Foxtel IQ and Blu-Ray.

Tuesday, 02 February, 2010

I'm wondering if I set the Blu-Ray player through the Foxtel IQ would it affect the picture quality at all?

Paul Lindsay, , Australia

The Foxtel IQ is a standard definition (SD) device (as is a DVD player). Blu-Ray is high definition (HD)

IQ does not handle digital video. (The best you'll get is component video which is almost as good.)

Let's say your TV is set to accept high definition signals through the component video input. Then yes, when the Blu-Ray is passed through the IS box you will get HD.

But if your TV has an HDMI input then that will give you the best video quality.

And if you have a surround sound system then you'd want to use the HDMI or the digital audio output from the Blu-Ray too.

But if you have two HDMI inputs on the TV, why not also upgrade the IQ box for an IQ2 box. That will give you a slightly better picture quality on SD signals.

re: Foxtel IQ and Blu-Ray.
Just another reason for Foxtel to drop their prices dramatically. While i miss National Geographic, Fox 8 and Nick at Night, i'm not paying that much for it, especially if it isn't broadcast in High Definiton and 7.1 surround. I didn't know the exact formats Paul because i haven't seen a Foxtel transmission for over 15 years and a lot can happen in that time. That's why the yanks laugh at us when we tell them how much we pay for one lousy carrier. I stand corrected but i will say one thing all of us tech heads should do. Monitor everything and publish it where the average punter can understand what they're paying for. It's like Greater Union saying that their 3D movies are digital. Really? I know that it's just great polarization that gives you a great 3D image and that digital has nothing to do with the image. The audio is of course digital once it's been converted to analogue because i haven't heard of a speaker that can actually handle a raw digital signal. I'm typing all this to show people how much work goes into watching a movie in the modern age and how they "spin" things to sound better than they really are. Digital 3D movies. Yeah, Right. Cheers Gang, Andy :)

re: Foxtel IQ and Blu-Ray.
The one thing that Foxtel don't seem to tell you or "conveniately" forget is that they transmit on Standard Definition (non digital) only. This might be ok if the service is free but it's not! I used to have Foxtel when i was living above my fathers business back in 1995 but i had a rear projection analogue monitor and was only concerned about the audio side of things because HD was still on the drawing board. Fast forward to 2010 and i would never sign up and pay for a service that's not broadcast in High Definition when free to air is. Back in the early days of Foxtel, the picture quality was questionable and i always listened to see if their "audio steering" was correct (the left and right channels were the wrong way around on many movies). I actually had two sets of RCA audio leads feeding into aux 1 and aux 2 so that i could correct the steering problem simply by listening to the soundtrack and selecting the appropriate input (aux 2 input was the reverse of aux 1). In this day and age, not much has changed. I often rang them about audio and video problems but the person i talked to was clueless, even when i described the problem in it's most basic form. Paul. Foxtel, like a DVD or Blu-ray player is an individual audio/vidio device. As far as running your Blu-ray player through Foxtel, why would you want to? Just connect them to your set individually, preferably using HDMI inputs. Why doom a High Definition picture from Blu-ray by running it through a Foxtel set top box. Cheers Andy :)

(But you forget one thing Andy. At least 90% of what Foxtel carries is only SD to begin with. Even the so-called HD Foxtel channels only carry SD most of the time. -PZ)
