Do I need AdAware SE?

Tuesday, 17 May, 2005

I heard on the grapevine that there's a new AdAware SE. What is it, what does it do and why don't I have it, Mr. O'Shanassy?

Dorothy Dix, Blackstump, QLD

My goodness you don’t check important software sites often enough for updates, do you Dorothy?

AdAware SE Personal has been available for quite some time now, and is a considerable improvement to AdAware version 6. If you haven’t already done so, you should download and install the new versions, because reference file updates are no longer being provided for earlier versions. The improvements to the products are listed by LavaSoft as:

What’s new in Ad-Aware SE Personal edition?

Hardened against third party uninstall with encrypted preference files

Scanning engine improvements
  • Extended protection against DLL-injection, SE can unload process modules on the fly
  • Extended Memory scanning
  • Now scans all modules loaded by a process
  • Uses our all new CSI (Code Sequence Identification) technology to identify new and unknown variants of known targets

Extended Registry scanning
  • Now scans registry branches of multiple user accounts
  • Performs additional smart checks to detect dynamically created references
  • Scanning speed noticeably faster
  • Extended Scanning for known and unknown/possible Browser-Hijackers

Extended Disk scanning
  • Now scans and lists alternate Data-streams on NTFS volumes
  • Now Ad-Aware supports scanning of Cabinet files, (including spanned archives)
  • Scanning speed increased
  • Improved Hosts-file scan
  • Now Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch use much smaller reference files

Several User Interface improvements
  • Improved Graphical UI
  • Ad-Aware now supports custom graphical Skins
  • More user friendly Plug-in/Extension GUI (Plug-ins and Extensions now shown on separate screens)
  • New Scan Result view, includes a scan summary and detailed view
  • Ad-Aware now linked to the online TAC database

Multiple New Tweak options
  • Unloading of process modules during a scan
  • Obtaining command line of scanned processes
  • Ignoring spanned cab files
  • Permanent archive caching
  • Always try to unload modules before deletion
  • Disable manual quarantine if auto quarantine is selected
  • Write protect system files after repair
  • Use gridlines in item lists
  • Logfile detail section condensed

Several logfile improvements
  • Includes support for separate removal logfiles
  • Allows adding a Reference summary/index to logfiles
  • Logfile contains overall more detailed information

Download AdAware SE from Lavasoft

re: Do I need AdAware SE?
AdAwareSE did infact notify that it was being released way back in octoberor november -i think- it was before they stopped giving updates for AdAware6 . When ever I used adaware it would ask to update and then warn about the changeover to SE .I have also found that if I use AdAware first spybot s&d useually finds nothing.

re: Do I need AdAware SE?
There is a newer 'improved' version of Ad-Aware out now.
Ver. 6.0
It does a better job than the previous one.

re: Do I need AdAware SE?
My old version of AdAware advised me that an update was available so I downloaded SE. The old version was AdAware Personal, maybe I had updates enabled

re: Do I need AdAware SE?
In regards to Spybot S&D, I'm using 1.4 Beta 2 at the moment. If you go to settings and tick the box that says show beta updates, you will be able to download them through the program's update section.

Remember to immunize after each new download of definitions etc.

Cheers,
Chris

re: Do I need AdAware SE?
Many thanks to "Dorothy" (sorry, that name always makes me think of Dustin Hoffman), for asking this question, it half explains why there have been no updates to AdAware for months and months and .... (Although I'd like to know why the update check didn't tell me that there was a new version?)

It does, however, prompt me to ask about Spybot S&D. I am using 1.2 now (and haven't had an update for months and months and ...), and a check of their site reveals a 1.3 beta 6 version.

Should we now be using this, and is this why I have not had updates?

(Definitely use Version 1.3 of Spybot!  Spybot Search and Destroy is a Freeware product, and unlike Commercial software seldom has ‘Final’ versions of the various releases.  In fact, there has not been a ‘Final’ release since Version 1.1   I’ve been using Version 1.3 for quite some months now, without any problems whatsoever.   Cheers. -Terry O’Shanassy)

re: Do I need AdAware SE?
The thing that annoyed me was there was no notification from adaware itself, I just noticed that it was never finding any updates, I assumed it was because it was Christmas time, and the guys were taking a well earned break. It would have been nice if the program had alerted me of the new version itself, like the way zone alarm does. Just a thought.

Oh no!
Ken, you've stumbled on our heavily, cleverly guarded secret! Yes, we DO on occasion make use of Dorothy to ask questions that need to be asked. Hell, sometimes we don't even use Dorothy to heavily, cleverly hide the fact!

re: Do I need AdAware SE?
I wasn't aware of this new version, thanks for informing us readers. It seems everyone knows about spyware. Why can't the commercial antivirus vendors have a powerful engine strong enough to combat this problem, since we're paying subscription fees? Out of interest, who is Dorothy Dix? I suspect, is she one of your staff coz she always has questions outside the scope of readers enquires. Those were good questions BTW.

(Dorothy would be horrified to hear that you think she isn't real, Ken. But seriously, do a Google search on "dorothy dix" to learn the true story. Or ask any politician. A "dorothy dixer" is a question you get someone to ask when you think the question should be asked. -Paul Zucker)
