How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?

Sunday, 17 January, 2010

OLDER QUESTION

I got the Foxtel IQ pay TV box on OPTUS a week a go. Everything was fun until I found out that when you connect the IQ to a PC using USB it doesn't work.

Well to me that sux. What am I going to do with the recorded movies if the IQ is not mine even after paying $400 to get it?

I contacted PACE, the maker of the IQ box and asked them about the drivers or any help. They said you have to talk to your cable operator, so I did call Optus and they said they don't provide any drivers for it, and the USB is to be used for future applications. ROFL LOL LOL. It's USB 1.1 = SLOW and it meant to be used for future i know that's when USB 3 comes out LOL.

I see your frustration, but I'm not sure what you can do. Even if you found a way to change the firmware to do what you want (feed the digital recording out to another device) then what's to stop Foxtel or Optus simply reversing the procedure every time they download their updates?

The service provider wants you to use the system the way it's been set up. That's why there's no button to automatically skip ads on playback, even though they could have included one.

Unless some readers can help, I'd say you best bet is to start trawling the various groups that discuss such things.

Google is the other choice.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
The reason they don't want you to do it is because its a breach of copyright. Recording off air and watching it later from your IQ represents time shifting of the original broadcast. As a film industry member you all need to be aware that its just like jumping the fence at a concert or football game - think of your own industry and you can come up with an example - coffee shop its running off with the coffee before you have paid. So just accept that you are stealing if you burn a copy. Sure some films are owned by large studios - but often large studios provide some of the finance for independent films - unfortunately we need them!

Thanks - enjoy our film.

Cheers

(Sorry David but that first point is just plain wrong. -PZ)

Wth? To me it seems kinda simple. Find something thats capable of recording and has a HDMI input. Whack that up to the IQ2 and record... whats all this trash talk about S-video and crap... so un-necessary.

(All very well but that's the IQ2 you're thinking iof. The original question was about the IQ which doesn't have HDMI and anyway the qyestion was about transfer of the data files, not the video. There is a big difference in the time it would take. -PZ)

I just use a DVD recorder. Then rip the DVD to PC. Edit the video, create menus and burn to DVD

(No, it's not possible. Some people take the disk out and copy it that way but Foxtel wouldn't be happy if they knew. -PZ)

our set has been quiet good at transfering videos out to a dvd recorder. we use the yellow white and red plugs.

(Yes, you cann certainly do it that way but it's a shame you can't use the USB. It would be a lot quicker and wouldn;t degrade the picture the way your method does. -PZ)

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
Why bother? IQ box records everything anyway. From there you can connect your IQ box to a dvd recorder via scart cable. I have a pioneer dvd recorder that i just press the "one touch button" and ...voila. This unit can also schedule recordings so you don't have to stand next to it to press the one touch button. Once the show has been recorded on the dvd's hard drive you can fast transfer it on a dvd disk at a standard definition resolution - good enough for me. Do what you want with the disk from there - give it to family, play it on computer, etc. I hope that helps.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
Hypersonic, Raw Data does not require Foxtel to pay royalties to use the codec.. use of anything else like MP2 for a product that is never privatly owned by the user (eg Eternaly leased) means that to use MP2 would be for a profit and thus requires payment for Foxtel to shell out, and as any Australian knows the Tel part of Foxtel aka Telstra, hate to pay for anything, but love to make the client pay for everything, so if they had to pay for the use of MP2, then end user costs would go up more.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
you know you can get the movies out of your IQ box but it is not through the USB port you can get to them using the 9 pin port. all you need is the connection from 9 pin to usb. its slow but it works you also need the software to decode the data. if you look in the right place you can get that from the net. and its free.

(Is that true, or just wishful thinking? -PZ)

TBH pay less and you can get like 150GB download a month with ADSL2+ speeds (1.4 to 2MB/s download speeds)

Pretty sure that'd be enough for you to get all the programs u watch on foxtel :/

MichieuxPosted: 16/11/2007

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
Why bother? We got the IQ and premium cable from Foxtel precisely because we don't want to keep or own any of the content. Besides, much of the cable programming is reruns, so it's easy to watch anything you like multiple times.

The only bugbear with the IQ is the absence of an ad-skip button. We get around it by spending a little time inserting bookmarks at the end of each ad break, and then it's easy to skip the ads when we watch the program.

We're not totally against ads -- we do watch some -- but we're against their endless, mindless repetition, and their placement. It's worth spending a few minutes inserting the bookmarks.

One more thing:

To all customers of Foxtel directly, you don't own foxtel equipment and never will, if the inventory departments find out (you the previous customer) have opened the unit, they WILL charge you the $300 set top unit replacement/repair charge. The same $300 charge you see when disconnected. Do this so at your own risk. As customer service, I take enjoyment in telling you fork out the money :) It is a rewarding job hearing the stories that customers call up with ^_^

This is the advice of customer service, for your own benefit.

(But I didn't open it - honest. The dog ate it. You have to believe me. -PZ)

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
As a foxtel employee, the usb can work however you will need to design the driver yourself in order for it to read the data, the USB port is there for "Future use" with a special equipment piece expected to be realesed in the near future.

Again though the drivers are almost impossible to find so if you got some skills start designing it, otherwise you're out of luck.

Cheers, Customer Service :P

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
The Raw Data recording method makes sense, as in all honesty it is more secure for the provider to use as most users, (like 98%) have no means to use raw movie data, eg no access to Codecs to read the files.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
you obviously cant do it through usb but you can buy a scart plug adapter and a T.V TUNER card and connect through an S-VIDEO and aux cables to your sound card and record directly or saved recordings but you have to press your active button on the remote and go to SYSTEM SETTINGS and then click into PICTURE SETTINGS and change your VIDEO OUTPUT to S-VIDEO so you get colour picture and if you don't follow these steps you will only get a black and white picture .

I hope this is a big help to you all

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
Do yourself a favour, the USB just isn't an option, but if you go to Dick Smith Electronics you can can get a video signal transmitter/receiver set (about $80) and TV Card (Leadtek Analog/Digital) and then plug the S/Video cable from the receiver into your TV/Capture Card and the audio into your soundcard. Now use the transmitter plugged into the outputs from the Scart to the S/Video and Sound. With this done, you can have your PC running a scheduled recording and start that when you go to bed at night (don't forget to play your recored IQ session when your scheduled recording of your PC is due to start). I usually have this setup with the Receiver plugged into my monitor which has multiple inputs and allows Picture in picture mode (24" Dell)so I can watch Foxtel in the corner of the screen whilst doing my work. The transmitter/receiver setup allows me to view Foxtel wherever I like in the house so long as I have enough receivers, and I can still use the remote control because they come with a remote infrared extender.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
I mannaged to reccord from iq to my computer like this:
1. plug the foxtel output into a vcr input
2. plug the vcr output into a component to 3.5mm cable that connects into your dv cam (you need to enable it to play what is being inputted through the av cable)
3. plug the video camera into your computer (make sure there is a tape in the camera but don't press play on the camera but press play on the iq box) it should start playiny on your cameras screen
4.import the video using your video edditing software (I use imove as i'm on a mac).
now you can burn it to a dvd or just have it on your computer!!

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
I use a program called iuVCR (google it!) and a high quality SCART cable from the iq into my HTPC as it works pretty well. The only problems are that iuVCR can be difficult to set up (lots of excperimenting is needed!), the recordings are real time so if you don't want ads you either monitor the recording and pause iuVCR at the right place or you strip them out later. (I can't be bothered with either so I leave them in.) The last problem is that's is real time so it can be time consuming. I recorded the whole 2 or 3 series of The Sweeney from UKTV and I now have them safely backed up on DVD so I can watch them anytime - took me ages to get them all though!

(Yes Mike, but this is not different to any other analog to DVD recoding technique. It still doesn't solve the problem. People wnat a direct D2D solution. =PZ)

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
The guy that installed my foxtel told me that the USB port was not for the transfer of data - it's actually a video out connection (Some TVs have a USB input). It simply is transmitting the current video output so u can't use it to download data, USB 1.1 will take forever to rip off the data anyway!!

(WHy would they do that? Someone has told you a fib Tu Pham. -PZ)

Just setup the video recorder in front of the TV on a tripod and record directly. Also make sure you have some people with popcorn that can have their heads blocking the screen most of the time. Anything else is just strange....

It■s hard to understand what all the fuss is about. After investigating the features of the Foxtel IQ box and discovering all the marketing related restrictions, I totally lost interest in it. If you just want to time-shift get a HDD DVD recorder. There are plenty of other options for getting a high quality copy of any programme or movie you may wish to keep. At the top of this options list is the rather old fashioned approach of just buying it.
Bert the Secret SpyPosted: 13/02/2007

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
Foxtel is restricted from the companies in which they get the movies from. They infact encourage customers to record the content from normal Free2Air + Non Boxoffice/Main Event shows.

Thats why they attempt to slow this down by using macrovision. Sure there are ways around it, but the normal Joe Blow doesnt know how.

The licence agreement Foxtel has is that Boxoffice movies will be deleted from IQ 24 hrs after watching or at 6am AEDT for non-IQ customers. If the FBO is not watched with IQ, its deleted after a period of 72 hours with no charge to the customer.

Re the USB, it works, there are ways to extract the data. I just need to talk to the appropriate people and get more information as to how its done :)

Cant wait for the new satellite to launch which will allow for more bandwidth for satellite customers. This has been holding a lot more media from happening. Ie, more channels, more interactive, HDTV, etc.

They cant realise the extra bandwidth content to just cable customers, so they need to be able to do it both to satellite and cable together at once.

By mid 2007 more chans, and by end of year, HDTV on pretty much all chans! :)

Catch

Here's the software that should be able to extract the non-encrypted recordings directly from the hardware (you have to remove the harddisc and attach it to a PC):

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
Correct me if I am wrong but why cant you just go from the IQ box video out to the in of a DVD recorder and just record that way ... after all you have all the programs saved on the IQ box and you can (or should be able to)burn them at your lesure ...dont know for sure...hav'nt tries it ...!!!

(Of course you can do that, but there are two main problems. The first is that you'll be saving it at a lower quality than the digital original - and each analogue copy loses some quality. The second is that you have to do it in real time. Can you imagine how much nicer it would be if you could transfer the entire thing at file-copying speeds? -PZ)

"If this was the case the Sky+ box in the UK would also have the usb disabled"

The Sky+ box in the UK *does* have USB disabled.

You can extract recordings from the unencrypted channels only directly from the harddisc on the UK sky+, but that's the best we get. No good for movies because they're all encrypted.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
I am getting Foxtel IQ installed in the next few weeks. And as I am rather hesitant to open the box and upgrade even I will be happy with the record and playback.
The other thing you could do is build a mini pc for your tv and split the aerial signal into your TV. Effectively your TV in on your PC would be the same signal as your TV. Record from there.

Sucks, but it works.

ChrisPosted: 28/12/2006

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
You have to bare/bear in mind that content providers do put pressure, not just on foxtel, but on all cable tv providers due to the fact that it is a copyright issue. Foxtel can't let you download movie quality video's from the box because then the movie makers don't make any money off sales because everyone is just recording off foxtel for a pitance and then downloading it.

PS: The USB port is currently working, it is able to be used for the IR extender that allows you to watch foxtel in a different room to the set top box.

re: Tim - "and probably their content suppliers put pressure on them". Crap. If this was the case the Sky+ box in the UK would also have the usb disabled. And BTW it is the SAME box as the IQ. Yet another Tel$tra ripoff. Plus if they didn't want you to record they'd put every channel out in macrovision!

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
The software for the IQ USB ports is dead. Surely Optus could help? It is a ripoff - build a digital PVR with MCE2005 and 320GB drive for $900 and then get Foxtel hooked up. I believe PC User had an article about it a few months back which Darren Yates published.

(I disagree. Foxtel chose a box that happens to have a USB port on it. They didn't promise that it had one or that it would do anything. We might LIKE it to do something but that's tough luck. And while you can make a Media Center PC with great abilities, it still doesn't do quite what the IQ box can do. -PZ)

I have hooked up foxtel (notIQ) via the scart connector via RCA cables into a digital TV tuner card in my PC. It is only a cheap TEVION unit from Aldi store but it does record Foxtel programs (albeit not too good quality). I can then burn the stored program from the PC direct to a DVD disc for viewing elsewhere. Hope this helps.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
when foxtel iq records, it simply records the raw data stream As received from foxtel. when you play it back, it send the video to the decoder chip just as it would receive it if it were coming from the cable.

so.. even if you do get the files onto your computer, youll have to decrypt the files somehow.

(Granted, but wouldn't it make sense that they used a standard Codec such as MP2? I wonder what they do use? -Paul Zucker)

I have the normal Foxtel digital set-top box. It also includes a USB port but as of yet I havent found a way to connect it to say a comp to use it for something. The only possibly solution I came up with was to use the SCART on the box and put a SCART-A/V adapter on the other end.

re: How can I get the Foxtel IQ USB port working?
Unfortunately you basically have to choose between the advantages of IQ (including dual tuners iirc) or a normal Foxtel set top box hooked up to a PVR/Media Centre PC... Foxtel want to control what you record off their service (and probably their content suppliers put pressure on them in that regard). There is also controls on how long you can keep certain content - foxtel box office movies are automatically deleted after 48 hours, and some titles can't be recorded at all (according to their FAQ - http://www.foxteliq.com.au/what/faq.aspx)

I think for the money you fork out it's a bit of a rip - there's no practical way of moving recordings off the machine, limited playback functionality compared to other PVRs, content controls... and you don't even get to own the box! (see the last point on the FAQ)
