What is SATA vs. IDE?
Saturday, 26 June, 2010
OLDER QUESTION
What is the difference between SATA and IDE hard drives?
(Orginally posted in 2007)
Joshua , Pratchetville,
There is really no difference between IDE (more correctly called PATA) and SATA hard disks, except in the way they connect to the PC. The SATA connector is simpler and the cable is less fussy.
An excellent background article on SATA hard disks can be found at Wikipedia.
Or visit the various manufacturer's web sites, such as Seagate's. Paul Zucker

Difference between IDE (PATA) and SATA in accordance with transfer rates IDE transfers data from the speeds of 5MB/sec up to 133MB/Sec (ATA100/133). SATA however data transfer speeds range from 150MB/sec to SATA II which doubles it to 300MB/sec. SATA cable is smaller, faster. sexier and therefore better. It can reach further then a IDE cable and will also reduce the obstruction to air cooling which IDE cables can contribute to. The cables also transfer data much faster (more crucial if you have two or more hard drives) and are easier to install since there are no jumpers. The only downfall of the SATA is that they easily fall out of their positions and that you can only have one drive per cable.

Serial ATA (SATA) is an IDE standard for connecting devices like optical drives and hard drives to the motherboard. The term SATA generally refers to the types of cables and connections that follow this standard.
SATA cables are long, thin, 7-pin cables. One end plugs into a port on the motherboard, usually labeled SATA, and the other into the back of a storage device like a hard drive.
Serial ATA replaces Parallel ATA as the IDE standard of choice for connecting storage devices inside of a computer. SATA storage devices can transmit data to and from the rest of the computer over twice as fast as an otherwise similar PATA device

JoePosted: 25/02/2009 re: What is SATA vs. IDE? SATA is nothing more than a marketing move. It is only slighlty faster than IDE because most manufacturers now concentrate much more on SATA optomizations than IDE. There was no need for SATA. PATA was doing a great job, just like there was no need for PCI-E. For SATA to transfer as fast as PATA, the data has to go several times faster than PATA. Faster data transfers have more chance of errors. If they made PATA data travel down each wire just half as fast as SATA, than PATA will blow away SATA. All this talk about 3Gb/s is worthless, since the actual data transfer speed that is really relevant is from disc surface to motherboard or vice versa. The speed mostly quoted by manufactureres is the data transfer speed between the buffer memory on the hard disk and the PC motherboard. The most important factor to drive transfer speeds, whether SATA or PATA, is drive rotational speed. If you want a fast drive, get one with a fast rotational speed. Current normal rotational speeds = 7200rpm. You will pay extra and get less capacity with a faster drive, but, it will truly be faster. Check out WD Raptor series which have rotational speeds of 10000rpm. pankaj kumar rauloPosted: 20/02/2009 re: What is SATA vs. IDE? now a day sata is very good to data transfer

>>> "What is SATA vs. IDE?" <<<
The question is quite simply asking the following, but has been poorly punctuated:
What is "SATA vs. IDE"?
Clearly "SATA vs. IDE" is just a simple phrase that has been taken from a computer technology conversation or writing, and contains no contextual references as to origin.
If one wanted to get really pedantic and grammatically precise, then one could also answer that it is a phrase containing two acronyms and one Latin abbreviation.
The word "acronym" is derived from the Greek words "akros", meaning "outermost", and "onoma", meaning "name", and has come to refer to the practice of only using the initial letters of each word from a name and using the letters together as an abbreviation. e.g. Serial Advanced Technology Attachment = SATA.
(Incidentally, the abbreviation "e.g." is truncated from the Latin phrase "exempli gratia" which has come to mean "for example").
You will find a great test for your knowledge of computer acronyms here:
http://www.plentysmart.com/comp/gen-acronyms/gen-acronyms.php
The abbreviation "vs" is from the Latin word "versus", which literally translated means "against". It is sometimes also abbreviated "v".
I hope this accurately answers your question. Ignore all the babbling half-wits who obviously did not take the time to read your question properly, but you should also take some of the blame for the superfluous postings due to your poor punctuation.

StevePosted: 12/08/2008 re: What is SATA vs. IDE?
I had to laugh at everyones posts speculating the answer.. because I am a nice bloke I will answer this.
Simply put.
it is not SATA and IDE, it is SATA and PATA which are both IDE.
Yes physically SATA is nicer to install with a smaller cable.
Yes SATA is faster than PATA. But remember it is the BUS system between the hard disk and the IDE Controller. The hard drive is the same on both. IF your hard drive is fast than it can take advantage of the bandwidth.
The other advantage is its 1 drive per connection, its not sharing bandwidth on a cable with a second drive.
And hot swapping is a feature offered by the RAID controller on the motherboard, its not a SATA thing.
SATA will replace PATA as its nicer to use, and its faster. the Hard Disk that connects to this interface will not change.
You will notice this on DVD drives now also available in a SATA version.

SATA has an amazing transfer rate, the closest in comparison to SCSI for home use.
Please disregard this post. It's safer to simply do your own research. AlexPosted: 11/06/2008 re: What is SATA vs. IDE? SATA is useless, it may have a massive transfer speed, but hard-drives can only read/write to a portion of the speed (around 90mb/s). Although it is alot tidier due to the small wires.
For SATA to be faster, use RAID 0, as the transfer speed is affectively multiplied by the number of Hard Drives in the setup.
I myself use both: IDE for operating system, and SATA for everything else.

kudaPosted: 29/05/2008 re: What is SATA vs. IDE? sata is better than ide DavidPosted: 21/05/2008 why serial is faster than parallel In response to Fred.... while the PZ comment corrects your mistake about serial vs parallel, it does not explain why serial is faster than parallel. The short answer is that as connections get faster, parallel-data-synchronization becomes a bigger problem than modulation speed. Let me offer an analogy to explain:
Imagine there are 16 routes from Chicago to New York, whose total travel time is about 20 hours with a variance of 4 hours. We are going to send sets of cars from Chicago to New York, and we're going to write letters on their hoods which spell a message. In order to properly spell the message, we need to know which cars left together. If we're only sending one set of cars per day, this is really easy, because even if the difference between the fastest car and the slowest is 4 hours, we will have no trouble distinguishing one day's cars from the next days.
However, imagine when we speed up the rate at which we send cars, so we are sending every 2 hours. The fact that they are all taking different routes means they are all getting mixed up. When they arrive at the other end, it's hard to know which cars left together to recover our message. This is like a parallel connection.
Now imagine we send all cars down exactly the same route. If one car gets backed up, other cars in line also get backed up. Now we no longer have any data synchronization problems. In fact, we can send one car a minute, and as long as everyone stays in line, we have no trouble figuring out what order they left in and we can recreate our message.

Can anyone explain how a serial (one way) connection could possibly be faster than a parallel (two way) connection? In parallel communications the data send/stop bits can travel back and control the data flow which then can be instant and non-stopping; in serial communications you have one way traffic, backwards or forwards so to send the stop/go bits you need to stop data transfer to send back. I remember when this came out and it sounded like those things they sell car enthusiasts people to get a mythical 1% more power from their hotted up engine!
