Why won't Kingston Data Traveller work?
Wednesday, 06 January, 2010
OLD QUESTION
I'm not sure of the technical details because I am not very computer literate. The warning I get from the computer when I plug it in at home is that the device is damaged and can’t be identified. The Data Traveller from Kingston works fine on every other computer I've used and worked okay at home as well. I've tried to update or reinstall the USB device drivers and they are still on the computer.
All other devices plugged into the USB ports at home all work fine.

I’m sorry, but I really can’t offer any ‘failsafe’ set of instructions for you to follow to get the thing working. Problems with USB memory sticks and the like have unfortunately become one of the ‘common issues’ we encounter, and there simply doesn’t seem to a an all-purpose explanation why some people use them without problems whilst others have all sorts of bother.
I suspect that a lot of the time people’s problems stem from either not correctly loading motherboard drivers or Windows updates, or from unplugging the things without taking the time to use the ‘Safely remove hardware’ notification are tool, but that doesn’t explain all the problems I see.
All I can really suggest is that you have all your Windows updates installed. I’ve noticed that you are using Windows 2000 with only Service Pack 1 installed. That OS version is now up to Service Pack 4 and you should update it. If your motherboard uses USB 2.0 then that functionality isn’t added to Windows 2000 until Service Pack 4 is loaded. Then ensure you load the latest available motherboard chipset drivers for your system after downloading them from the manufacturer’s website.
I hope that those two procedures will resolve your problems for you. Further information can be found in “ Why won’t my removable storage devices work?”

My antivirus programs say that they are clean once I get them to work...There's another tale !
As others have noted they work in two of my PCs -- one's a laptop but initially not in my main PC.
After 3 hours I've found that if you manually install device in the install new hardware, the compatible device will show a Disk Drive :"Kingston Data Traveler2 USB Device".
This works but is a bit of a kludge as it still shows an Unknown Device in the Device Manager tab. Note that in the properties of this device WINDOWS\System32\drivers directory will show disk.sys, hotcore.sys, hotcore2.sys,PartMgr.sys as its drvers. Otherwise all's fine.

kingston DTI 2GB dr uday dekaPosted: 03/02/2008 re: Why won't Kingston Data Traveller work? the problem which i had with my pen drive which i posted on 15/11/2007 have been corrected by me with the help of the user manual given with the data traveller itself -
1. Find the ■UMSDTools.exe■ program.
You can find the program in the UMSD, CD-ROM, or Floppy.
2. Double-click the [UMSDTools.exe] icon.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
Once your device was damaged, you can use this utility to recover the device. It will make the device back to its initial status. However, if there are some bad blocks in the flash memory, after you run this utility with scan option, its size maybe less than its initial size.
1). Click on the [RecoverDisk] in [Utility] portion of UMSD manager windows.
3). After you click the [OK] button in the window, the low level format process will be started.
4). Once the job was finished, the complete message will be show up

I have seen similar problems with USB memory devices and in many cases the usb slot that the item was plugged into was only USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0. Even though many devices claim to be backwards compatable, this is not always the case on older motherboards. See if you can borrow a USB 2.0 PCI card, plug it into your machine, load the USB 2.0 drivers and then try your device. If it your motherboard is supposed to have USB 2.0 slot. ckeck your hardware device manager and see if it is actually showing a USB 2.0 , identify it and make sure you have loaded the drivers for USB 2.0.
