Running a tablet in 64-bit

Wednesday, 28 October, 2009

I have not bought a graphics tablet yet but am thinking about buying one.

I just need to know something first and I thought that you all could help me.

I run Vista on a PC but my PC is a 64bit and not a 32bit. Will the tablet work on a 64bit Vista OS on a PC?

Let me know so that I don't buy one and then have to sell it to someone and lose money.

Ken Reedy, Kearney, Missouri , USA

This is my understanding Ken. 32-but software won't necessarily run under 64-bit Windows Vista.

However, any hardware that is supported natively by the operating system should run regardless of whether the OS is 32 or 64-bit.

So that means that even if the tablet doesn't ship with 64-but software it will probably still work in Vista without that software (though you may lose some special functions). Think of it like a mouse -- that would work regardless of the OS.

But wouldn't the best bet be to look it up on the manufacturer's web site?

And if you buy the tablet and find that it doesn't work, won't the store give you a refund?

DO any readers have experience in running input devices on 64-bit Vista?

If the Graphics Tablet is a Wacom,
Ken, it will certainly run....on Vista.
http://www.buywacom.com.au/products
(This is the Australian web-site.)

If you know what type you are after, it's quite easy.

1. "Please Select your Language"

2. "please Select Your Tablet Model"

3. Please Select Your Operating System Type"

Once you've done that, just download.
But, take a good look....at what's available there (regarding the other Tablet Models), you might be very surprised.....before doing your download.
A hint!
(If you do happen to buy a Wacom, the 'Install CD' that comes with it.......actually DOES contain those 64-bit drivers, anyway!)
In fact, most computer hardware these days....usually have 64-bit drivers 'included'......in the Install Program......on the 'off-chance'......that the hardware piece is going into a 64-bit OS.
To that, all I can say, is......'Der!'
The Install CD/Program...will install the correct drivers...to start with. (That's the way the program works.)

If the wrong drivers are installed, it's usually......at the hands of the user who doesn't know what they're doing.

You want to check out other Graphics Tablets............just enter "Graphics Tablets"....into yor Home-page's 'Search-bar.....and have a better look ...at what shows up.
(In your own time, not mine, thanks.)

Ken,
I would go to the manufacurers website (if its a Wacom go to www.wacom.com.au etc) and they should have links there to download drivers, just have look and see if they list Vista 64 Bit as a driver to download.

In this day and age I cannot see why using 64bit software would be a problem! I have been using 64 Bit Vista and now 64 Bit 7 for over a year now and have yet to find any recent hardware that doesnt have 64 bit drivers.
