How do I recover my missing NTLDR?
Friday, 20 June, 2008
I recently decided to have a look at my system settings so I turned on my computer and hit F1.
I must have changed something but I forget what it was.
Now when I boot it runs its memory test and then says
NTLDR missing - Press alt+ctrl+delete to restart.
I did that and the same thing happens.

NTLDR is an essential part of the system, which is why you can't boot. Try putting the XP installation disk in the CD reader, then restart. Allow restart from the CD and run Setup. This will refresh the installation but shouldn't lose any of your custom settings or applications.
If this doesn't work, there is only one thing left: format the hard disk and do a clean reinstallation. This will lose all your software and data (and sanity if you don't realise this first), so don't do it unless you have to.
Updated December 2007:
"NTLDR (abbreviation of NT Loader) is the boot loader for Windows NT, including some of its later versions (2000/XP/Server 2003). NTLDR does not appear in Windows Vista, which divides the functionality of NTLDR between two new components: winload.exe and the Windows Boot Manager."

ataPosted: 25/08/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? I don's why it become like this. When I open my laptop, the screen showed, NTLDR is missing.
press ctrl+alt+delete to restat,
I try this lots of time, but it still show the same thing on the screen. LachlanPosted: 25/06/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? I have solved this error by running the XP CD then when it come to the first screen of the windows load press R to repair windows in a Console View. Using Check disk command (CHKDSK) it Checks the file system and file system metadata of a volume for logical and physical errors. If used without parameters, chkdsk displays only the status of the volume and does not fix any errors. If used with the /f, /r, /x, or /b parameters, it fixes errors on the volume. Type chkdsk /f it will take about 10min to scan for errors in the windows files. raymondPosted: 24/06/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? I full format the laptop but the laptop no cd rom
(You should have thought of that first. Ask the manufacturer for advice. -PZ) The SolverPosted: 23/06/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? Best solution if you have 2 hard drives installed
If you have a second hard disk, format it with Linux and copy the NTDETECT and NTLDR files plus BOOT.INI onto the second drive. If you cant boot, Windows, then boot from your Linux drive and just copy the files back to the root directory. It works well but you need to have that second hard drive installed.
The second hard drive partitioned with Linux is also a good backup solution as well.
Xubuntu is a good Linux distribution and can be downloaded for free and installed easily. Larry JentzPosted: 22/06/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? Big Al is right and Jan is wrong.
Common problem, first boot drive has been changed so it cant find the boot loader. Simple, go back to the bios boot options and change the drive boot order and restart until you get the correct order set. JCPosted: 22/06/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? " a message comes up saying that the version I have on my PC is newer than the version on the disc."
Tony Brown, this part of your response...is suggestive that you have a very 'early version' of your OS.
There is a way around this.
Make a 'slip-streamed' version (using the newer SP2/3), then, use that.....to do any/all future Re-installations (of your OS).
Google "Slip-streaming", find that that will work properly, then, do it.
As for the others, with 'missing NTLDR", it's your choice.......either a 'Repair' or a 'Full Re-installation'.
It all boils down to a lack of attention/concentration...on your part, as to the reason why you got this error, in the first place.
Have fun, correcting your (big) mistake.
If you are saying "'someone else' cause it", think again, you let the other person use your computer.
That's still your mistake, isn't it? (worse than the other one.)
Am I being too cynical/too harsh, saying so?
Nope, just being truthfully honest. Abdullah Posted: 21/06/2008 give information about NTLDR competely hello for whom it may conern

I decided to restart it from the where i started getting the "NTLDR is missing, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart" error message. I restarted it but it kept on giving me the same message. I tried to repair the OS by using the Windows Xp bootable CD, but it was in vain. The only last option I had was to format the drive (i hate this but i had to do). the good thing is that I have the CD for all drivers my PC needs. And the problem was solved. RitzPosted: 02/06/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? How do i solve this problem when my NTLDR is missing and i also don't have any disc for windows XP Pro?
(You can't. Why don;t you have the disk? -PZ) LukePosted: 29/04/2008 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? Just for those who would like to know, NTLDR stands for New Technology Loader.
When your computer starts, the BIOS attempts to find the primary hard drive's active partition to read the first sector for the MBR (Master Boot Record), it uses that info to load the rest of the OS. For Windows NT4/2k/XP the MBR is pointed to the NTLDR and it takes it from there. If you get the "NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart" what's most likely going on is the BIOS either didn't look for the right drive, didn't find the right partition, it wasn't active, didn't find the MBR, or the MBR didn't list NTLDR in the right place, the location of NTLDR changed, or you are looking at a hardware failure situation (memory/cables/drive/motherboard/ etc)
(Thanks Luke. -PZ) Tony BrownPosted: 14/12/2007 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? Merry Xmas All :):)
Has anybody noticed that if you try to reload WinXp after having downloaded all the updates and hotfixes and whatever else they throw at us it just refuses to load
because a message comes up saying that the version I have on my PC is newer than the version on the disc.
As soon as SP3 comes out after Xmas, I'm doing a full format (don't do it they all scream ) and try and get things as close to normal as I once had them :)
Oh well thanks for putting up with my gripe for the year.
Merry Xmas again and A Safe and Happy New Year To All :):)Ho Ho Ho

This should replace the files in question but WARNING, if it works you may be required to re-install items such as printer/Graphics etc.
There are many ways to fix this problem but you need to be reasonably computer literate, and as the rest of the guys say, have a read on the web as there is much deticated to this.

(What? -PZ) WeiyePosted: 19/12/2005 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? I have tried this and it works. By enabling the see hidden files option, you can see NTLDR in the root directory of any computer running Windows XP. If your NTLDR is corrupted or missing just go to another computer and get the NTLDR from there and put it into yours. Ibrahim HuzamPosted: 08/07/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? I am having the same problem now. At first I did not know what actualy NTALDR is. I searched the net and found this site and now I know better. A couple of days back when all of a sudden my laptop got stuck and so i shut it down. And it did not boot. "operating system now found" was the message on the display. Than i kept on restarting and finally it was okay. But tonight I was not able to get internet, there was no problem with the connection. So i tried to restart , but it stopped saying "NTLDR missing" I really dunno what to do and i also dont have CP cd. Please help me out. KieranPosted: 06/07/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? I had the same problem on numerous occassions, insert win xp disk and reboot making sure your system is set to boot from the disk drive, you can set this up in the bios,
( hit del on initial startup to enter bios ) when your computer boots from the xp disk it will stop at a point asking which installation of windows do you want to repair giving you a choice usually 1. c:windows\
hit 1, it will ask for administrator password, just hit enter
c:windows\ will appear type fixmbr or fixboot
like this : c:windows\fixmbr a mesage saying saying your master boot record has been successfully replaced will appear. Remove your xp cd and restart your computer using the soft start button, you can let the computer boot straight up into windows or enter bios first and deselect the disk drive as the first boot device this should normally be the floppy drive or your main hard disk on which your OS (Win XP ) is installed Cam MarshallPosted: 29/06/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? Your BIOS settings should be OK, otherwise your BIOS wouldn't be looking at the MBR on that drive and looking for the NTLDR file, but it doesn't hurt to check. If you don't have a CD drive on the laptop then you won' tbe able to run the recovery console - if you can get one for the laptop you can repair it via recovery console via the FIXMBR and FIXBOOT commands - otherwise rip the drive out of it and use a 2.5" - 3.5" drive convertor to put in in another XP desktop and paste in the NTLDR file from the host system - no need to re-install at all!! jonasPosted: 20/06/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? yes i have indeed also this problem.
Only i do not have a cd--rom drive on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad 560x) and so i have to do it with an external floppy drive. Also I can not get into the BIOS because first a startup screen appears with "thinkpad" on it and directly after that I need to type in my password from the laptop.
once i typed in the password I press enter and directly after that I get the screen that says:
ntldr is missing
press+crtl+alt delete to restart and that goeds on like that in a loop.
I would really like to get this problem away. james symonPosted: 16/06/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? if you use a cd to bood into dos you cant copy that file due to teh ntfs partion not recconised by dos...there are some programs out there to get around this issue but ou will have more problems..if you have another computer the eaisest way is to copy that file from another hdd onto your own...i have done this b4.
if you reinstall XP you won't be able to have the same username..if you do it will change it to . which is annoying...and you will have to reinstall some programs LeighPosted: 15/06/2004 DON AB's answer is most likely Often it's as simple as a floppy being left in the drive or a non bootable CD while the boot order in Bios is set to boot from there removable devices first, DO NOT perform a re-load until you have removed ALL removable media and tried a reboot, ONLY AFTER you have done this should you consider the alternatives. If it aint broke, Don't Fix It!

The best solution for this is to search the internet you'll find plenty of information on how to fix these issues the best site that I would recommend that you start at is http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.mspx
I Had this happen and CONTRARY TO THE ANSWER given by Jan, a clean installation is NOT needed I've done this wihtout resorting to the last step. Most problems can be fixed without re installations.
If you need help to do this feel free to contact me and I can guide you through the process.
Rob Don A. B.Posted: 14/06/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? In some computer, when the "start option" is set to either "floppy drive" or "CD Rom" as "first boot" in the Bios Set up, that "missing NTLDR" could show up too. I suggest one should check that "first boot" is set as "Hard disk 0" in the Bios Setup, try that first, before trying to fix that problem with the Windows CD.
Actually, this has happened to my computer! John CallcottPosted: 14/06/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR?
Allow restart from the CD and run Setup. This will refresh the installation but shouldn't lose any of your custom settings or applications.
..
I don't think so this will not refresh the installation. You can only do a new install or a repair using this method. If you do a new install you will need to reinstall all you programs and drivers again. If you do a repair it will reinstall the missing file. To do this you must ignore the first time it asks you to do a repair and choose repair the second time it asks you to do a repair. If you can't follow this than get a professional else you will end up having trouble.
HelperPosted: 13/06/2004 re: How do I recover my missing NTLDR? Aahh, had this kinda prob myself. while "tweaking" i accidently deleted the file. i found that if u have a flash drive or floppy, and can borrow another computer with XP on it, you can copy the file and paste it back in to the c: drive using the recovery console on the windows installation disk.
