Why does ADSL keep disconnecting?
Friday, 22 January, 2010
OLDER QUESTION
I've had my ADSL connecting for some time now and not had many problems with it (Okay - the odd downtime). But recently I've had problems where the connection just drops out and I need to restart my PC to get it to connect again. Using the repair option in the system tray doesn't help at all - it just keeps trying to disconnect the modem but nothing ever happens.
It wouldn't be that much of a problem if not for the fact it's disconnecting
more frequently. In the last 24 hours it's disconnected 12+ times.
I have a D-Link G604T router/modem + wireless.

Is the connection failing between your ISP and the modem/router, or between the computer and the modem/router?
You should be able to log into the router as administrator, then enable/open the Tools menu and look for the Event Log. Unfortunately, the manual on the D-Link web site does not explain what can be seen in the log, however I would expect that it would show startup/connect/disconnect times.
If the Event Log shows repeated disconnects, then changing settings on the computer will have no effect. It's then time to talk to you ISP and work with them to determine if there is a network problem, if your modem/router is wrongly configured, or if your modem/router is defective.
If the Event Log shows stable connections without repeated disconnects, then your problem is between the computer and the modem/router.
Have you created a dial-up client for your broadband connection in Windows? You won't need it if your modem/router is set up with a PPPoE client for connection to your ISP with both user ID and password. In fact, if you have two clients in series it would very likely cause your problems.
Apart from that, you may have a defective network interface card (NIC) in your computer, dud cables. If you have a network hub or switch between your modem/router and the computer it could also be defective.
- If you have a hub or switch, temporarily remove it.
- Swap out the network cable(s) between the computer and the modem/router and replace with known-good cables.
- Replace the drivers for the NIC with the latest drivers.
- If still having problems, replace the NIC.

Have to reboot the router to restablish connection. Any ideas?

Found this problem existed with one, in my unit, after I had moved in.
Someone had so kindly painted over the wall-socket,resulting paint getting into the socket to make it a very tight fit ...for the phone cable.
Then, someone had had tried to clear it.
Bent all the internal connectors, in doing so.
When I tried connecting a phone to this socket, the phone worked ....for a while, then did not.
It pays to check out those internal connectors. God only knows.....what damage has been done to them. Like with any other type of wall-socket, if you have kids.....they might have stuck something in there and done something they shouldn't have.
A replacement didn't cost all that much, now, the phone is working again.
Not a problem any more.
But, be warned, Telstra will charge you $125.00 (plus a 'call-out' fee).....to replace it, IF it is not the MAIN socket (the main one is the only one they will fix, without charge)...to your house/unit.
2 screws, with a couple of wires to be disconnected then reconnected,
(About a 10 minute job, or less....wow!) StewartPosted: 21/01/2010 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? Fixing this problem might be simpler than you think. Well, it was for me. I'm running XP with SP2, and one thing I had not considered was that the issue might be the fault of SP2 itself.
In Microsoft's wisdom to alleviate fears of viruses on people's Windows systems, rather than address the security problem head-on they performed a back-door fix by ensuring that any computer running SP2 was limited to only having 10 half-open connections at any given time.
What this meant in my case was that any time the ADSL bottlenecked due to this new imposed restriction(usually when launching applications,) my ADSL modem/router would just give up and reboot itself.
Since installing a fix from here:
http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads#4226patch
I can happily report now that I have been connected, unfalteringly, for six consecutive days without a single dropped connection. Usually I would suffer these up to 12 times a day. Not only is my connection totally stable but browsing has sped up too.
How to check it'll work for you?: Click Start>(Right Click)My Computer>Manage>Event Viewer>System. Scroll through the events listed here (full screen gives a more clarified overview) and look for Event ID 4226. If you have any of these, you need this fix.
Tip: Although the guide stipulates you should turn system restore off to perform this patch, I felt wary of disabling it and therefore losing all previous points so I left it on.
When the FPS (Windows File Protection System) prompts to put in your SP2 CD, just let it wait a minute or so, and click Cancel. Then, when it questions your ability to make such a decision just click that you want to apply the new settings (can't remember the exact terminology but you get the idea.)
I set my half-open connection limit to 1000 (even though the command window says 50 is the maximum,) and I now have total stability, plus a faster more responsive connection to the internet.

(Try disconnecting ALL other phones and devices from the line. If that fails, call the ISP. -PZ) vickyPosted: 13/11/2008 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? every-time phone ring answer it keep disconnection my Internet do any one known why keep doing that
(The first thing I'd check is the line filter/splitter. They're cheap,. so buy a new one and make sure it's installed correctly. -PZ) PaulPosted: 02/07/2008 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? Hi on the subject of electric fence does a filter not block out the ticking i know someone with this problem in ireland , any thoughts on this or how to get round it greatly appriciated.
(Electromagnetic interference can arrive via a number of paths. It could come via the mains, via the phone line or be induced in either wiring. What sort of filters are you going to use and where? In other words, a power line filter won't help if the signal is in the ADSL line. Talk to the ISP for advice. -PZ) samm gPosted: 04/11/2007 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? one of the major causes of disconnections is H.R (HIGH RESITANCE) on the phone line. It is a disruption of the adsl transmission, usually caused by things like water in the line, corrosion etc......your local telephone providers are able to place a diagnostic tool on the line and actually dtermine where on the line(how far from your house) to the local exchange the fault lies.....there can be many reasons for disconnections, and a faulty line is one of the major reasons. I have disconnections on my line caused by having a very old phone line that has a fault in it between the pole on the street and my home, as the phone tek has determined the fault does not lie between the exchange and the pole ouitside my home........the solution will be to run a new cabel from the pole to my home or repair where the fault lies(most likely moisture in the line). This would then eliminate one more fault, hopefully the last....hope this helps ya peeps..... samPosted: 25/10/2007 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? i kept getting adsl drop outs and when i moved the pc to another phone outlet all is fixed Chris BoothPosted: 25/10/2007 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? One thing puzzles me about the answer from andrew peter collins. Why should an extension cable make any difference to your internet connection? The web site you are visiting can be thousands of kilometres away so what effect can a few extra meters of phone line have on the outcome? I have setups with and without extension cable and haven't noticed any difference.
(It's not the length of the cable Chris, but the chance that it introduces electrical problems. ADSL uses radio frequencies which are much more susceptible to problems than the phone signal. It could be a bad connection or leakage between the conductors or even proximity to a source of interference. -PZ) andrew peter collinsPosted: 23/10/2007 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnecting? Boy this annoys me. Over the years i have seen the most rediculous jury rigs and the posts here don't solve a lot of the problems. Yes, with ADSL you must have filters on all phones in use along with the modem filter. While i agree that unterminated phone sockets can cause problems, it's usually the lack of phone sockets that's the trouble. When i first got ADSL years ago, every phone socket (i have four) had a filter attached, and that was it. The amount of times i've seen one socket with extension leads going all over the place is over the top. You get what you pay for. The days of running phone leads from one room to another are over. If you can't get cable or ADSL is the only broadband you can access in your area, if the phone socket isn't in the room the computer will be in, call your ISP, technician "whoever" to install another socket. Most cables lose 1 db of signal per metre, especially cable running RF for TV reception for example. When Telstra offered me the chance to change over to cable for no charge, i jumped at the chance. For some reason, the idea of having my internet access coupled to my phone line just didn't feel right. Like dial-up, i can see the demise of ADSL down the track. None of my friends are running dial-up and my tech friends like me are on cable. The answer is simple. If you are using ADSL or ADSL2, certain rules apply. Keep all leads as short as possible. Resist the urge to use extension leads and if an unterminated socket is screwing around with the sycronisation and you don't need that socket, get a technician to remove it. The jury rigging days are well and truly over. Cheers Gang Andy. (Um Paul. Why is the word disconnecting spelt disconnectiMg in the subject line? Very very naughty!!! lol. tingPosted: 23/10/2007 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? I had a good ADSL2 connection and went on to ADSL2+ when my ISP upgraded the exchange and brought me over to ADSL2+ with a new modem compatible with the increased speeds. All went well until a few months later when I started getting disruptions frequently and I enquired with my ISP. I checked everything out but because all my hardware equipment remained unchanged including my phone extensions and cordless phone, all they suggested to do was to slow my broadband speed to stabilise the line. So I was reverted back to ADSL. And the interruptions disappeared after it was trottled back. I also notice that you may get more line dropouts with wireless than with fixed connections via ethernet. Evidenced with 2 laptops (wireless) and 2 desktops by ethernet. You should check all the usual suspects, connections of telephone line seated properly, line filtering with phones connected etc. I particularly dislike the suggestions by ISPs to disconnect cordless phones because they're needed in the home, but suggest it be used far away from your wireless laptops.
(Out of interest Ting, I notice that Netcomm has been promoting its ADSL2+ line filter. It's supposed to solve some problems that users are experiencing. Might be worth a look. -PZ) JeffCPosted: 23/10/2007 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? Do you have a ADSL 'in-line filter' attached (between the wall's phone 'plug-in socket and the ADSL cable)?
On every phone plug, in your house ?
There should be !
This is the 'recommended' Set-up....for ADSL modems.
Leave just 1 phone 'wall-plug' 'unfiltered' will cause constant 'drop-outs', making one 'think' that is a 'major problem....with the various 'components' that go together to to make up one's Internet Connection.
That is what these 'filters' are for.....to stop phone-usage causing a 'disconnection' while computer is in use.
And, like anything else, these 'filters' can be 'faulty', too, so, a bit of 'detective-work' needs to be applied.
Like going back to the 'basics'....of re-setting up your Internet Connection...from scratch....1 piece at a time...to find 'source of problem'.
It just may be that a cable is not properly connected, from wall-plug to computer. FredPosted: 21/10/2007 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? There is a good explaination on Whirlpool, at this address. It seems to work. Good Luck.

For that matter I have not discovered any reference to this problem from any other help provider .....
Your telephone connections within the house??.
Do you have other phones connected?
Do you have any telephone connections which are particularly "NOT" connected? i.e. Unterminated?.
Adsl operates at the high end of the audio spectrum and adsl2+ operates even higher. If there is a telephone extension which is unterminated and of reasonable length that unterminated extension can act as an "aerial" thus causing data interference due to mismatching on your telephone line causing reflection of the sent data back to your modem. Your ISP can inform you if they are getting dropouts and/or restarts.....When checking adsl with problems disconnect ALL telephone connections and connect directly to the telephone line. If you are still getting problems then you will feel comfortable in problem solving to find out if it is the telephone line beyond or the Modem or your ISP. Ian MansonPosted: 30/12/2005 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? I may be off track here but I have just solved a similar problem that I was having on my one way satelite service (uplink ISDN, downlink Satelite). Listening to a phone on the ISDN service you could hear repedative clicking on the line. I live in a rural area and decided the clicking sounded like an electric fence. Well it was, and a bit redfaced as it was my electric fence that had developed a short which caused sparking on a fence that runs parallel with the underground phone cables.
Not sure if ADSL suffers from the same problem, or if you are in a country area, but worth looking into.
(Ian, it just goes to show that there's always one more possibility. - Paul Zucker) Posted: 30/12/2005 re: Why does ADSL keep disconnectimg? Hi, i sort of have the same problem. I have a DI-624 D-Link router, it seems to be disconncting all time but then it reconnects by itself. This happens on the computer pretty frequently, but when using wireless on my laptop it hardly happens. This have been happening ever since i bought my router which is a bit over a year ago.
