Strange WiFi behaviour

Tuesday, 27 July, 2010

I've just purchased a Kogan WiFi (built in) Internet radio.

It connects brilliantly to my wireless router (Belkin Dlink) when my laptop is turned on, but has problems when the laptop is off.

My laptop runs Network Magic which (I think) manages the WiFi network.

Should in theory such a radio be able to connect with the router without the laptop being on? Could the issue then be related to the Network Magic software. Clutching at straws here! Appreciate any light you could shed on the subject.

Rob , , Australia

I assume your Internet isn't coming in via the laptop. That is, it's ADSL or Cable Internet,

I also assume that the radio only requires ma WiFi connection, and doesn't need to be in contact with a computer to work. (Did you have to install some software on the computer to get the radio to work?)

In that case then the radio should certainly be working. Network Magic doesn't, in itself, control access to the network.

I am slightly worried by your router description (Belkin Dlink) as they are two quite different brands.

Have you rung Kogan's tech support line for advice?

re: Strange WiFi behaviour
Print copies the manuals for your wifi router and Kogan Wifi Radio. The Kogan radio can connect the router securely using DHCP assigned IP address, but I noticed problems.

It may help if access the wifi router configuration system and discover the MAC address of the Kogan radio and assign a specific IP address 192.168.xx.xx for use by the radio's MAC

On the Kogan radio setup going into the system settings you can tell the radio to connect using the specific IP address etc.

By doing this the radio and router can establish a connection without the DHCP negotiations or conflict potential.

Happy reading!

re: Strange WiFi behaviour
PZ, I'm wondering if Rob's Internet Radio set-up (the WiFi unit) hasn't got it's antenna connected?
(You know, the huge T-shaped one most FM radios do need...to get in the signal?)
I have a TV-card (w/ built-in Radio) that does require an antenna to be plugged into it...for it to work. (Yeah, I can't get that to work, either. Even with the antenna attached. I just just 1 Station, and that is it. And, it records it....into a file ONLY. For use, later on. I gave up trying...to get it to work.)
What puzzles me the most is, that, Rob says the radio works fine.....with the lap-top working, but, not when he switches it OFF!?!
Is he breaking the 'daisy-chain effect'.....(of having the laptop connected/working)......and trying to listen to the WiFi Radio, without using the 'built-in' Sound System....of the laptop?
Maybe the Sound System (of the laptop) is duly required.....to allow this WiFi Internet Radio....to work properly?
Sounds more likely that this unit has NOT been configured properly...to start with. That the Sound coming from it is a 'hit-n-miss' affair.....is a good indictor, that this might be another source of the problem he is having.
Is there something else that he has overlooked/ignored......in setting up this WiFi unit.....to work on it's own, without the laptop being 'ON'?
I think he was in such a rush....to get it working, as usually, as most will do, that he has indeed overlooked/ignored....a tiny detail that is now affecting the operation of this WiFi Radio unit?
Best way to fix it, is , of course......to start from scratch...again.
Uninstall everything associated to this WiFi Radio, then, reinstall it, this time around, do it more carefully. To miss nothing.
The hardware works fine, so it has got to be a problem...with the software, and, HOW it was/is installed/
If the software is installed properly, then, it has to be 'human error' factor....that is the real problem here, again.
Has he consulted the TruobleShooter program....to get some idea...of 'where' the working of this unit has gone wrong? (Doubt it!)
Has he truly read...the Manual correctly, to know 'where' again he went wrong?
Did he read the 'Readme.txt' file, contained within the software's CD? (To find what issues this unit has ...working certain types of computers/Sound Systems?)
(Again, I doubt it, because most people can not be bothered to read these vital parts....when doing a 'troubleshooting task'. Too much time-consuming such an effort!)
For it (the WiFi Radio unit) to work, it must work...in both areas.
It is not.
So, back to Basics, start from scratch again.
