Dual boot XP-Vista broken

Wednesday, 13 August, 2008

I have Windows Vista and XP dual-booting on my Dell PC.

Everything was fine until this weekend when I started to get a message saying that

"Windows can't start because C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing."

I'm not sure what to do to fix it and I don't want to have to wipe the system and start again. Any ideas?

Smokey Charles, , NSW

This Microsoft Knowledgebase article could be the answer.

You cannot start Windows XP after you install Windows Vista in a dual-boot configuration together with Windows XP

Even if it isn't exactly the problem it seems to relate to that missing file. The only difference is that the problem mentioned seems to be something that happens immediately, not after some time. Still, it might work. Let us know how you get on please Smokey.

re: Dual boot XP-Vista broken
I was also getting that error when i first got my dual boot running on my system and it racked my brain for hours! It turns out that i still had my usb stick plugged in during the boot and startup. As soon as i took it out, it booted fine. For some strange reason, it wont load if u have certain usb components still plugged in!

Hope this helps
