Why won't my video capture card work under Win Me?

Tuesday, 13 August, 2002

After upgrading my Pentium 3, 800 machine to an Athlon P1700 with a MSI K7T266 Pro 2 motherboard (via 8366A & vt8233 chipset) my video capture card/software will not function properly. The Studio DC10 Plus (with version1.06 editing software) keeps returning the error

Miro Video DC30/DC10 plus not found or hardware error.

I do this an the test says "error at decoder". I then uninstall the whole package and after a day or so it does it again. I contacted Pinnacle, who were not helpful, as always, as they did nor even bother to reply. I then decided to just load the hardware. I left it for a week and nothing happened. Next I reloaded the editing software and bingo, it came up with the error.

Do you think there may be an incompatibility with Windows Me (I ran Windows 98 on my old machine) or should I give up an buy another capture/editing software package? I need to capture analogue VHS, edit then re-record it back to tape. The Pinnacle website says that they do not recommend Via chipsets, but my old system ran with a Via chipset and it worked okay. I know it's a long shot but could there be an interrupt problem? Both graphics and capture cards share Interrupt 11. Any ideas as to why this happens.

I think this comes down to the drivers for the DC-10. It's an old card and now and Pinnacle has not, and does not intend to release new drivers for it. So it won't work properly under Windows Me, 2000 and XP. I suggest you get a new capture card. If you still need analog capture, try to get a analog/FireWire combo card. Pinnacle offers a good range, but if you have gone off that brand try something from Canopus, or get a cheap FireWire card (which will always be supported in the future) and the excellent Canopus ADVC100 or ADVC-50 converter box which will give you your analog I/O.

re: Why won't my video capture card work under Win Me?
I had a similar problem with DC10, when I upgraded my computer. Ultimately I solved it by purchasing Pinnacle Studio 7 which supports Digital (via firewire) and analogue via the old DC10 card. The interface is identical and it works fine just the old story -- upgrade your machine/operating system, upgrade your software

re: Why won't my video capture card work under Win Me?
I dont know if this will work but it caught me out originally.
I have another brand of capture card and found that if you installed the drivers for ME it automatically loaded the WDM drivers (which actually are newer drivers) and were incompatible with most of the editing and capture programs I use.I had to use the VFW (video for windows) drivers that were tucked away on the disk that came with my hardware.I originally used the Win98 drivers that were on the disk and they worked fine as they were VFW drivers so try them if you have them.WDM is meant to take over from VFW but most analogue capture companies still only make software for VFW drivers.
Hope it works.Let me know by reposting.

I don't have a solution, but I disagree with the previous solution. I have used a DC-10 plus card with Windows ME for more than a year now with no such problems, although I have had other problems, mostly to do with rendering and conflicts with display setup. However, I did find Pinnacle's on-line customer support very helpful - they solved my problem. Give them another try.
