Thoughts on Samsung TVs?

Thursday, 22 October, 2009

Has anyone out there connected their PC to a SERIES 6 SAMSUNG LCD TV or own one of these?

Just looking for some feedback on these TVs. Are they worth the buy?

Longevity of these is one of my main concerns as Samsung has dropped the three year warrantee to one year.

Frank Woerle, Darwin, NT, Australia,

I guess that's a large screen TV you're talking about and the PC connection would be in an entertainment area, not on your desk Frank.

Most modern LCD and Plasma screens will accept input from a PC, usually by HDMI and VGA connectors. If it's HDMI you'll probably need a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

As for the warranty period, I don't know if that suggests anything that they've changed the period. Has it resulted in a lower purchase price?

If it's a Samsung then presumably it's built in Korea and not China. Not that Chinese products aren't any good, but there are some "budget" products coming from there. Samsubng has a good reputation.

As for having a PC connected to your TV, it may just be one of those things that seemed like a good idea, but doesn't get used all that much.

I have a Samsung LCD TV LA32A450C1D which I have used as a second monitor, it works great, I use it for playing movies sometimes. but it's too big to be used all the time.
Mine came with 3 year warranty and I paid another $75 for the extended warranty to 5 years about a year ago.
Great set, no problems to date.

I havent touched Samsung with a 10 foot bulgarian for a while now. Technology-wise, they are usually up to date or market leading, but if you are worried about longevity and support, they are about average. Their support is like having a whiz-kid neighbour with more emphasis on kid than whiz. Quality wise, they are only SLIGHTLY better than LG. (Both Korean I believe).

For plasma, go Panasonic Viera or Sony Bravia for LCD. Toshiba I have heard is good, and Kogan as a cheap buy I heard are ok too.

re: Thoughts on Samsung TVs?
My experience is that most large screen TV's have some limitations depending on connection:
1. A VGA connection generally allows a max of 1024x768 or maybe 1280x768 (or something around there).
2. To get max resolution you need HDMI.
3. DVI output from many PC video cards will not work to transfer to HDMI on these TV's. There are exceptions but it may cause you grief.
4. Most PC output is different from Video, because of this many large screen TV's will have a PC or Video mode, this is like a slight zoom out so you dont miss the edges (menu bars can't be seen etc).
5. Most HDMI/DVI output from a PC does NOT include sound - you will need to get sound via a different cable.
6. Various people with argue with most of this. Do what you will. It will give you grief until you get it right. It is worth doing it.

Now that I have a Ubuntu PC setup beside my 50" Pioneer, I can watch just about any type of file on the large screen (need to add a Blu-ray player to it one day)- BRILLIANT !!!.

As for the Samsungs, haven't tried them, I have a Pioneer and and LG. Both are good, from what I have seen the Samsungs seem OK.
