How can I get more than 10 minutes of video on a CD?

Wednesday, 26 February, 2003

I have a Logitech webcam which allows me to record video on the PC in AVI format. But I can only record 10-15 minutes of video on to a CD because it then gets larger than 650 megabytes.

How can I get longer times onto a CD? How can I turn the video onto a VCD for playing back on my DVD player. I'd like to get an hour anyway.

Imtiaz Mohamed, Doncaster, VIC

You haven't said what it is you're recording. For instance, surveillance is quite different to a training video. How many frames per second do you need?

There are a few things you can do.
  1. You can experiment with the capture size of the image. For instance, if you're recording in 640x480 then reducing this to 320x240 will give you a file around a quarter of the size (in raw format).
  2. I wouldn't record straight to CD. Record to the hard disk first, then to the CD when you're ready.
  3. Get some software that will convert the AVI file to a compressed format such as MPEG. You may have to buy this -- perhaps some readers can tell us if there's anything in freeware.
  4. Look at some of the previous questions about VCD in HelpStation -- especially the excellent recommendations made by other readers. These are what you'd find if you searched for the term VCD.

If you use kazaa as a p2p program you can search for a program called Xing Mpeg Encoder. If you download this it will allow you to convert any avi format into an Mpeg.
Its quite a good program and will allow conversion for a few other file formats if need be as well. Good for changing avi movies to vcd for your dvd player.

Go to http://www.dvdhelp.com and check out the tutorials. You need to convert to mpeg 1 with free software such as TMPG ENCODER and you can get 60 minutes of video on a CD.

A great free format converting (and compressing tool - I use it to convert movies to VCD for use on my DVD player) is TMPG Encoder. You can get it at:
