SATA must be too sensitive
Wednesday, 07 October, 2009
Three months ago I bought a new computer, had my old files on the IDE drive transferred to the SATA Hard Disk.
Three months later the SATA, under warranty, crashes. All my data gone -- years of work wiped out forever.
Now I wonder if SATA is better than my IDE hard disk which has endured low voltage and sudden power outages.
If SATA, it seems, needs perfect environment to survive, otherwise you will lose all your precious data with SATA.

There are a lot of assumptions and (dare I say) mistakes there?
SATA hard disks are physically the same as PATA (what we used to call IDE) disks. The only difference is the electronics that connects the PC to the disk. One is serial and the other is parallel. (They're both IDE or Integral Drive Electronics.)
Regardless of the disk type in your computer, if you don't regularly back up your files to another medium, any loss of data is your own fault. ALL hard disks will fail eventually.
If you data is that valuable, there are places that will recover it for you. It costs a lot but it may be worth it.
The warranty will cover the replacement of the dead disk, but not recovery of the data.
If you're an experimenter, it may be possible to resurrect the old disk. Since the fault is possibly in the electronics, some experimenters have found that if they get an identical disk and swap the electronics to the dead disk, it will work. Paul Zucker

Try moving the HD to another computer or external caddy. You need to get it working long enough to copy off your files somewhere else - e.g. a USB stick. This may sound odd, but as a last resort wrap it up in a carrier bag and put in the freezer for 20 minutes. It may just boot. Has worked for me a couple of times. So once again:
1.Back Up, Back Up, Back Up,...
2.Security, Security, Security,...
3.Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance,...
Aargh...
(You're a tru philosopher Lucy. And quite correct. -PZ) andrew peter collinsPosted: 08/10/2009 re: SATA must be too sensitive If i say this one more time, they will issue a tsunami alert. Buy an External Hard Disc Drive and back your data up every day. For ultra important stuff like JPEG images, burn them to high quality discs and store them in a cool dry place. Periodically, go into My Computer in the Start Menu and right click on that external HDD to check that all the files are indeed backed up. Remember...BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP. GEEEZ! Cheers gang Andy :) ToddPosted: 08/10/2009 re: SATA must be too sensitive I just got a Netgear Ready Nas Duo, cost about $350 put in 2 1TB hard drives and just copied all my backups to it, if one drive fails I can just swap it out, and if I really want to I can set it to backup to an external USB hard drive every night. Very good product for backup storage! MikePPosted: 08/10/2009 re: SATA must be too sensitive These days with the technology and the low prices, anyone buying a new PC should consider RAID mirroring. If you have Years of data etc and don't want to(or are too lazy to) backup that work then mirrored drives will give some redundancy.
What happened to your IDE old disc? If you still have it Burn your Data off that to DvD.
Paul is right - IDE and SATA are the same discs -
