Why does my ADSL drop out?

Sunday, 19 July, 2009

Okay, I got ADSL.

I have two phones in the house, one connected to the wall and that one sends a signal to my downstairs.

I've got the phone and ADSL in one plug, with a adaptor, and filter.

My wiring is correct I know that, but the ADSL keeps dropping out.

Any clues?

The first thing to do is to disconnect ALL phones and any other devices from the line and leave ONLY the ADSL modem connected.

That's your way of making sure that it isn't something to do with anything that's connected to the line. Many people swear blind that they have everything wired correctly but don't. Remember that the modem must be connected directly to the phone line but EVERYTHING ELSE must be connected through a filter. For example, does that first phone have a filter?

If you try that and the connection still drops out then you should contact your ISP for help. There are settings that can cause that problem.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
Reply to Jack - Common problem:
All wire to the home has what is known as a Demarkation Point (DP). This is there to avoid the arguments who's responsibility the fault is.
Up to and including the the termination at the DP it's the telco's responsibility and, depending on your agreements, they pay.
FROM the termination at the DP into your premises, it's your problem and, depending on your agreement, you pay. Read your contract.
Bear in mind that, regardless, you connect an unapproved device and you blow their swichboards, you pay big time.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
i had the crackling problem and could not find where till i called out telstra, it was a poor connection in the out side pit corroded connection (That would have to be a common problem surely. As long as you don't have to pay for a service call. -PZ)

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
A possibility.
Copper connections to your phone are solid copper punched down into an IDC connector.
The IDC cuts the insulation and scores into the copper (which is why stranded cable is not used)
If there is movement in the wires it's possible that the score could fracture and you lose contact.
Check that there is no cable movement inside the connection enclosure and if there is, re-punch using the correct punchdown -or ask the telco to do it for you.
You can punch down two pairs into 1 IDC pair point but not 3 pairs - if you have 3 pairs, move 1 pair and re-terminate.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
First off real ADSL dropout is not caused by your computer or its settings. It is caused by data corruption or loss of signal. If after going through an isolation process the problem persists check all phone connections on the consumer side of your phone line. If the problem persists call the phone company. Phone lines can degrade for many reasons and the most common is poor or intermittent loss of connection through corroded terminations on the service side.

(Sensible advice Max. -PZ)

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
I had this problem and no amount of software or settings changes made any difference, but moving the modem connection to a different USB socket gave a 100% cure. Moving it back - problem back. A different modem gave the same results. Obviously the USB socket is faulty but as I have 4 & only ever use 2 at once I haven't bothered to get it fixed.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
TRUTH WARNING A hint for Adrian (and others)!
If your ADSL modem keeps 'dropping out' (I wonder 'why' !?!).....TRY putting those ADSL 'filters'.....on ALL other 'existing' phone wall-plugs....YOU have in your house !
That's what they are for !
(To stop the 'interference',from the phone......disabling your ADSL modem !)
If you have 2-6 'phone junction-points'....you NEED 2-6 'filters'..1 per each phone junction, got it !
(If you have done this, and you are STILL getting 'interference' (from OUTSIDE your house).....CONTACT your ISP Provider !
Tell them! (of the 'problems' you ARE having !)
They will provide a 'quick fix',for sure.....(why ?)
You are a customer,aren't you ?
They WANT your 'business' ( the Internet use/use of Phones !)
Last of all, go back....and CHECK every 'connection' YOU have......to make CERTAIN that everything IS securely CONNECTED !

(You just might FIND...that there a 'faulty/loose connection'....somewhere in your modem's 'set-up'.
My 'suggestion' is not new, it is called 'good computering habits'!)

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
I wonder how many users (with ADSL)are still using the USB 'option'..and, having their modem 'drop-out'?
The 'recommended' way is via the LAN port (as most modems are delivered, with the 'necessary cable' for this LAN 'set-up', anyway).
I use it this way (have done so, right from the start, even with Cable).
I know, there are a multitude of other 'causes' that do affect ADSL..like those mentioned below...all it does take to get things right, is, naturally a bit of 'detective work', which a lot are just plain lazy to do.
The best they can do, is to 'complain'.....and, that never gets a computer fixed 'properly'.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
We have only had ADSL2+ for a month or so, and everything was working fine until a few days ago. I would be chatting on MSN when for no apparent reason. The modem would also take ages to sync and when it did, my connect speed was way down from my usual 2.5Mbps to a paltry 300-400Kbps! After a couple of nights on the phone to my ISP we finally found the problem. I have the "old fashioned" phone sockets, so I installed an adaptor that had 2 RJ12 sockets on it. The cordless phone in the next room also had an adaptor with one socket. We finally swapped the adaptors from the next room to the modem socket and I tidied up the "spaghetti" stuffed into the cordless socket, and now all works fine.

(Thanks Irwin. That reinforces what I've been trying to tell people for years. Every adaptor, every extension, every lead is a potential problem. KISS is the rule. I've also heard that a lot of ADSL users in Australia have been having terrible problems lately and the culprit id the rain which is affecting the poor quality telephone lines. -PZ)

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
Thanks for the comment Paul, I understand your point. At the time I wondered if there was some other issue in the background that in combination with that option in Outlook caused the problem. When the problem went away I stopped looking.
My modem and Outlook run 24/7. I restart as required when Windows can no longer handle the build up of dead electrons.

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
The following can be added to Robert's list.
In Outlook (if you use it) uncheck the box, "Hang up when finished with a manual Send/Receive".
To find this check box go to: Tools > Options > Mail Setup tab > Dial-up section. Yes, I know it's in the dial-up section, but for reasons best known to Microsoft it will trip a broadband modem.
My ADSL started dropping out for no apparent reason several months ago and I checked everything, including all the stuff Robert suggested without success. I gave up and phoned my ISP's Customer Support.
Apparently, they had received many calls about this problem at this time. I was told that it took the support staff at my ISP a little while to work it out, but they blamed an Office update for turning on the above mentioned option and telling everybody to turn it off fixed the problem.
I have an ADSL-2 modem / router and unchecking this option stopped the connecting dropping out.

(That shouldn't be a problem if the modem is handling the connection Ken, only when the PC is initiating the log-on through the modem. I think you'll fnd that most users leave their ADSL most of the time nowadays. But a good point. -PZ)

re: Why does my ADSL drop out?
Just went through a similar exercise with a friends installation. ADSL would drop connection every time the phone rang and reconnect a short time after. Initial inspection found everything connected OK but noticed occasional crackling noise on phone. Called Telstra service on a second phone and they tested the line as we spoke. Turned out water had got into the cable. Not enough to cause problems during normal operation but the higher voltage ring was causing it to break down and short the line long enough for the modem to lose sync. A few days later, a line tech came out and fixed the water logged cable in the street pit.'

So, four things to check.
* your modem may be faulty
* your line may be faulty
* your telco could have exchange problem
* your ISP may have a problem

(Thanks Robert. -PZ)
