What's Foxtel IQ?
Friday, 13 April, 2007
I noticed that Foxtel was showing off something called Foxtel IQ today. I already have Foxtel, so why do I need this? Or does it connect to my PC perhaps?

Foxtel IQ is Foxtel's name for its new digital set top box that includes a digital recorder with some fancy features. I'll break it down into what I consider pluses and minuses.
These things are also generically known as PVR or PDR. (Personal Video or Digital Recorders).
(Click on the pic to go to the web site.)
Good points
- It has two tuners so you can watch one program and record one.(or record two at once if you like)
- It records instantly, can rewind up to an hour (any time, even if you haven't told it to record) and it has a pause button so you can answer the phone or visit the littlest room.
- It records in exactly the same digital definition as a live program.
- It uses the program guide to set up your recording schedule, even automatically recoding a series of shows if you like.
- It has a 160G hard disk for recording LOTS of programs
- You can record ALL channels the set receives, including free-to-air Nine, SBS and ABC and all movies.
Bad Points
- It costs $495 to get (if you already subscribe to Foxtel Digital) and even then you don't own it. However, it only costs $5.95 a month from then on, and nothing if you have a Platinum package or rent a second set top box. New subscribers effectively pay a bit less, which is also a bad point - no reward for being an existing subscriber.
- Although it has smooth 2x, 4x, 6x, 12x and 30x fast forward and reverse, it has no ad skipping function. (It could have but Foxtel decided not to include it.)
- There is no way to get the digital recording out of the box and onto PC or some other form of storage for archiving. (Perhaps there will be a crack one day, but nothing 'legal')
- There is a USB port on the back but it doesn't seem to do anything.
- You can't feed any external signal into it such as FTA channels Seven and Ten.
I'd be interested to hear if any readers have one of these. What are your thoughts? We have one at our place and it's great. Paul Zucker

(Yes, the satellite IQ and IQ2 need two cable runs from the dish. But Foxtel will arrange that for you. At the m,oment it costs $50. -PZ) Michael OsbornePosted: 19/05/2008 re: What's Foxtel IQ? When you series link programs, IQ won't record the same episode twice.
Unless you manually get it to, by deliberately pressing record on an episode you already have. EthanPosted: 28/11/2007 re: What's Foxtel IQ? USB Port
i guess the usb port in the back is so you can put USB's in there
i think the aim was so that the box could connect to a phone line/internet through networks such as bigponds Home Gateway, ect. why the hell you'd bother i don't know
(Care to guess again? -PZ) annaPosted: 15/11/2007 re: What's Foxtel IQ? in regards to transferring programs already recorded on IQ, the foxtel subcontractor gave me a sololution last week. Supposedly, you just purchase a hard drive and connect the scart cable from one to the other and record files. Sounds easy, but i am not that clued up with all this technical stuff and wondering if anyone knows a/ what type of hard drive i should purchase and b/ step by step instructions on how i do it.
As for picture quality, dont really care, as long as i get to watch what i have kept.
p.s reason i need to do this is we are moving elsewhere and IQ is already there and we need to cancel our subscription!!!

When I set a program to record in My planner and I want to watch what I'm recording I can't, I only can watch all the other channels.
How do I fix that?
(My IQ box gets stuck sometimes. It does things like that or won't let me rewind and so on. The usual cure is to unplug the power for 20 seconds and when I plug it back in the system reboots and works properly. Otherwise ring Foxtel and they'll walk you through the process of downloading the latest version of the firmware. The final option is to get them to replace it, but you'll lose your recordings. -PZ) GeekPosted: 13/04/2007 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Only way to record this media onto ur pc in digital format is to have an IQ box.
Before proceding make sure you have the movies/Documentries or whatever saved on the IQ box so that we can later copy it off.
Take out the seagate hardrive.
connect to your pc.
use this Program - http://www.neildoh.org/Software/Extract/extract.htm
u can access this hardrive like a normal hardrive except the files will be denied.. the Solution above will extract these files..
there u go..
(Well, I'm sure that will please a lot of users Geek. Now all we need is a quick way to remove the drive. -PZ) Neill ThurlingPosted: 01/03/2007 hocking up IQ to a computer I wish I had found this site before I went out and got some usb cable's, I came online hoping to find away around this prob, but no luck, dame, and now I have this usb cable and nothing to do with it.
(I know. Annoying isn't it. And the other annoying thing is that if you have special programs you want to keep, you'll have to copy them out via analog video. Why would you need to? If the old one breaks they'll take it away - that's why. -PZ) JohnPosted: 28/02/2007 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Why bother with that scam. Just get DVD recorder. Unless you want to make sure you don't miss all those nice adds they keep banging on which soon will make me to cancel the Fxtell all together. JamesPosted: 25/02/2007 re: What's Foxtel IQ? What does the USB Port do on the back of the IQ box can you connect it to your pc with a usb to usb cable as an external harddrive and then burn the recorded files onto DVDs with a dvd burner (much cheaper than buying a DVD recorder)
I have rang and spoken to foxtel they say that you can connect it to your computer but say they don't know how to do it (just that it is possible) Hmmm........
(No you can't do that. -PZ) DavidPosted: 25/02/2007 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Erica, If you have read any of other peoples posts in this webpage you would know the answer to your question.
It is 5$ a month and you don't own it and foxtel fix it and upgrade it for you. The cost of this box is going to be like nothing in a year anyway so there isn't much point in owning it.
A PVR system would do the same thing but not at all as easily as the iq box. and who would want to connect their foxtel box to VCR that is dead no one uses that There would be no way I would record stuff to VCR anymore.
"Am I missing something here or do people have that much money that they can just spend it so easily without thinking about things :)?"
you should read other posts before posting. Yes you are missing something and it appears that you haven't read anything posted on this website.
BUTT MY QUESTION IS WHAT DOES THE USB PORT DO CAN I CONNECT IT TO MY COMPUTER AS AN EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE AND THEN BURN THE FILES ONTO A DVD WITH A DVD BURNER (MUCH CHEAPER THAN BUYING A DVD RECORDER)
(No you can't. -PZ) Bert the Secret SpyPosted: 13/02/2007 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Seeing there is so much unsureness about pricing etc, prices as follows:
Cable Only Customers can receive a IQ Self Install kit - $49.95
Conditions: Cable customer, must be existing foxtel customer, if more than one box+bigpond or 2boxes are already present, a technician must do the install as an amplifier needs to be installed.
IQ - $395 outright
Advantage: Platinum package customers dont pay anymore.
Disadvantage: Non Platinum customers need to pay $4.95 each month - almost like a fine for not being on platinum. You also need to be on Platinum for just over 3 years for it to be cost effective and to justify spending $395 upright.
IQ - Monthly basis
$10 per month for Platinum
$14.95 per month for Non-Platinum
Technician costs:
$125 if upgrading existing connection to IQ - non Self Install
$49.95 if you request Multiroom at the same time. This means the technician comes out on site to install a second set top unit into another room. This second unit can be IQ as well as upgrading the first one!!
$125 for Multiroom IF the customer is bundled with AAPT or Telstra. I dont know Optus pricing.
Does this help clear up some confusion?? :)
-------------------
Now people have been saying, why not just buy a PDR and do it yourself. Well firstly, IQ is integrated with the EPG on the internet + the Tv Guide through the unit itself. One touch recording to make things simple.
If you have been watching a show, it allows for Live rewind and Pause. An external PDR wouldnt allow this function.
As part of your Foxtel subscription, if you have any technical difficulties, they will fix it free of charge (if its a foxtel related issue, which 95% it is - unless you got pissed off and used a baseball bat against it, threw that cup of water at it, etc). They will also then give you a credit for the whole period from the time you reported the problem. So even if 1 channel doesnt work, and a service call is booked, they will refund you for that whole period. Pretty sweet if you ask me.
Hope this clears up some questions :)

The great thing is that you can record selected shows continually. I mean set say the simpsons and it will record all the simpons shows aired, and it doesnt record the ones you already have.

Umm... actually, Optus carry some Foxtel channels just like Foxtel carry some Optus ones. In fact, I think you will find that OptusVision is really just a name now, Optus actually resell the Foxtel service as-is. That is, they carry the SAME number of channels.

(Yes, but in real time, and via the analog output, then into a video-in port. What is the "kludge method"? How do you connect the analogue outputs together? I don't mind to loose a bit of quality or to copy in real time as i'm used to this method when i copy from VHS to DVD.
Please help,Cheers:)
Craig
(The Kludge method is to connect the audio and video outputs to the same inputs on a DVD recorder. It drops the quality a touch, but as I said the big disadvantage is tying both units up for the full time. 90 min = 90 min. Of there's still some confusion let me know and I'll write a longer answer Craig. The annoying thing is that the ports are there to do it digitally if you can work out how. -Paul Zucker) craigPosted: 31/03/2006 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Cheers,

(We'll have to look into that one again Craig. So far we've only found the kludge method where you connect the analog outputs together, but then it takes real time to copy and you lose a bit of quality. Stay tuned. -Paul Zucker) AWPosted: 26/02/2006 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Erica, surely the prupose of buying any audio-visual equipment is to use it's features - These itmes are never an investment, usually depreciating 100% within three years. So, in my opinion you should always rent not buy... and at about $5 a month that's about the cheapest rent for a product that has dramatically improved my TV viewing quality. I can (and do) watch whatever show I feel like watching whenever I want. I ONLY watch shows I like and don't have to change my daily/weekly schedule to ensure I am sitting in fron of the box when the show actually airs. OscarPosted: 07/04/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Why not just use a VCR with built-in set top box to record a program, and at the same time record on another VCR the same program coming through your Integrated Digital TV. After 20 min's or approx 30% of the way through the program stop one of the VCR's and start playing. When that's finished, start playing the second VCR tape and continue recording on the first VCR tape, if the program hasn't yet finished. Adds seem to take up about 30% of programs and I can fast forward through those.
(That's an amazing idea Oscar. I'm surprised we didn't think ot it. -PZ) andrew peter collinsPosted: 04/04/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? hi gang. ive noticed a lot of people worrying about piracy and DVD interfaces etc etc but the Feds are only going after pirates who mass produce and try to sell them as the genuine thing in markets and stores. i have 6 DVDS that are pirates.....all the Prince Planet series from the 60s (who's drooling now?) but i prefer to buy a DVD so that you have a nice spine to look at when you put it back with all your other DVDs and a warranty if the disc is faulty cos one disc i bought had a minor fault, the right channel was missing..........so if you buy a pirate, until you get it home you wont know if you have a dud and try finding the seller to get a refund. as for technology, i'm not Kerry Packer so i am waiting till the big switch in 2008 and then i will upgrade and save a fist full of bucks as well. 3 years is a long time in tech..cheers Andy :) :) JimPosted: 04/04/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? this all sounds great , but what of the copywrite laws ? Aren't you in effect stealing movies? Many mentions of illegal copying of programs , movies and mp3's are made in this forum - what is the difference ? I find it quite absurd that foxtel would provide you with the means of beaking the law (with their own product). As far as I am aware it is actually beaking copywrite to record just about any tv show.
p.s. sounds great and I am not against this sort of thing , just find it strange.
(I think you'll find that because you can't keep the recording, you aren't breaking copyright. And after all - you could always copy Foxtel to a VCR if you wanted to. -PZ) ChrisPosted: 02/04/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? You certainly can record to a DVD player using foxtel iQ, you just need to use the scart out plug and plug it into the scart in on your DVD recorder. If the programme you are recording from is in digital quality - then so will be the signal that you send to your DVD recorder.
And for the nuff nuff who thinks that you put foxtel iQ ontop of your existing foxtel digital set top box.... you don't mate, it replaces your old foxtel digital box and gives you waaaaay more functionality.... coming from somebody who used to have both Foxtel & Optus in the old days... Foxtel has far superceeded what Optus have on offer now that they take the best out of the Optus channels and combine it with Foxtel.
(Yes, you'll get a good quality recording that way Chris, but for the purists, it's annoying that you go from digital to analog to digital to analog, thus degrading the picture a bit. It's inevitable. -PZ) RohanPosted: 01/04/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? It may "seem" to do the same thing, but it really doesn't. You can set IQ to simply record every Simpsons episode for you with a single button hit. The point is that it is integrated with the "What's On" guide in the digital unit.
Other systems you have to set your foxtel to change to channel 8 come 6pm and 7pm, and then set your VCR to record at those times. This greatly simplifies the process.
While that might not seem like much, I know I am far too lazy to ever set up my foxtel and VCR to record together. Having used this system in the US, I found that suddenly it was no effort.
This has the potential to revolutionize the way we watch TV. Suddenly now we can very easily watch what we want, when we want. No more waiting 'til 7:30pm ticks around and unplugging the phone so I can watch Law & Order.

1. You can setup the IQ to record one channel, then change channels and record on another and so on. It also can do 2 channels at once. If you bought your own device (PVR, DVD, VCR) then it would take foxtel as an input and it would record whatever channel foxtel is tuned to.
2. The signal coming out of your foxtel is analog, so it would need to be converted back to digital, losing quality. JamesPosted: 15/03/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Foxtel IQ is just another little thing that we dont need in life.

I've been hanging on this for ages, and was also a bit concerned about the not owning it, but heres an angle the salesperson told me: The main reason why FOXTEL retain the PDR is that it comes with a kind of "lifetime warranty" and is virtually future proof. Meaning that FOXTEL will continually supply updates when needed, and if it does have an issue, they'll just replace it. Makes sense to me. $395 for something that will get updated for the life of it, (whilst i stay a customer, and i dont really ever intend of taking FOXTEL off) and they are responsible for it, if it ever stuffs up! To me, that sounds much better that forking out $500 - $1500 for something that wont work too easy with my FOXTEL anyway, and will not last forever. What makes more sense? I'm happy to pay the $400-$500 to get this going, infact mines getting connected next week! Giddy up! RobinPosted: 03/03/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Best is I recorded the Arsenal game off ESPN while asleep and woke up and started at the end of the recording so I could see the action (knew the result of course). The install charge is for the 2nd cable run, I guess so you can record 2 programs. Hint, pause at begining of program for 20 mins. Then watch with 20 min time lag and you can adskip.

I hoped the Foxtel IQ would replace our VHS and piles of videos of our favourite series we are trying to catch up on.
I can understand Foxtel not wanting to give the free-to-airs the time of day as they are competitors. Personally, I would pay an extra $5 per month to get ALL digital broadcasts on Foxtel. This gives Foxtel an extra income stream, saves me having to purchase a separate set top box for digital free-to-air and would probably increase the number of subscriptions to Foxtel Digital.

(As I understand it, Foxtel has Macrovision copy protection on its movies. You may want to Google that. If you can record from the live program, you can record from the recorded program as it will be the same. But remember that by recording anything that way, it is going from digital to analog to digital to analog, thus degrading the quality. That's why so many of us are disappointed that we can't export the digital signal from the IQ. -Paul Zucker) linPosted: 24/02/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Its really disappointing they don't have an ad skipping function. I thought one of the really strong features of TiVos overseas were that they automatically stripped the ads out when they recording. PaulPosted: 24/02/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? Erica,
At least 60-70% of what I watch is on Foxtel. Any other PVR you buy can't really record Foxtel (or you have to program both the Foxtel box for the right channel and the PVR at the same time). With the FoxtelIQ I will be able to record two different Foxtel channels at the same time. Also don't underestimate the value of the electronic program guide integration.
Would I prefer that it was cheaper? Sure, but for me the benefits are worth it.
Even if you purchase a PVR or DVD recorder you are never going to get back the money you spent on it, so whether you own the box or not is really an issue.

(Apparently you can. But then, they let you watch the movie all day on the day you pay for it, anyway. -Paul Zucker) GR1MR33P3RPosted: 23/02/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? I have Foxtel Digital Platinum at my house. Two set top boxes. Interesting because I was looking for a PVR but preferably one that could record HD because I also have a HD Digital Box. It would be good if you could keep it for that price. EricaPosted: 23/02/2005 re: What's Foxtel IQ? I dont personally have this device nor am I a subscriber of foxtel anymore due to many reasons. But my question is why would anyone spend so much money on something they never own when you can purchase a PVR system elsewhere such as eBay which seems to do the same thing? But with the benefit of owning it. Then all you do is connect your foxtel box up to that. Isn't that more or less the same as connecting your foxtel box up to a VCR?
Am I missing something here or do people have that much money that they can just spend it so easily without thinking about things :)?
