the problem till next boot.
This workaround solved it for me;
I dragged a shortcut from c/prog/common/symantec shared/ccapp -- to; c/docs&settings/all users/start menu/progs/startup. This has sorted it.

Ccapp.exe is necessary for the auto-protect and e-mail scanning function to work.

If it doesn't switch on when you boot the system you can search it and open it and it WILL run, making the auto-protect and e-mail scanning function running again.

BUT: Closing the system will stop ccapp.exe from running and rebooting will not start it up again. You have to make sure ccapp.exe starts up at the start up of the system to solve this problem!

SO: do the following:
Start --> Run --> -->"msconfig" and look in the startup tab to check the ccapp box. My problem was:

CCAPP was NOT LISTED IN the startup tab of MSCONFIG! In this case NORTON advises to uninstall and reinstall the whole F*****G program: my advise: BEFORE DOING THIS, DO THE FOLLOWING:

Download a freeware program to be able to add and remove programs to the startup list. This way you can add CCAPP to your startup list; check it, and the next time you reboot, ccapp will start as well and thus starting up your auto-protect and e-mail scan functions!

An example of such a program is "Starter 5.6.1.40". It worked for me and will work for you if you have the same problem.

If the auto protect won't enable, go to start, control panel, then security station (windows XP), and then at the bottom click on manage security setting for windows firewall, and click on off, and then OK. That fixed my problem!

The reason is that only one can run at a time.

I went under start, then to run and typed in ccapp.exe. It worked, even when I rebooted. And I don't know much about computers. Thank you!

I also did what Roderick said - ran ccApp.exe in \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared and it worked fine. Still not sure what caused it though...

Sp2 caused me a lot of problems, the easiest to fix was the Norton problem.

There are issues between Sp2 and Norton. You can't run both firewall and anti-virus programs at the same time. I turned off Sp2 anti-virus and firewall right after I loaded it. Now Sp2 security status will say that the (Norton) protection is detected. I also remember one problem I had in the beginning after loading Sp2. I had run Norton LIVE UPDATE (after inst. Sp2), and the updates were downloaded in the wrong order. I found this out from the Norton site and they helped me correct it. Been working fine ever since.

I recently formatted my friends computer and installed XP with SP2, i then installed Norton ANTIVIRUS 2005. Without even connecting on the NET, i encountered an error saying that norton antivius could not start because the Antivirus definition file is corrupt. I re-did the installing twice. Later i even ran the update on the web and still the auto-protect would not work. I then got a copy of my friends XP SP2 and norton ANTIVIRUS 2005 and formatted the computer and redid all installation and i end up gettiong the same error. what could be wrong with the computer. I had no problem installing XP and norton on my compter but on this computer it doesn't seem to want to install.
what could be the problem.?

I have 98SE- and after being on the phone for 4 days with all levels of tech help. THey (who made the product) cannot figure out why the
LI1803 error msg comes up & how to fix this. This company is ridiculous. When you install the product from 2004 to 2005 upgrade on the AntiVirus, the screen disapears,after it installs.
Pick Trend Micro or another more stable co.
I wish I had a solution- it just does not work well.

Okay, after having the Norton system tray icon load with a red X through it every time I started Windows XP Pro, and having no Auto Protect support, even for the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, I tried everything in the book to get it to load, and everything Symantec suggested including removing and reinstalling Norton Systemworks Pro 2004 twice. This is what solved this problem for me - go to the Norton Systemworks 2004 GUI and select Options - Norton AntiVirus; then click on Auto-Protect under the System box; then click on Advanced; then under How to increase Windows start up protection - check the Load Auto-Protect during system boot (recommended); then click OK, then exit the GUI and shut down Windows. When you restart Windows the red X should be gone from the Norton AntiVirus system tray icon.

Why it got unchecked even after reinstalling the product twice is a mystery. My other Windows XP system installed with it checked and has never become unchecked or had any problems with Norton AntiVirus.

I very much like Norton AntiVirus and do not like McAffe at all. Windows 98SE is a dead OS and is pure garbage, like Windows ME, when compared to Windows XP.

How about this: My NAV (with SystemWorks 2003) sometimes pops up a message that antivirs is disabled and it wants to turn off windows notification and let symantec handle virus protection messages. I can close the window, but I will get it a few more times. I never see it disable, but worried it might be something...

Similar problems to many. Have been trying to get Norton AV 2003 auto update working again after installing XP SP2. Nortons website hopeless for an amateur like me and service responses almost rude. So looks like taking the advice of several is best. Don't use Norton products.

When this happened to me it was caused by a virus which Norton did not pick up, but a free online scan by another Anti Virus company did. Make sure your PC is Trojan and Virus free.

In response to Danny's question: Do you really need XP? I think that's an aweful question. It is still windows, but so far the best version hands down. I work as a Network techician for an ISP. I'm on helpdesk and server support. Norton has caused me so many LONG UNNEEDED CALLS it's ridiculous. I think the better question Danny is....do you really need Norton?

What do we recommend for virus scanning? AVG Free Edition. Never had trouble and it's free. Firewall? A router....if you have to have a software firewall then get Zone Alarm (uggh). Spyware/Adware protection...Spybot or Adaware.

Norton is good when it works but when it goes bad...it goes HORRIBLEY bad. Causing more work on everyone else except Norton. I dispise that company more than any other in the world. McAfee I have no quarrells with. Norton is just plain awful!

Hmm, great idea buy Norton Internet Security 2005 with the 3 home licences. Install, update, activate- everything works. Check firewall security with grc.com Leak test- looks great eveything hidden does not appear to be any leaks etc. Enter nortons own security test- try it for a laugh. Returns ping- "install a firewall etc"- not happy. Try to find an email address to report same (not one, total security), nothing in faqs. Frustrated, have no idea- now I read these replies, why did I waste my money or am I being hasty!!

Iv'e seen a similar problem when a trojan has infected the computer and disables autoprotect.
I have used the Stinger program from McAfee(free to download and use) to fix the problem on a friends computer.

After checking the status of the Sys event manager in XP SERVICES, I found it STOPPED.

When I tried to enable it, it said file ccevtmgr.exe not found.

I did a manual search and found that it was under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Help, so I moved it to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared, then started the service.

Reboot and away we go!

I had the same problem with NIS2003 and XP Pro. I am a strong user of Win98SE and thought I'd give XP a chance (several times). All too frequently I had a similar problem to yours. Ask yourself this question: do you really need to use WinXP?

I simply ran ccApp.exe and the icon reappeared, the auto-protect is enabled and everything is working... I know have to find out if it works when I reboot... if not, i'll let you know...

hey i had the same kind of problems my norton antivirus was turn off couldn't enable it same with my norton internet security and i couldn't do anything about it cause i wasnt a superviser or something.

so ill tell you what i did that worked for me i ran my computer in safe mode and went to norton internet security deleted the folder restarted my computer back to normal then went to control panel add/remove progams and uninstalled it and installed it again

And it worked:) Hope it works for whose having trouble

I use NAV 2003 on XP. Had the same issue.

It was because Liveupdate was not complete - couldn't overwrite some files.

I went to C:\Program Files\Common Files
There is a folder Symantec Shared.
Inside that, remove the following files:
ccApp.exe
ccEmlPxy.dll
ccEmlUi.dll
ccErrDsp.dll
ccEvt.dll
ccLgView.exe
ccPwdSvc.exe
ccRegMon.dll
ccRegVfy.exe
ccShtdwn
ccWebWnd.dll (you have to close NAV window for removing this file)
SRNew.dll
SROld.dll

Then, run liveupdate again and restart machine... Works for me

I've always been a fan of Norton, way back since the DOS days when i don't believe there was a cooler utilities suite than Norton Utilities 8. Then along came Windows 95 and the 32bit versions of the Norton range and every year since then its been getting worse and worse. So much so that I found the 2004 edition of Norton Internet Security to be a complete waste of time. Sure it works, but you'd be amazed how much faster your computer can be when Norton products aren't crippling it.

I have recently changed from NAV to Kaspersky Labs and from Norton Personal Firewall to Tiny Firewall Pro. The system is stable, it works a fantastic and is MUCH faster than it was when running with Norton's stuff.

On top of that, Kaspersky actually found 2 trojans on my system which Norton had failed to pick up! (and Norton was definately up to date)...

Whilst Norton products are certainly easy to use, there are definately better products out there.

Kwok says he doesn't see the NAV auto protect on his system tray. When Norton Antivirus is enabled the icon should be there. He also says that after enabling NAV auto-protect, the icon still doesn't show. When NAV is disabled, it should still show the NAV icon with a "verboten" sign through in that it's not enabled. I'm not sure if you can hide the icon but this may be what's happened. He doesn't say if the the NAV properties reflect this change. So, maybe the NAV is starting but the icon has been hidden. Check that.

In any case, after years of using Symantec products, they won't be getting another sale through me. With the 2004 range, activations are limited to around 5 installs regardless if it's the same machine or not. I regularly reformat my PC due to my work and therefore reinstall NAV 2004. When it has reached it's limit it won't run and you need to put a new activation code in. When you ring Symantec, they almost refuse to reset the activation counts and give you a new number. You have to kick up a stink to get them to reactivate it for you. I wrote their product manager a letter but got no reply. Oh well, I work in a large health care organisation and am co-responsible for deciding which vendor gets our business for antivirus software. It won't be Symantec.

My other computers are now running McAfee and I have no problems there whatsoever. When finances allow, all of my computers will be running McAfee.

I run XP pro and had Norton 2002. I had rebuilt this system and applied all updates and had this error even with just Windows and Norton installed. After alot of searching I came across a site which suggested it could be something to do with passwords and accounts. I had no password on my windows account but as soon as I did no more problems! Quite a simple thing to try before all the uninstalls etc (which did no good for me)

At least he got it loaded. I have Nortons Internet Security 2004 on one of my networked PC's I tried to load the copy on your your CD onto my other CD it pulls up with an error at the same place every time. I thought I would try to copy the programme off my other computer and yes, your right it pulled up ut the same spot. So I tried Trend Micro PC-cillin of your CD and it worked fine. Remarkably it found 3,500 infected files a massive amount attached to a programme called DAP which is a fast downloader. Another thing that really annoys is the price one has to pay for annual updates. there should be a cheaper upgrade price for those who have already paid top dollar for the programme, instead these Anti virus companies use us as cash cows.
